Jerry, You should be a resource for the museum. Your recollection of this history is accurate and detailed. But don't leave out the other "imitators". The "paddles". (Maybe the YES thing) and the frap wrap. The frap wrap was Ted Strong's attempt at a single point release. I don't know what the real name of the system was called but it acquired the nickname at a Z-Hills Turkey Meet. Ted had set up a suspended harness to demonstrate it. Someone pulled the handle and had to struggle, shifting his weight left and right to get one side to release. A properly built 3-Ring never (?) had a problem. Until '83 when Forgecraft started delivering RW1s that were improperly hardened. (Or not hardened at all) RW1s were stretching during hard openings thereby making them narrower and the RW2 would not flip through. I don't know if anyone died because of it but there were several serious incidents. Forgecraft, at their expense made the RW4(?). The separable version of the RW1. I had the job at the time of putting the harnesses on the container. So I also had the job of replacing the bad RW1s. Most of the time we could cut the bad RW1s off with bolt cutters and slide the bar of the separable RW4. But I had been doing this for a while and the ones that I had put together originally were so tight that often times I had to take the confluence wrap off and rethread the hardware on the harness. Bill fussed at me a little for doing too good a job putting the harness and containers together. The RW4 proved to be an extremely useful piece of hardware. They gave RWS 10,000 pieces free because they had made the mistake of not running them through the final hardening process. Bill wanted to buy more because it was so useful but Forgecraft wanted to sell the dies. Bill said it wasn't worth it so Forgecraft destroyed the molds. Well, this has run on longer than I meant to. Three rings started being put on '77 or '78, I think, They were originally a forged "5010" ring from Forgecraft. After Bill saw that it was going to be accepted and the other manufacturers started wanting the kits he had Forgecraft make the mold for the sloted RW1. It's very expensive to have that done. I first met Troy Loney, who designed & developed the Centaurus rig, about 1981 in the Denver area. I have no idea if he was building/rigging before that time. Just a wild shot in the dark, Jerry Baumchen The Centaurus had to be before '81. It was berfore the Wonderhog Vector and Mirror Image introduced the Vector at the World meet in Z'Hills in '81. A bit of trivia on the emblem.Dave Story drew that not long after we got back from the nationals at Tallaquah in '73. (The first 4 way team from Fla. Dial-A-Star) He did the circle and the inside arcs for "Florida" "Parachute" "Concil" but I think he ahd a different graphic for the inside.He gave it to the guy rinning the concil at the time, I think he was from Titusville but I may be wrong about that. The closing loops were anchored to the top (outside) flap. When the pins were pulled, the pilot chute had to push through all the flaps like most rigs but that top flap having to pull the loops through the packjob added a good deal of resistance. There were some table totals and a lot of the time the pilot chute would just lazily stand up in the container. Very few actually jumped out like you would want to see. Actually, I think that's THE problem with the death penalty. The method of execution is secondary. I think sometimes the investegators take an easy way out and don't look into enough things (leads). Prosecutors have to convince themselves that the person charged is guilty in order to argue the death penalty. Then they have no moral qualms about manipulating the evidence. That makes the system seem like a jury of 1. There are certainly people who do things that are so horrendous that they deserve to die. But since the death penalty is not reversable it should be "to a certainty", not just "beyond reasonable doubt." I can't imagine me doing anything bad emough to warrent the death penalty BUT if I had to choose, I would want a bullit to the back of the head. That "walnut" that snipers talk about. I'd be dead before the bullit came out my face. I think that's how they do it in China. (They even charge the family for the bullit) Probably the quickest and most painless method for the condemed. For the witnesses, however, it might be a little unverving. If they are to die in a calm, peaceful state and not upset the witnesses, old age might be the only way. Actually, they do come straight out and tell you who actually killed Jeoffry in the book. He admits it. It's towards the end of book 5 though (the last book). I won't give any of it away though. You'll have to read the book or wait for it to show up in the show... When I read it, I wasn't taking anythin he said without corrobruation (sp). I think now that he probably did do it. Martin leaves a lot of unresolved points but the story keeps going. Who sent the guy to kill Brandon with Tyrions knife? That set up a small shit storm but was it ever revialed? I may have missed it. I'm a regular part time employee at Lowe's and I work on a cash register. (Raeford Rd. in Fayetteville) If our doors are open, we give the military discount to anyone with an ID card. Active, retired, dependent, VA what ever you've got. All day every day. I've never seen any of the check out pwople question or hassle any card holder. Do tell...... No spoilers from me. At least not on purpose. But now we've got a better idea of who (whom?) may be responsible for Joffery's death. We didn't see anything of the Bolton Bastard or Theon (Reek) in this episode. The Bastard makes Joffery look like an amature. He's even worse in the books. I've saddled out at 300 ft. Twice. On jump #14 and again about a thousand jumps later. For severel thousand jumps after that I tried to avoid having that much fin. I don't think the book ever says straight out who did it. It does allude to who may have been behind it. The Hounds fight scene in the tavern when Arya gets Needle back is one of my 4 or 5 favorite scenes. So far. Oh, yeah. When I was working at Ted Strongs shop in Orlando, Ron Johnson and I did a pretty good job of figureing it out. I had been cleaning old stuff out from under the packing table and found a BIG box of nylon rope. Ted said it was from a Sky Hook system. I asked and he said I could have it. I had tried the parasail thing three other seperate times. None of them ended well. All the crashes were off to the side even when the rider/pilot was trying his damndest to turn back toward the center line of the vehicle. The solution, I figured, was to quit being a kite and go back to being a parachute. That is release the tow line. And now we had one hell of a tow line. This rope was one inch wide, braided, and hollow. Did I mention that it was one MILE long. We put B-12 snaps on the end of a 3 - ring riser and put a cut-a-way handle on the velcro where the toggle would normally go.The B-12s snap onto the large harness ring of the pilots rig. We put a very large ring on the end of the tow line and we were set. The whole crew consistied of 5 people. The driver, an observer (with the driver), 2 launchers, and of course the pilot. With the rope streched out, the pilot would attach the yoke (3-ring riser) to the tow line as the launcher spead the canopy out behind the pilot. When the pilot had himself attached to the tow line, he would get the toggles in his hands and hold his arms out to the side. This was the signal for the launchers to hold up the leading edge of the canopy centered on the pilot. The driver saw the canopy being held up and that was his signal the idle forward. This would pull the pilot at a walking speed and the canopy would inflate and launcher would let go. The observer would see the canopy inflated over the pilot and tell the driver to hit it. I don't know what the streach coeffecient was for that rope but the rubber band effect was somthing tremendous. The acceleration and climb were "dynamic" to say the least. When the car got to the end of the run, the pilot pulled the cut-a-way handle (the one on the yoke if it need be said) and could turn down wind and many times land back at the launch point. That makes it sound easy and it actually was. But there were a few things to keep in mind. As the pilot is walking with the inflated canopy over his head, he needs to be steering it to keep it on the center line. That is probably the MOST important thing. Stay on the center line. There is a certain angle off the center line beyond which the pilot will experience "lockout". And that angle gets narrower as you go up. The canopy wll turn to the outside and no amount of steering will bring it back. You'll be in a down plane with tow vehiclw. This is not good. The only way out of the situation is to stop being a kite and go back to being a parachute. Release the tow line. If I remember correctly, we could get 75 to 80 percent of the length of the tow line in altitude. A 500 ft; rope, 400 ftl up. And you would get there by time the vehicle had traveled the length of the rope. Back in 80 - 81 there were still a lot of fields around south Orlando. We eventually went to Palatka and got some long rides. 1,500 feet was the longest we tried, The biggest lesson we liearned was, "If it's too windy to jump, it's too windy to para sail."
