Thanks to all for the complements folks. This video was a lot of fun to make and even more fun living through many of the jumps made by myself and by other friends seen on the video. It should be illegal to have this much fun. Oops ... in some cases it is illegal. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Okay I was wrong for saying this without better knowledge of the actual nitty-gritty detailed designs of the two canopies and I am guilty of having this "impression" of having similar designs based on conversations I've had with other FLiK and Black Jack pilots. After all BASE is nothing more than a recreational sport to me. I do not eat, breath and dream of BASE jumping 24/7 as some other people do. It's a lot of fun to huck myself off of certain fixed objects, but it is not my life. Anyway, am I wrong for saying that both of these canopies are excellent products and that someone wouldn't go wrong with either one of these canopies? If I am, then maybe I should stop listening to many many people in the BASE world, because that is the impression I've been given about these two canopies. They are both very good canopies. As long as you keep jumping, sooner or later you too will need to land off. It happens to almost everyone. Being the last out at the WFFC or the Eloy Holiday boogie helps increase your odds of landing off (I love to quote Bryan Burke right about now "If you don't like the spot, it's not getting any better"). Plus make a balloon jump, you're almost guaranteed to land off on one of those. I also believe that you jump a fair amount at Sebastian right? Dang now there's a DZ that you really need to be careful at in terms of landing off. Outside of landing on a road (and avoiding power lines) there really doesn't seem to be too many easy places to land off at that DZ (tons of trees surrounding the DZ). Either way, know where you're going to land by the time you hit 1000 feet AGL on each and every jump you make. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I'm under the impression that these two canopies have a lot more in common than they are different. In other words, they are both good products and you won't go wrong with either one. Go with the one which gives you the better price and/or the one which has the size you want. But they are (at least this is the impression I have) almost identical in design and performance. I only asked about the swoop pond (or lack there of) because I noticed you guys had the potential to score points in zone accuracy by dragging your feet through some lines before zone zero. We also did our CPC comp over dry land, but didn't allow for points to be awarded by dragging the feet and we ended up with several ties in zone accuracy. Bummer about the wind. Hopefully it didn't differ too much from competitor to competitor, load to load. Did you guys do your zone accuracy event over water or land? Our 2nd CPC event comes up this weekend. Should be fun. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I can only speak for one of those 3-ways from the bridge in the video. The 3-way with Peter doing the double gainer, Jamie in the back doing a single gainer and myself videoing the jump was a total staggered opening assignment jump which went as planned. I was hand held taking a 1 second delay. Both Peter and Jamie complete their gainers about the same time, but Peter is packed slider up and Jamie is slider down (Jamie's canopy will open faster). This sort of staggered opening altitudes is how this sort of jump can be pulled off. Tim the one 3-way with the over rotation was from last years Memorial Day boogie when this fellow (I met him but forgot his name) was doing his 300th? You probably know him. And that wingsuit jump to date is the most incredible jump of my life, even better than my Moab jumps which are treasured. On the video it looks like I'm going into the homes, but I pulled at 2500, was open by 2100 feet and easily landed off safely in a field about 1/2 mile south of our main landing area. My memories of the actual jump and the video are to different beasts. Jimmyh ... I'm a big fan of your work and to hear that you like mine means a lot to me. Of course I had the help of some of my friends doing their antics. But we had a lot of fun doing the jumps you see. I hope to party with you one day. Shit dude that's not me. That's Kevin. I'm the dude getting on my knees for a better view of the jump. But damn skippy for the call on having fun. My friends and myself have been having a lot of fun in the last year. There's another song near completion as well. It's just needing some finishing footage. But after that I'm done. I'm out of my good stuff. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I've uploaded a new video on skydivingmovies.com to watch. It's mainly a BASE jumping video, but there is a wingsuit balloon scene as well as some swooping and tracking footage. If you do download it, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it. Steve ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

On my 69th jump I had to exit the aircraft prematurely when it ran out of fuel. Fortunately I bailed out at 5700 feet AGL and the pilot did a good job getting us near the airport. So it wasn't a big deal. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Wingloading/Density Altitude Equation
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I started this thread, I was first being lazy wanting a quick answer (and some of you gave me a headache with your responses). But it's is an interesting topic. Not that I have all these CO Ground launching exit points, but what obviously works at one DA will not work at another. It's all making sense now why the performance for myself got worse as the afternoon worn on. It wasn't me, my canopy was too small for the DA I was at. And we really weren't all that high when it comes to potential launch sites here in Colorado. Hmmm ... shit ... anyone want to trade a Samurai 136 for something similar but bigger? Wingloading/Density Altitude Equation
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm wondering if guys like BillVon or Kallend (or anyone else) has come up with an equation that factors in wingload and density altitude. You see the other day I was doing a little Ground Launching with some friends here in Colorado (launching from 6800 MSL with a density altitude likely somewhere likely close to 9000 feet, maybe more) and my Samurai 136 loaded at 1.3:1 did not perform nearly as well as the lesser experienced guys who were flying lighter loaded canopies. So do you guys have an equation that might work? I know the California Ground Launching guys say they've seen the best performance in the 1.3 - 1.4 wingloading. But due to our higher density altitude I'm thinking that 1.0 - 1.1 might be better. But an equation to convert their WL/DA to our DA might be better than just making a blanket guessing statement like I just did thinking that 1.1 would be better here. Make sense or am I just rambling ... again ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
What kind of canopy pilot are you?
CanuckInUSA replied to funks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh ... one more thing. I'm no canopy nazi. If you want to be a swooper, then fine, that's cool. Swooping rocks!!! Talk to us, we'll tell you how to become one. But it won't happen overnight and it's going to require hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of jumps as well as some coaching. But I can tell you that currently you've taken the wrong fork in the road. It's not too late to turn back. The choice is yours. I'm done here ... time to move on ... What kind of canopy pilot are you?
CanuckInUSA replied to funks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not true ... my big monster 293 and 303 BASE jumping canopies require plenty of piloting to put them down where they need to be put down just as the swoop machine cross-braced canopy needs to be piloted. Complacency kills in this sport and you're already showing signs of it. I will say that landing an airplane requires more multi-tasking than landing a canopy, but you can't possibly think that flying a canopy is easy. If you do you clearly haven't made enough jumps at enough different locations in enough variable weather conditions. Please pay attention to these next words. "Some people are better than others when it comes to flying their canopy and even swooping, but there are no short cuts. Swooping still requires hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of jumps starting on larger canopies before you downsize to smaller ones". To think that you are special just because you are a pilot is a major mistake. You can choose to ignore this advice, ultimately it's your ass. But just know that the more experienced people here know way more about canopy flight than you do. If you don't understand why I say this, then maybe it's time you showed us what you're really capable of doing. Hook it hard bro ... I mean it's easy right? Show us how it's done. There's nothing to flying a high performance Sabre 170 canopy right? If a sac of dog food can make a BASE jump then you can show us all how to swoop. I'm guessing you'll be a winning PST events before the summer is out right? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
