whats so wrong with a round reserve??
JohanW replied to jasleegoyne's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, it is open. Johan. I am. I think. -
December being summer in SA, this should have nothing to do with sharing body heat. So it seems safe to say, yeah, wanna. Johan. I am. I think.

Vague plans. Quite vague. Will the Herc be there all days? Are jump prices from the Herc indeed the same as from the other planes? What travel documentation might one need to visit SA? Will my family be able to survive New Year's Day without me? Will my inheritance? And, excuse my cynicism, does confirmed mean the Herc will really be there? Was it there last time? EDIT: saly says the organisers say it was there last year. That's a good start. Has anyone actually seen it? Johan. I am. I think.
-
You have a bloody Herc confirmed for this boogie ?!?

for appr. 49 people landing out values of very well .. because we overflew the airfield on a downwind jumprun. By a mile. Vibes to the two downed birds, but other than that - it was fantastic. Johan. I am. I think.

I stow my toggles without ever dropping them after landing, so I never really get twists in the brakelines. I check every now and then, but not even every weekend. I used to, but it really wasn't necessary. If for whatever reason I drop my toggles in flight, I do check them before setting the brakes. Setting the brakes may happen on the field waiting for the van, sometimes in the van, sometimes in the hangar, but part of the packing process is checking they're set. I don't stow the slack. I have about a foot of half brake, and if I stow it, I can't get the slider over it. So I'm very careful with grabbing the toggles and releasing the brakes after opening. It's a trade-off, I know that. It's not laziness. There are more things about my jumping I wouldn't recommend to just anyone, and steps taken at one point because of other steps at another point. I'm comfortable with my way of doing things. Johan. I am. I think.

Pre-Cochstedt weekend @ Schaffen (info on sleeping/driving etc)
JohanW replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
I have honestly, positively no idea what Jarno is on about. A spare slut would seem to imply I have a primary one. Without attaching any moral judgement, I can affirmatively deny there is any such thing. Person. Object. Thingy. Damn I'm straight. Johan. I am. I think. -
WS, chest mounted altimeters, full face helmets
JohanW replied to Waldschrat's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Hmmmmmmmmm. I'd say you were lucky. I'd say you didn't give yourself every chance you might have had. Glad you're still here. Hope you smarten up a little. No offence. Do you have riser inserts? Sounds like they would have helped with the cutaway. If my head were pinned to my chest, and the canopy isn't flying perfectly straight and not reacting to harness input at all, I'm chopping. It's going to take too long, esp. if I can't move the twist to below the links and see which way I have to untwist. There are canopies that fly perfectly straight and do not react to harness at all; if you don't have one like that, you might have to take into account where you're going and chop immediately if you don't like it. That's an unnecessary decision moment. Decision moments take time. BTW, you can chop without unzipping. You seem to have a chest mount alti somewhere centered. With your head pinned down, you want either an alti on a wrist which you can swing into view, or one mounted to either side you can see past the nose of the helmet, or a different helmet. Now did you or did you not have a right arm belt mounted alti? If you can see that one, you don't need the other one, do you? Also, there's Eyeballs Mk. One. The violent spin started after freeing your arms, when you went to the risers. What good would using wing cutaways do over unzipping? I tend to regard the cutaways as for use only when a zipper gets stuck; unzipping is as fast and gives more freedom of movement. (Try this one on the ground sometime - cut the armwings away and raise your arms. Preferably unpacked and with someone holding up your risers.) You pulled at 3500'. Your Dytter was set for 3200m, 1900m, 1100m, which is roughly 10000'(why?), 6000' (why?), 3500'. Why not set it for separation, opening, hard deck? Could you please explain this? I really don't get it, and I think I would like to discuss. Yes, I think I can follow you, and I don't necessarily agree with all your conclusions. There are other, in my not very humble opinion better, options. But I'm sure glad you're still here to talk about it. (I'd take this to PMs because I can just see the thread being kidnapped. But I think there's much to be learned here. Kidnappers, please constrain yourselves.) Johan. I am. I think. -
As long as things go OK, they tend to go OK. He's probably (hopefully) beyond that point now, but if he had experienced a flatspin, a blown wing, or just a bootie coming off early on, he might have proven why you may not need many jumps, but do need to be free in the air and able to handle excrement hitting spinning things. Johan. I am. I think.

Sounds familiar. I used to jump a Tri 135 that had been packed several years; repacked it, never had a problem. A terminal opening might have been funky, there's spinner potential there indeed, but it didn't seem to affect structural integrity after unpeeling it. Johan. I am. I think.

Pre-Cochstedt weekend @ Schaffen (info on sleeping/driving etc)
JohanW replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Johan I plan on driving to Schaffen Saturday morning, returning Sunday night, going to Cochstedt on Monday during the day. Plenty of room for luggage. Might be going straight from Hilversum DZ to Schaffen; there's a party on Friday night. If I can help somebody out, I'm flexible. Rotterdam (NL) to Belgium, FLB weekend, Belgium to Rotterdam (NL) - 1 place available Rotterdam to Cochstedt, AN72 Boogie, Cochstedt to Rotterdam (NL) - 1 place available Johan. I am. I think. -
Yes, he earth stops shaking and the heaven stops moving a little after X number of jumps. It's not exactly settling into a 'routine', but it's a valid alternative to getting groceries on a Saturday afternoon. I'm not as gung-ho now as I used to be to jump in questionable circumstances e.g. I might opt to start the 'my beer drinking club has a poker problem' early, instead of getting in that one last sunset hop&pop. I might, Heaven forbid, schedule my skydiving into my Life, instead of the other way around. Which doesn't mean at all it isn't a boatload of fun. But it's something to do well, instead of just do. To answer your last question, I'd say that really started around #900 for me. Long before that, the overexcitement wears off. Johan. I am. I think.

I say .. Chuck him in the tunnel

From the list I have experience with the Pilot and the Silhouette with a wingsuit, and they do well, but I can personally vouch for the Triathlon, my current weapon of choice. It flies straight in up to five twists, at a 1.8 loading. I can't imagine a Spectre wouldn't serve outstanding as well. Johan. I am. I think.

Late night beer induced wingsuit thought!
JohanW replied to WooHoo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've never seen points being subtracted. But the starting point has been moved down when people were going too far. Johan. I am. I think. -
Rodeoes can be done on horses with or without wingsuit. I actually practiced once without suit with me in a delta before I put on my suit. I now have about a dozen - they're fun, but you don't get to see the rider's grin until you're back on the ground. They make a great base for a tracking jump too

What makes someone pick the place to make thier first jump?
JohanW replied to Fast's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
They had a package deal for a week's vacation - and I wanted a week's vacation. I could have sailed a catamaran, or ridden a bike around a lake for a week, but I ended up jumping from a plane. I guess it took. This was Static Line of course, not tandem. Never saw any of my fellow students again BTW. Johan. I am. I think. -
The URL is mms://twc.wmod.llnwd.net/a189/e1/multimedia/video/limelight/epic_wm_barlia_bb.asf I don't know how long that one will be there, but I suppose it will make its way onto skydivingmovies.com now. Johan. I am. I think.

No, I haven't seen swans take off and land. In person. However .. Take off .. Touch down ..
-
Done! Johan. I am. I think.

However, when it dries, lines, tapes and fabric may shrink differently, affecting shape, and thus performance. So no, a wet canopy doesn't really fly any different. It may open just a little harder. A dry canopy, on the other hand .. Johan. I am. I think.
-
Yes. It gets wet. And so do you. Don't. Johan. I am. I think.

Can we not go there?
