  1. Washington Post via the Associated Press President Bush said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that," the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden. Bush also urged, however, that America remain a "welcoming country" -- not polarized on the issue of homosexuality. "I am mindful that we're all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. "I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts." "On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added. Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages. The Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that made homosexual sex a crime, overturning an earlier ruling that said states could punish homosexuals for having sex. Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia fired off a blistering dissent of the ruling. The "opinion dismantles the structure of constitutional law that has permitted a distinction to be made between heterosexual and homosexual unions, insofar as formal recognition in marriage is concerned," Scalia wrote. The ruling specifically said that the court was not addressing that issue, but Scalia warned, "Do not believe it." Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution. To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  4. We're on it. I checked out movingscam.com the last time it came up and have found that page. We have already begun compiling our complaint about the events of the past few days. Here's where we're at: We have agreed to put have of the new charges on credit card now, and to pay the rest when they arrive. Then, we'll file a dispute with the credit card company over the charges based on our story and hope to at least recoup some that way. I'm pretty sure that the Mastercard corporation is better equipped to deal with these situations than I am, at any rate. JT, thanks for the offer, but I wouldn't feel right about taking your money for this... A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  5. Hi everyone, thanks a lot for the vibes. I've decided that movers=asshats. The way it's working out, we were given a quote for $1190 from one company. This company outsourced the actual move to another company. When the second company arrived (two hours late ... and we needed to get on the road), they came armed with details that were not what we agreed to with the first company, but they basically said, "Do you or do you not want your things moved?" What could we do? We signed their form and got on the road. Yesterday, Ali received a phone call from the second company saying that they have our things in a warehouse in Chicago and it will not be released until we agree to pay them a total of $3900. So we threw a fit with the first company, who acted all apologetic and promised to have things squared away in a half hour. This was yesterday morning, and as many times as we have called them and spoken and haggled with them, have not called us to tell us any progress is being made. I guess what happened is the movers decided that the boxes we had packed were not packed "properly" and emptied them and repacked them in their own boxes (which start at $10 per box), and after this the things now took up twice as much space as was quoted. Anyway, it's still in Chicago and we don't know when it will be delivered and how much of the extra money we'll actually have to pay. Oh yeah, and nobody has bothered to pick up our car, yet. It's still sitting in the parking lot of my old apartment complex. GRRRRRRR A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  6. I agree with you, Zenister. I only hope that when we are judging the value of human lives, we bear in mind just how subjective we are being. We are placing a judgment on the worth of another life. Their relative worth or worthlessness is not inherent. So I am highly mistrustful of rhetoric of good vs. evil, and especially rhetoric that claims our right to murder others because we are "good" and they are "evil" as though these terms were concretely defined. They are not. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
  7. And I think you missed my point. The previous post was a sarcastic jab at right-wing double-standards. I ask you this: Are all human lives equally valuable? If they are, then it is hypocritical to claim that the right to live only extends to some. If they are not, then I wonder what human being has the authority to judge between the valuable lives and the worthless lives. Do you? In short, what sense does it make to send the message that killing a human being is morally wrong by killing a human being? I expect you to respond as you did in an earlier post: you'll disclaim the debate by arguing "It was just a joke." Let me therefore assure you that I do understand that it was posted as a joke. This doesn't mean that there isn't anything worth debating in it. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

  25. OK, there are two hours and thirty minutes left until I officially join the Unemployed Skydivers of America. Because I won't be working this job anymore, I probably won't be on dz.com much anymore. I'm sure I'll pop in from time to time to say hello. Thank you all for keeping me sane this (and last) summer. I look forward to meeting you all at a boogie sometime soon!
