Sorry, I didn't continue reading that thread and didn't know that it had turned into an alcohol debate. I only read your OP, sort of didn't agree with you, but didn't care to comment. Then I saw this thread that you started, and I did care to comment.

I watched the first three episodes last night. It was good, and funny in parts, but it was disturbing to me on some really deep level. I guess it's meant to be that way though. But I can't really put my finger on what was so disturbing. I think that the main guy is just such a good actor that I could really feel his angst, and it made me uncomfortable, yet I watched it anyway. And I'll probably continue watching the series. Though I think in the future, I'll follow it up with something more light-hearted, so that I don't spend all night having dreams about people smoking meth and stuff like that.

You start a thread about how great a cocaine bust is, and then you start another thread making a joke about heavy drinking??? I guess you don't realize that alcohol is a "hard drug" too and that alcohol abuse causes more problems in society than cocaine does? But that's all I have to say about that.

It's kinda hard to talk with a . . . Oh, nevermind.

I liked how the guy compared craving S&M to craving turkey. Does anyone really have that big of a thing for turkey??? Maybe I haven't been eating it right.

I haven't seen it, but I've been wanting to, so thanks for reminding me. Looks like there are several episodes on tonight.

Yeah, so Guns N Roses wrote a song for me...

That's a funny movie!

Oops. I forgot that we're not supposed to be posting or encouraging this type of stuff. Or is this ok since it is sort of educational? And helpful to anyone who may be traveling to Iceland and looking for something fun to do?

Sounds like an interesting place. And their website has some cute pictures.

David Allen Coe... Freakin' Texans... Aw, reminds me of Dimebag. Hmm, theme song, huh? This song might work for a few of the women on here, but I won't mention any names.

Yep, next thing you know, I'll no longer be able to go shoot up heroin down at the local playground. Oh wait, that freedom has already been revoked. Freakin' Nazis...

Is that "in addition to", as in "in combination with"...or is that an admission of other, singular causes...independant of smoking? Other causes. There are people who have never smoked who get lung cancer, so I'm pretty sure no one would claim that smoking is the only cause. Working around coal dust or exposure to asbestos are other things that have been linked to lung cancer. Well, that's an interesting take on it, though I can't say I agree with you. But I understand being skeptical when there are new studies every day, and one day something is good for you but the next day it's not, and oftentimes powerful industries or corporations stand to gain a lot from the research pointing one direction or the other. However, with this particular topic, there seems (to me) to be a pretty clear correlation between smoking cigarettes and increased risk of lung cancer. Though I smoked despite the fact that I believed in the risk. I quit because I just got sick of it.

Well, there ya' go...there's a gov't grant out there, just waitin' for ya'!! YOU could be the one to make the connection....just like they've been doing with asprin and wine, for so many years. Wow, so aspirin has now been linked to intoxication and alcoholism?
-
Most studies I've seen include genetic disposition and other environmental factors (in addition to smoking) as possible causes/risk factors for getting lung cancer. Just curious, but if you think this is all propaganda, then who do you think stands to gain what from disseminating this "false" information?
-
But expensive wine tastes better!

I've known a handful of people who have died from lung cancer, and every one of them was a heavy cigarette smoker. But that small of a number is not enough to prove anything. The studies linking smoking to lung cancer are looking at (at least) thousands of people, and there is a pretty strong consensus about the results. No one is saying that if you smoke you WILL get lung cancer. They are only saying that smoking increases the risk of getting lung cancer (and many other diseases). But it is apparently not the only factor involved in whether you will end up getting cancer or not.

I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD, since it wasn't shown at any theaters around here. But now that it's out, I haven't had a chance to watch a movie. So I'll probably watch it sometime this week, at which point I may actually have something to contribute to the conversation.

I haven't seen Project Runway, but when I was sick last weekend, I spent a whole day on the sofa watching re-runs of America's Next Top Model. And when they get to the final two, they do a catwalk thing that was reminding me of the "walk-off" in Zoolander. So yeah, you're probably right that Zoolander isn't too far off from the actual industry. Oh, and the scene at the end where Owen Wilson is taking the kids BASE-jumping is cute. (Even though he was wearing a Reflex, or something like that???)

And that's why I love you, Keith.

Oh no... It's got to be Raquel Welch's skydiving scene in Fathom. Edited to add a link to her parachute packing scene, just because . . .

You better bring your famous barbecue sauce too. That stuff is good.

She should tell them about Planned Parenthood, if there is one in the area. They provide free pregnancy tests for people who can't afford to pay, and the wait would probably be a lot shorter than in the ER.

It's not the weed causing gum disease. It's all the Twinkies and Taco Bell consumed during the munchies. And the fact that potheads are all too stoned to go to the dentist.

My ex (who used to live with me) was a professional musician. He was always playing guitar/singing/working on new songs, but it never bothered me. In fact, I usually enjoyed it.
