  1. Thanks! And welcome back.
  2. You need to post a picture of yourself with a white piece of paper that says "Me" so that we know it's really you.
  3. Not sure if this has already been posted, but...
  4. We just watched "To Catch a Thief" last night, and we were giggling at the costume party towards the end, because all of the men looked like Mel Brooks as "the king" in History of the World. When the police gathered after the party, they looked like a little band of Mel Brookses. I think I saw High Anxiety when I was a kid, but it looks like it would be funny to watch again.
  5. Thanks. I kept reading the title of that other thread as "Physics" before I finally clicked on it to see what they were talking about. Oh, psychics.
  6. I'll have to check out "Lifeboat." I've seen the other two you mentioned, and liked them both. And yeah, I've been wondering how much stuff I've missed in the past that makes reference to his films. (Well, except for Psycho stuff. Somehow I recognized references to that film before I ever saw it.)
  7. "God is a metaphor for that which transcends all levels of intellectual thought. It's as simple as that." -- Joseph Campbell
  8. I've only started watching his movies in the last few years, and I've only seen maybe ten of them, but I am becoming a fan. They're always very fun to watch, so it's hard to pick a favorite. But, so far, I'm thinking "Rear Window," since I was actually in suspense through most of the film, especially for a story that basically took place in one room. I'll definitely be watching some more....
  9. My favorite today: White House Keeps Distance from Weiner But it doesn't take much for my inner fifth-grader to come out.
  10. Like, totally. I have a serious aversion to gum-chewing. If you ever want to annoy the crap out of me, then chew gum in my presence. But I don't advise you to actually do that, because I can blackmail you.
  11. And, considering that alcohol is a drug, I suppose you could add quite a few highly-accomplished people to the list of "dopers." Simply using drugs doesn't mean someone is a bad or weak person. It's when we keep using despite causing harm to ourselves and/or others (particularly others) that drug use becomes a problem.
  12. Who chews gum while being interviewed on the national news??? OMG, now I am disturbed.
  13. I generally support the legalization of all drugs, but I don't know about canning ALL of the laws regarding drug use. (Maybe that's not exactly what you meant??) I would hope we would keep regulations on age and where the drugs could be sold, driving under the influence, etc. Not sure that society would be "no worse off because of it." We'd likely be trading certain problems for others.
  14. He sort of lost me right away with the whole "not celebrating anyone's death" thing, seeing as we just recently witnessed a whole lot of people (from either side) celebrating a particular man's death. But I did keep scrolling, just to look at the pictures. I liked that he had Hard Gay in there (I had forgotten about him :), and I thought this one was pretty funny:
  15. Convenience stores and liquor stores get robbed all the time. If you get them to include narcotics in their inventory, they'll likely get robbed even more. But yeah, maybe the pharmacy robberies would decline if the good drugs went somewhere else.
  16. They sell some pretty popular recreational drugs, particularly OxyContin. I'm guessing they get a lot of drug addicts and/or dealers robbing them.
  17. I think the basic idea of "karma" is that our actions produce effects that are generally in line with whether our actions are positive or negative. There are many people who believe in "karma" without believing in any sort of divine intervention. (Though, like the word "god," it is interpreted in many different ways by different people.) I believe in karma at the very basic level (as explained to me from a non-theistic Buddhist perspective), and I see no reason why this is inconsistent with not believing in a god.
  18. You believed in God, so you were not an atheist. Maybe you called yourself an atheist, but you were not one. And I'm not only talking about our laws as consequences. If I treat people like crap, I end up with crappy people in my life. If I abuse alcohol or other drugs, I end up with poor health and other problems. Etc., etc., etc. It doesn't matter whether we want to be accountable for our actions; we will be accountable for them one way or another, regardless of whatever religious beliefs we have. I never made a choice to be an atheist; I am simply incapable of believing in any of the gods I have heard of.
  19. Well, it might be nice to just do whatever we want to do, if it didn't cause any problems. But, even for us godless heathens, there are earthly consequences for our actions, so the "doing whatever I damn well please" generally doesn't work for very long. And you say "admit" as if you think we believe in a god but just won't admit it, which is pretty silly.
  20. I can assure you that I do not hate Jesus Christ. Why would I? What a ridiculous thing to say.

Given that this is Bonfire, I'm surprised no-one has followed up on this. You probably have to mention something about genitalia if you want us Bonfirians to look up the etymology of anything.
  22. Oh, they could do whatever they wanted, silently of course, in a way as not to draw attention to themselves. Read a book, check messages on cell phones, or just stare at whatever. Read a book? Not draw attention to themselves? Mind their own business? Seriously? I guess I find your perception of atheists to be rather odd and negative. I could be wrong, but I think most of us are capable of enjoying a moment of quiet reflection or meditation. (Of course, if your perception is mostly from Speakers Corner, I guess I can understand.)
  23. Sorry to nitpick here, Billy, but I'm curious as to why the need to tack on that last sentence. Why are the atheists not included in the "everyone" who can silently do whatever they want with the moment of silence? I know there are some obnoxious atheists who would even be ticked off about a moment of silence, but I don't think they represent the majority. (And BTW, a lot of Buddhists are atheists too.)
