During soccer season, I've always had a deeper voice from yelling so much. At the uni level, the goalie is expected to essentially run the field, and since I was a captain, it was double duty, so I was yelling all game, every game. Then during practices, I'm yelling during drills. I barely ever talk outside of games and practices during season to give my voice a chance to recover cavete terrae.

I popped my reserve on the ground yesterday before I gave it to my rigger for a repack, and WOW was I surprised at how far that PC launched cavete terrae.

So... any south bay area jumpers looking for a roommate?
grue replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
I'm job hunting out there and it looks like there's a fairly decent chance I'll be getting a job in the south bay. Anyone need a roommate? That's south bay area of northern california, to alleviate any confusion, e.g. cupertino, palo alto, mutant view, etc. cavete terrae. -

I wouldn't take a hard disk based MP3 player over 10,000. There's not enough air density to float the head(s) above the platters, and you can ruin the disk. I learned this one the hard way My flash-based player, on the other hand, has about 50 jumps cavete terrae.

Whereas with CDMA you're locked to the phones your carrier wants you to have, and your phone is worthless outside of America, more or less. I personally use GSM because I refuse to use carrier firmware which is usually inferior, and I travel internationally quite a bit, so it's easy to just pop a local prepaid SIM in my mobile and have everything I need right there. That and the fact that most of the CDMA phones are awful, because the CDMA market is miniscule compared to the GSM market from the manufacturer perspective. I think within the next few months I'll probably be able to get a high end phone that'll finally do everything I want, and then I won't have to buy a new phone for years. cavete terrae.

As justin mentioned above, I've got a Fusion 210, loading it at around 1.2± a bit depending on the day. It's a VERY good canopy in my opinion, and my next canopy will most likely be a Fusion 190. I had 44 jumps when I got mine, so I might have chosen the size a little aggressively, but I haven't run into any problems. While it's got enough performance to be brisk, it doesn't put the fear of god into me because it's docile enough to let me stay in control. The flare is VERY powerful. I tend to stab the toggles a few inches to start my landing, and that's all I need. The first time I landed it, I flared it like a Raven IV and found myself quite a bit higher than I was a moment before . One tip: Collapsing the slider and stowing it behind your head (if you have compatible risers and loosening your chest strap (talk to your instructors about both of these) has a dramatic effect on the flare power. Openings are very soft. I usually psycho pack it, but when I do propack it, I don't roll the nose at all, just quarter the slider, and it's still a very comfortable opening. The glide ratio? SICK. I've made it back from some jumps that I had no business making it back from Spread the rear risers just a tiny bit to max it out. The only downsides I can think of: 1. The HMA lines are ass-ugly because of the colour. If they were black, that'd be pretty sweet. 2. There aren't many out there, it seems, so a lot of people know nothing about them, or haven't even heard of them. This might also have an effect on the resale value, I'll know for sure in a few months cavete terrae.

Having finally put 50 jumps on this canopy, I feel I can review it. I bought a Fusion 210 (loading around a 1.2) for my first canopy. The one I got was gently used with about 110 jumps on it, and my first impression of it was that I thought I had a streamer when I threw the PC. Coming from a canopy that opened like a bomb going off, I was surprised to look up and actually watch the canopy open. The canopy is very responsive to both toggle and riser input, without a lot of oversteer. The glide ratio is staggering, getting me back from questionable spots with minimal drama. When it comes to landings, this is where the canopy still impresses me: The flare power is very strong all through the flare. Especially with the slider collapsed/stowed and the chest strap loosened, this canopy doesn't require much of a stroke to get the flare started, really just a few inches. I don't think it'd be fair to comment on the packing too much, because my container is very aggressively sized and bagging anything this size is horrifyingly difficult. I've demoed other canopies in the same class, and there's no doubt in my mind that my next canopy will be another Fusion, just a bit smaller next time around. The only change I'd make would be to change the colour of the HMA lines. I know they're available in black, and I think using these would be more aesthetically pleasing, but of course that has nothing to do with performance.

I disagree. When you forget past history, it makes the events more likely to repeat themselves in the future. Oh, I think people should remember, but there comes a time to move on. cavete terrae.

MULLINS KING AIR Boogie - July 1/2/3 - Luverne, MN with NIGHT JUMPS!
grue replied to grue's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Yup, we recently confirmed we'll run on the 3rd, we just haven't updated the site yet cavete terrae. -
I wasn't there for it, but a series of events allegedly involving a questionable-but-recoverable spot coupled with a student who didn't particularly want to listen to the radio commands. The last words of the ground instructor over the radio when he realised there was no way the kid was going to make it back: "Farewell and godspeed" cavete terrae.

I wouldn't pay to see it. Not out of any ethical/moral reasons, I just don't think it'll be my kind of movie. Plus, I already know how it ends. I personally don't have any problems with 9/11 movies being made. It's coming up on 5 years ago. Yes, it was a terrible thing to have happen, but if you constantly roll around in the dirt of the past, you're throwing away the possibility of a clean future. As for the movie? It's entertainment. So was Schindler's List, so was Apocalypse Now, so was Platoon, etc etc. If you don't support the movie... don't support the movie. The people that try and block stuff like this from getting made are in no way better than those who burn books or try and get video games banned. If you don't like it, don't watch/read/play it. cavete terrae.

Have you tried the milk chocolate or mint chocolate covered oreos? The white fudge dipped ones ALMOST make me believe there's a god. cavete terrae.

grue replied to grue's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Whoops, I did forget it. Jump cost hasn't been determined for sure yet. Last year, it was $22/jump. I can't recall off the top of my head how much registration was, though. cavete terrae. -
I heard it's going to be run by robots. Can they pack? cavete terrae.

MULLINS KING AIR Boogie - July 1/2/3 - Luverne, MN with NIGHT JUMPS!
grue replied to grue's topic in Events & Places to Jump
We're getting close to our favourite time of the year up in Luverne, when Mike Mullins brings his King Air to town for some fun. This year, we will be offering **NIGHT JUMPS** from the King Air. For these jumps, we're trying to get some sort of pre-registration going, so if you're interested, PLEASE post in this thread or send a PM to me. You'll need to supply your own high-visibility light to meet FAA requirements, and a flashlight to check your canopy. We should be able to supply cyalumes, though as of right now cost for this is undetermined. I'll update this thread when we know for sure. There's even a rumour about some possible formation loads happening during the daytime... Thread will be updated as more information becomes available! The boogie is at Skydive Adventures in Luverne, Minnesota. The nearest airports of note are as follows: Sioux Falls, SD (Approx 30 minutes, though not served by all airlines) Omaha, NE (210 miles or so, speed limit varies between 70 and 75mph) Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN (215 miles or so, speed limit varies between 55 and 65) We will have on-site camping, although for the hotel crews there are accomodations about 2 miles from the DZ in town. cavete terrae.
