  7. Actually, that argument is flawed. When you say that your wife has faith in you, you do not mean that your wife believes in your existence. It is not that she has faith in your existence, but that she has faith in the quality of your character (or some other intangible personality trait). A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  9. Indeed, the object is being accelerated toward the center of the circle, but this is the only acceleration acting upon the object to produce the velocity changes. The key words you use are "apparent force." There is only one "actual" force acting upon the object, and that is the force that keeps the object moving in a circle. The amusement park visitors riding the Rotor or the Gravitron may feel like there is a force pushing them against the walls, but it is not a force, but rather the effects of the inertia of the constantly changing velocity acted upon by the centripetal force. Consider the possibility that there is both a centrifugal (CF) and a centripetal (CP) force acting upon an object (X) moving at a constant speed (S) (not velocity): S | | V These two forces will cancel each other out, causing X to continue at speed S along the vector in the diagram. Thus, the presence of both a centrifugal and centripetal force will produce a constant velocity. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  10. I'm very well aware of the potential for this sport to infect people's lives (As evidenced by the overwhelming majority of people who voted for kiss my ass in the above poll, among other things). I'm also very well aware of my own addictive personality. I used to like smoking pot a lot. I used to like shrooming a lot. And when I begin to talk and think incessantly about skydiving, I find my behavior and thought processes frighteningly familiar. So I was inspired by this thread to sit and have a long conversation with my girlfriend about my skydiving last night. I told her that jumping is very important to me, but that she is also, and if the slightest hint of resentment begins to brew about my jumping, I want her to tell me. I know she would never make me choose between skydiving and her. But that doesn't mean that my skydiving could never get to a point where she would need to make her own decision about things; I never want it to get to that point. 14. Well...except that "centrifugul force" is not a force at all, as an object moving in a circle is not being accelerated away from the circle's center. Since there is no acceleration, there can be no force. The correct term for the phenomenon that keeps water in a spinning bucket is "tangential velocity," which is entirely accurate and no more difficult to abstract than is the concept of centrifugul force. The simple evidence is that when you let go of the bucket of water, it does not move straight out from the center of the circle but continues to move tangentially. 17. Is there an assumed direct proportion between "post-loading" and quality of post? I have 17 jumps and 675 posts giving me a post-loading of .0025. Is there a problem with my posts because of that? A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  20. Yep, it's one of my favorites. I wasn't actually playing guess the movie, that's my sig! The reason that I like the movie so much is because my girlfriend's father looks just like De Niro in that movie - haircut, facial expressions, mannerisms...everything. It's freaky, really. Well, when I first met Howard (who's really an awesome guy), he had just driven straight through from Boston to Michigan and in Ohio managed to get both a speeding ticket and a flat tire. By the time I saw him, he wasn't in the best of spirits. I thought to myself, "Oh my God, it's Meet the Parents." My girlfriend didn't thinks so at first, but the more we watch that movie, the more she sees the similarity. This became a running thing. I don't know whether Howard has seen the movie yet, but we did get him to quote that Nipple line in the middle of a restaurant once. So back in January, Ali and I went through a bit of a rough spot which led to our breaking up for a couple of weeks. Since then, we've sort of patched things and have been working on ways of avoiding similar situations. After I saw Howard for the first time since the incident, Ali tells me that they were talking about me, and that Howard said (without even realizing it)that he likes me a lot, but that I'm not back in his circle of trust. Ali and her Mom lost it and laughed hysterically about that! I think it's pretty funny! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  22. I was flabbergasted when my physics teacher explained this to us. Eventually, I understood the principle, but what I've never understood is why so few people know this. I could swear that I "learned" about centrifugal force in school, and I know for a fact that I "learned" about it in different science museums. Why does the concept of centrifugal force continue to get propogated when it is completely untrue? How can there be nobody in the know at a science museum for cripes sake?
