creation or evolution, which do you believe
FliegendeWolf replied to skygod7777's topic in The Bonfire
And the Catholic church teaches evolution, too. From the preface to The New American Bible: "Sometimes we must take a cue from science in determining how to interpret the bible. Most scientists now hold that humanity somehow evolved from more primitive life. This tells us that Genesis 1 is not intended to be a science lesson, but a poem on creation." Still workin' on it! I'll let you know in a few weeks when it's ready to drink (although the small amount I tasted getting the siphon going last night tasted pretty good!). If you do get started, I would recommend not bothering with a kit. Find a good book on beginning homebrewing and buy what you need in pieces. The kit I got (it was a gift from my girlfriend's Mom) had a can of malt extract, a length of siphon tubing, a bubbler, a packet of yeast, and a booklet. The malt, yeast, and bubbler were exactly like the ones that I've seen at the brew store, the siphon tubing was not useful since I had to buy a racking cane and bottle filler, which included siphon tubing, also. Worst of all, it was only one pound of malt extract ... enough to make only one gallon of beer. Most brewers make beer in five gallon batches. I had to therefore buy a gallon jug fermenter which I won't use again!! Lastly, the booklet was not thorough, meaning that I went out and purchased a book anyway! Good luck if you begin! I know I can't wait! I think that's about the only downside to homebrewing. I don't want to wait 4 weeks for beer! I'm just not used to planning ahead like that!! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Well, most of the alcohol is produced during primary fermentation before bottling, meaning if I'm REALLY impatient, I could just settle for (and catch a nice buzz from) flat beer!! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

So as of last night, my beer batch of, well, beer is sitting in bottles in a dark cool place waiting for the yeast to eat the honey and produce carbonation. Two or three weeks ought to do it. It's a good thing I'm leaving for vacation ... that'll keep me from peeking! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

That reminds me...a few years ago, they were talking about banning fountain runs through the engineering fountain. I recall there was a big chainlink fence around it for a while, and at one point they were considering installing what looked like a giant muffler to keep people from running through the stream. Did anything come of that? Can people run through it again? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Heh, your sophomore year, too? Hmmm... I was at Purdue when I was a sophomore. I wonder if that means anything... Freshman year was a blast, though. I was a bonafide Cary Quadrat. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Well, the "y" is acting like a vowel here, as in "sometimes y." How about abracadabra? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Jimbo: I was responding in that post to this: The quote argues that God thinks homosexual is not OK specifically because it contains no "reproduction clause." A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Fair enough. I think more people should take that attitude. Some, unfortunately, do not and feel that they are justified to murder people because their religion condemns whatever it is that they do. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

That's funny, because your Christian colleague, Sinkster, has told us in this very thread that Christians are free to ignore the old testament, where the incident to which you refer is found. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

So, by your logic, if my napkin says: "I am God and I wrote this message: I prophesize that if go fart on your friend's head he'll be pissed at you (Jesus, who we all agree walked the earth 2000 years ago, told me to tell you to make it stinky one)" It makes a good case for itself actually being the word of God. Paradox - a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and is yet perhaps true. The presence of a paradox does not mean that the argument is invalid. Consider the paradox of light. On the one hand, it seems to act like a particle. On the other, it seems to act like a wave. Do we scrap the theory simply because it is paradoxical? Of course not. My biggest objection about fundamentalism is that it's faith seems misplaced. When you ask a fundamentalist why they are so sure that God exists, they resond, "because the bible says so." This suggests to me that they do not have faith in God; they have faith in the infallibility of the bible, which they use to prove the existence of God. With this logic, I could say that any book (or movie, or song, or insurance pamphlet) is the revealed word of God and use that to argue for the truth of whatever it might say. Perhaps "God can overcome whatever imperfections we have to get his message out like He wants it" on the back of a napkin? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Well, consider the passage you just cited: Emphasis mine We do not live in a society that condemns fornication. One, of course, has a choice as to whether they personal believe fornication is evil, but early twenty-first century western culture does not persecute fornicators in the same way that it does homosexuality, very often in the context of bible-thumping. I stand by my point. If one is going to argue that the bible is the standard for all societal ideals, then that has to carry through with every single one of them. Good point, Gawain. Let's also throw into the mix human translators (the bible was translated at least twice before King James, and several times after) on top of human authors. That's going to affect the equation as well. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

As an avid dart player, it has never ceased to amaze me that bars will give people alcoholic beverages, and then sharp metal objects that they're supposed to throw! Not that I don't enjoy a nice dark beer while I'm throwing, but still... It seems obvious to me that this is asking for trouble! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

This argument assumes that the only purpose of sex is reproduction. The fact that most people are willing to have sex (straight or otherwise) without wanting a child to come of it means that sex has purposes other than reproduction. Also, consider the fact that women do not undergo heat cycles. They are perfectly capable and willing to have sex even if they are not fertile on that particular day. It is definately a fallacy to equate sex and reproduction. Also, if your argument that engaging in a lifestyle that is not compatible with reproduction is sinful, then there are a lot of priests out there (except, of course, the ones that were molesting nuns) that are going to the big lobster pot in the ground. Lastly, and the point was already made by others, there are a lot of laws in the bible that we do not follow, so quoting one law in the bible that forbids homosexuality is utterly irrelevant unless one wants to argue that we should follow ALL laws in the bible.
