    Holy war

I think that was due to criticising the commander in chief. I think public criticism of your superior officer would at least land you on their shitty job list (did when I was in). Criticising the chain of command is a little different to voicing a personal opinion on another given subject. I think what the general said was inappropriate given the position that he has. It was a propaganda gift and I would have thought that the general on question would have shown better judgement. David

  3. Idiot? I think he should get his knuckles rapped if only to deter other idiots from trying the same thing. Not the best of ideas regardless of his intentions. David
  4. Well isn't gravity from the sun constantly acting on the earth? Wouldn't that make it already there unlike the light which would be generated from the release of energy by hydrogen fusion? David

    UN Resolution

I will have to add that it was not the French alone that had several contributions to the adopted resolution. Germany and Russia were also not satisfied with the initial resolution and reworked it. While the actions of France have been the subject of much debate here they were not alone in their opposition and so I think they're taking a bit more flack than they deserve. Was the threat of veto wrong prior to the conflict? That decision has been made and the consequences have been shown. I would like to believe that the UN can move on past that debate (this resolution is a step in that direction) and that the suggestions of member countries be taken on merit without sliding into old wounds. just 2 cents. David Edit Though I can appreciate some of the humour in a post

    UN Resolution

I think the French position was excessive by declaring a one month timetable. That I believe was nowhere near realistic. As for not putting up a fight I think had the resolution "required" and not "encouraged" contributions then there would have been more noise. It could be a case of "we'll let this pass so we can say we never stood in the way if things get better" but not commit to anything until we see what the situation is further down the line and things get worse. Again the WIIFM is big as it always is. David
  7. That's what I was thinking it was the speed idea that threw me for a loop. I believed that the forces would be constantly acting upon an object with the net effect being what was observed i.e. just because you experience lift does not mean that gravity isn't still acting on an object but that the force of lift is greater with lift being the net result. As for photons and gold leaf experiments yes it behaves as a particle and a wave form and at that point I pretty much accepted behaviour in my world to be what it would be. Physics is great when you neglect friction etc. but I was more interested in what happened big scale in my world than microscale in theory. David
  8. I thought gravity was a force that was always acting upon an object but that the effect of the gravitational force was dependant upon other oppositte forces that would balance it out. Light as a photon is a discrete object and is treated differently. Or am I off target again? David

    UN Resolution

I wouldn't say they've hopped on board as they are not sending troops or pledging cash. Syria has an out to not get involved as it's a neighbouring nation to Iraq. I think the resolution was more for Iraq and a realisation that Iraq needs international help to be rebuilt. I believe Colin Powell said words to that effect after the resolution was adopted. David

    UN Resolution

Hi Michelle, I'd seen this earlier but I was getting tired o fthe political threads (things seemed to have calmed down here politically wise and didn't feel like bringing it back up again) and was trying to shift my focus to baseball instead. But Grady Little ruined October baseball so here I am. It is good news and it gives recognition that Iraq is in need of help from the International Community. It encourages nations to contribute but several of the nations that voted for the resolution have said they will not provide troops or money regardless of the resolution that they just voted for. There's also a story on an Iraqi cop on the BBC webpage. It shows them working with the US militrary police and gives a little insight into how the cops are changing and being separate from the military. David

    Holy war

True enough but his comments can be used as a recruiting tool because it reinforces what the jihad preachers are saying. I think it would be better if he hadn't said it given the way it can be manipulated by those that he is fighting. My 2 cents. David
  12. You can only conquer with the cunning use of flags, hence the no flag no country rule. The US already has a flag there so you should be all set. David
  13. Are you really a QPR fan? I never knew they existed. I think a fair bit of the BBC coverage stems from the old world service broadcasting to the Empire and the Colonies, therefore a world view is taken. Fox did report the Nobel prizes as they are a newsworthy story (on Friday) it was merely an editorial decision that other news would be of more interest to its viewers on Tuesday. Seems fair to me and quite a bit different to undereporting a domestic story that would be of interest to the US electorate. So anyway why is Nomar not batting in many runs in the ACLS? DAvid
  14. A couple of things I take from this poll are that the Baghdad residents do not want the troops to leave and that they are scared to go out during the day. Not so much we like you here as, "we think the place will go downhill/Saddam will come back if you leave" I'm confident that once SH is caught, an Iraqi police force is set up and the Iraqis can take care of their own affairs they would like the US presence reduced. Now some other ramblings. I'm also pretty sure that the Turkish solidiers are not welcome given the reasons from the Iraqi council/ the history with the Kurds and the sensible notion that everyone in the region has an agenda that does not put Iraq's best interests at heart. Also as we're on the topic does anyone have a comment about this story? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3190934.stm Looks like an officer wrote letters for his troops to send home. It makes me a little suspicious about all the football fields people have been building. I've 5 bucks that says Iraq won't win the Football world cup in the next 12 years. Any takers? David
  15. I was just about to suggest Jumptown but you found out already. Cool, I'm glad you can jump. David

    Not again.!

Look on the bright side at least you'll be going during the South Atlantic summer. Oh wait it's the Falklands there really isn't a bright side. David
  17. We had one in Orange, MA a couple of years ago at Thanksgiving where I believe it was around -20F on exit. Add in the windchill and it was seriously cold on the way down. I think I had a touch of frostbite on my nose as I could only smell something burning for the whole week afterwards. David
  18. Look for a decent headover, balaclava that is reasonably windproof. I got mine from Eastern Mountain Sports for $15 and that's all I need for Massachusetts. Cheaper than a full face but I'm looking to upgrade as well. David
  19. It's the amount of temporary jobs that is good and bad, Good in that there's an increase in work so hopefully the temp jobs will transition into full time employment. Bad is the limbo of the temp job without benfits. Still a temp job beats sitting on the couch getting deeper in credit card debt. David
  20. I can't listen to it Damn computer speakers don't work. David
  21. I hit the link this morning but I've been unable to find anything about it on Fox, Reuters or the BBC. Those stations seem to be more interested in N.Korea and the report to congress by David Kay. David
  22. Only problem with your argument is that there are weapons inspectors that haven't found anything. Hans Blix has said it's unlikely, The Iraqi scientist had centrifuge equipment buried from 10 years ago not 2 or 3 (suggesting it was forgotten about after GW 1 and not buried more recently). There is the article in Time magazine where several players in the WMD field were interviewed and said there's nothing. Also an Iraqi officer was interviewed where he stated that if they had WMD they would have used it to defend the airport. There have been no significant finds of production facilities and the stories coming out now are of a regime that was either bluffing or that the scientists involved were lying to SH so he never shot them (a plausible explanation in my view). I doubt the current administration will plant anything but I do doubt they'll find anything. I think if they're lucky they may find a couple of battlefield artillery rounds but that's about it. David
  23. Is that with Buy it now? On a serious note no time frame was mentioned for when the arrests happened. So it could be possible that this was some of the intelligence that PM Blair and President Bush used to make their decision. Hell the story could be mentioned in the interim report that is being given by Kay today but so far neither the BBC nor Fox have reproted it. On a happier note I went to the site that was linked and my new bride should be here in a week or two. David
  24. I went to the Bestbuy webpage, searched for it and got the system requirements that way. I'm having a busy work day. David
