  1. That's the plan! I figure academia is about the only way to keep someone like me off the streets... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  2. I just got an e-mail that a paper proposal that I submitted has been accepted for a conference in July. This will be my first paper given at a conference! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  3. Details on your get-rich-quick scheme? Perhaps you could start one of those seminars and make a fortune that way! Plenty of jump tickets waiting for you... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  4. Add me to the list... If I were smart, I'd be using this time productively, but as Edward Norton's character said in Fight Club, when you have insomnia, you're not really asleep and you're not really awake. Well, it's nice to know that I'm not alone! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  5. High: Seeing the impact that Holly has had on the lives of the people here, even on those who never met her in person. It seems clear to me that she was without question an amazing human being. Low: It's just NOT FAIR that people like her can be taken from us. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  6. Please inform this pitiful naive jumper still on student status: Why is your rig unpacked at work? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  7. I have not met any dz.commers in person, yet. I'm not even sure if I'd had a conversation with Holly in these forums. It's strange, though, I still feel like I've lost someone close to me. Never having had a conversation with her, she is nonetheless the closest person to me that this sport has taken. Maybe some of you who are older and more seasoned and have therefore lost more people think that's silly. Maybe it is. Whenever I'm on these forums, all I really know of anyone is what they've written, so I end up making up stories about them based on their avatars, guessing who they might be in real life (whatever that is). For example, since I've been posting here I don't think I've agreed with Deuce a single time on any issue, but somehow that picture of Calvin he has as his avatar changes it somehow. Maybe it's because I like Calvin and Hobbes, too, and therein lies a common ground. I don't know. Or CanuckInUsa. Steve and I started AFF at just about the same time last year, now he has a hundred or so jumps and I'm still stuck on #11. But seeing that photo of him as his avatar just chilling out--it's so small I can't even tell what he is doing there--with the big grin on his face. I feel like I know him a little better for it. And JTval, well, his avatar keeps changing; so do my stories. I guess what I'm saying is that people's avatars make them seem just a bit more human to me. I always liked Holly's avatar. She's giving everyone the finger with a huge smile on her face--she's smiling, laughing so much that her eyes make two tiny crescents. She seemed like such a fun person with a great attitude in life... I hope I get to meet all of you guys at some point, so I can know who you are for real. Not just the little story I make up about you in my head. Blue skies, black death. Edit: Just searching through her posts...It seems so strange to read her posts from two days ago...How could anyone have guessed? I found this... I wish I'd have taken her up on her invite, now. 10. Unless, of course, one lives in Michigan. But I think that goes without saying. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  11. Bizarre! ... I find that joke more heartwarming than funny...
  12. So my DVD of Good Stuff arrived last night! Don't know if he reads, here, but I'm so impressed with how fast Joe Jennings got the DVD here. I ordered it on Thursday or Friday and by Tuesday I was watching it. Money definately well spent (and relatively cheap, too!) I can't get over those car dumps. Is there a law about dumping stuff out of planes like that? Do they need permits? How did they keep people out of the landing (crashing?) area? I can only imagine what could happen if the wind changed... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  13. Hmmpphh. Well, when you're rubbing the warm weather in all our faces, just think about how many jump tickets you're sending to the electric company to pay for the A/C A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  17. This is very true. I'm really happy living in Ann Arbor, except, well, the winter is too damn long! This past weekend was the first good skydiving weekend this season, and that seems too frickin' late for me! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  18. Yeah, but who has the discipline to put away the amount of money they might get in a refund? It's still your own money, but consider it a rainy-day fund that does not earn interest. My money or not, it's nice to get a lump sum that I can feel free to do with what I please. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  19. What a bummer...I made it to safety day and even got to hang in the harness for a little bit, but the winds were gusting too strong for me to jump today. Looks like the rust will be hangin' on for a bit longer. Still, it was nice to get back to the dz and watch others jump. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  20. So in Michigan, the skydiving season begins much later than for the rest of the country (not one word from you southerners/californians/etc. about how it's always skydiving season ). This Saturday is safety day, and I'm all nerves. I haven't jumped since October 11 and right now it really scares me to think about starting up again. Anybody else have a layer of winter rust? Any suggestions for how to deal with it? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  21. I've responded to a few of my jumps like this, actually. It sounds to me like they were still pretty overcome by what happened, rather than as though they were repressing it. The jumps that don't go quite as planned, I'm usually walking away very deep in thought, planning, thinking about next time, making mental notes. I walk away from the ones that go well with pure exuberance. But for a first-jump student, the whole thing can be very overwhelming...it can take some time to process it. Did you ever see these people make second jumps? Did they respond the same way? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  22. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I found out that that song was about Dave Coulier. I mean, come on Alanis, it's Dave Coulier! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  24. This part concerns me a bit. It sounds like some passive-aggressive hostility. Why does she care if you stay in the house? What does the fact that you "got the place the way we want together" have anything to do with anything? If you are no longer together, then there is no reason why she should insist that you either stay together or leave together. This sounds pretty ominous to me...Is she insisting that you two still live together even though you've broken up? Who broke up with whom? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  25. It's not really the term papers I mind...I usually like writing. i guess it's just the one i'm supposed to be working on right now that's getting me down. LOL I keep switching back and forth between DZ.com and the term paper, hoping that my computer will get confused and instead of adding new posts to the forum, it will add more prose to my paper! Not likely, huh? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
