Carry on rigs with AAD - what's the deal?
grue replied to milehigheric's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
At this point, the travel insurance covers me :) It's still an inconvenience but I'll take that over potentially dying because some halfwit managed to do something I didn't realize Truth. cavete terrae. -

Carry on rigs with AAD - what's the deal?
grue replied to milehigheric's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
One year at Seville security were sending everybody (bear in mind this was the Christmas boogie, so this was dozens of people at a time) back to check their rigs in. Since this meant Ryan Air for many, it meant eye-watering excess baggage charges and not a few tears as panicked people had to re-queue while their planes were boarding. Lots of speculation resulted about them being in cahoots. End result of this and other incidents though is that my rig goes in the hold in a hard case. It's out of my sight, but my rigger uses a seal and the rest I can check carefully at the other end. You're far more trusting than I am. Not just the possibility of damage, but being out $7k if it doesn't arrive. The airline will NOT pay it. I forgot about this because it was solved so quickly, but TSA tried to get me to check the rig once. I said the FAA recommends carrying it on, and the only way I'm checking it is if I get a written confirmation that the TSA will cover a full inspection by a rigger upon arrival, and 100% of new replacement cost including rush construction fees if the rig is lost or damaged in any way. You're welcome to guess where the rig ended up :P cavete terrae. -

I came back to this thread because of this part, it was kinda bugging me because when I was younger, this is precisely what I thought about people who drink, smoke, or take drugs. I thought it was a coping mechanism for people whose life is so bad they can't deal with it. Now I realize that (actual destructive addicts aside) they're just trying to enjoy life in the way they chose to do so, and I'm a dick if I judge 'em for that. cavete terrae. -

Carry on rigs with AAD - what's the deal?

I've had trouble exactly twice: 1. Melbourne, where I had to open my main and repack it right in the terminal. 2. Auckland, where they jumped so far up my ass they could tell I'd eaten five minutes beforehand. In the future, I'd suggest thinking like this: There's a little electronic gizmo that runs the system. Here's the card from the manufacturer (they include the card. If you don't have one, they're not hard to get). cavete terrae. -
If a person only had the budget for one suit but wanted maximum versatility, would said person want to use a regular freefly suit in a tunnel, or get the "tunnel suit" option and use it in the sky as well? cavete terrae.

USA min requirements for tracking suits ( Tube 3 )
grue replied to moiye's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The US government are a bunch of assholes, but compared to Australia it is MUCH less of a beige cardigan-wearing nannyocracy. I love Australia, I've lived here almost 1/3 of my life, but the abundance of cowardice in the form of overregulation of every conceivable thing drives me batshit fucking crazy. I bet you never jumped in Russia Not yet… but I'd like to some day. cavete terrae. -

Born there, did a bunch of jumps in December there as well with no AAD :P Did they introduce a helmet law for bicycles? cavete terrae. -

Overregulation is typical in most governments. Like you I love my country, I just have no stomach for my government. It should be remembered that regulations like most laws in your country as well as mine come from dysfunctional people like Politicians. This garbage who can't get a real job must show some kind of performance to justify their useless positions. That about sums it up. At least in the US you don't get a ticket for riding a bicycle without a helmet, and you can find DZs that don't require AADs cavete terrae. -

I think the average person is risk adverse to the point of comedy. That's fine, but what shits me are the cowards who try and force their boring beige cardigan-wearing lifestyle on us, which frequently happens in the form of regulation. Ugh. I've got a decent mix among my friends. A lot of my friends I know through skydiving or sportbikes or similar pursuits, but I've also got some friends who wouldn't jump across a two foot wide hole for a thousand bucks. cavete terrae. -
This - a million times this. I think there is a blind spot where smokers think a cigarette end is not litter. Even if there is a trash can 3 feet away. ETA. I like the word Twatwaffle. Yep, and fuck those assholes who flick the butts out the window when driving. And especially FUCK that shithead who flicked one out at night and it exploded in a shower of sparks off my windshield. Took one to the visor on the bike once. While I feel my reaction was perhaps somewhat over the top, I expect he won't be likely to forget it. cavete terrae.

source: http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/legal_guides/u-3.shtml How is it a sweepstakes if someone has to pay to participate? Linking legal guides from CA likely has little bearing on a company based in FL. They talked to their lawyers in FL. Lawyers said they're good. I'm just pissed I waited too long to buy a ticket. And to correct my original post -- god damn what a bunch of fucking crybabys this sport has bred. (not directed at you bytch) This. Ten times, this. Though I was clued in enough to buy a ticket, and even informed friends who I thought might be interested cavete terrae.

My feelings can be summed up as follows: 1. I think it's a filthy habit and I avoid people who partake for the most part. 2. I think it should be legal for any consenting adult to do anything with his or her own body, in the privacy of his or her own home, so long as he or she is not affecting the life, liberty or property of others without their consent. 3. Children cannot give informed consent, thus exposing them to smoke is a direct violation of point 2. 4. I don't like children, but I dislike overregulation more so I don't think the government is the solution. 5. I DO like the idea of people being called out and shamed by their peers for things like that. 6. My mother smoked, I thought it was disgusting, but couldn't do anything about it because she was my mom and I was a kid. She also drank too much and that disgusted me as well. Thus, I do not drink or smoke, and never have. 7. This protein shake is delicious. edited to add: 8. Attn: Smokers – STOP. FUCKING. LITTERING. YOU. GOD. DAMNED. TWATWAFFLES. cavete terrae.

Slider placement on Hop n Pops
grue replied to Bloomin0nion12's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
My personal policy: Never leave my rig in a configuration I wouldn't be willing to jump the next day. A good friend of mine had a terminal reserve ride because at the end of the day he used to stow his hackey inside the BOC pouch. He'd thrown his rig into the trunk because he thought he was done, and then got talked into one more jump. 40 minutes later (yay Cessnas) he reached for a hackey that wasn't there and had to pull silver. This is the same reason I don't zip tie my reserve handle when I travel or any of the other shit I've heard people suggest over the years. cavete terrae. -
Or when you do your first jump back after a year and a half layoff, and the pattern gets set downwind with your 1.4 wingload. That happened for me back in December. Ran it out, but sheesh. cavete terrae.

Damn, that is a hell of a wait. I was in a similar situation to you, I'm not sized like a "normal skydiver" and ended up buying a new custom container sized for a canopy 1 size smaller than I was going to put in it at first (after talking to the manufacturer to make sure it'd safe. He said it'd be tight but safe. He didn't mention his definition of "tight" is like "fitting a cow into a briefcase" :P) If I ever sell the rig, and I can't imagine why I ever would, I'm sure there's some tall focker out there who'll be happy to buy it when the time comes. cavete terrae.

Raven IV -> Fusion 210 -> Fusion 190. If I downsize again, and I don't know why I would, it'll be a Fusion 170. cavete terrae.

Surely those of us who have been skydiving more than a few years remember how many people used to jump in Tevas… … (guilty!) cavete terrae.
