    "Speedometer"

Not even to an idiot? You have to explain everything to an idiot. Then the idiot doesn't get it anyway. That's when he becomes a stupid fucker. You tell the idiot that there His lights. Dogs at the DZ

I worked for PD for a little while inspecting the loaner canopies when they came back in. There was one Sabre 150 that a cat had pissed on. Inspecting that thing must have been punishment for being a very bad person in a previous life. After severel trips in and out Rags finally sugested to wash it in Downy detergent. It worked. Joe Morgan had a method for dealing with dogs shitting on the DZ. He said, "If you rub the owners nose in the dog shit, the dog will never shit there again." 8. If I see one head lamp comming at me, especially if it's on shoulder side of the road, I can't tell if it's a motorcycle or a car with a head lamp out. (It seems more often than not it's the car's left low beam that is out.) I some times flash the high beams to find out which. 9. I see the larger question as, "Why would anyone want to open so high by themselves?" The table in the back of my Parachutes Incorporated logbook says the distance fallen in 25 seconds is 3,745 ft. I was guessing that this was an open book test. The logbook is not as easy to use in freefall as Skymamma's stop watch. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. 13. (I posted this in another thread but this one seems more appropriate.) This is not about gun control in generel but about school security. Double the janatorial staff, Train them as security personel. Arm them. The schools will be better maintained and someone will be available on the scene to deal with the occassional catastrophy. It is an "occassional catastrophy." Even counting the minor incidents we don't hear about like a kid bringing a gun to school, a fight breaking out, given the number of schools and the number of really bad things that happen is statisically rare. These ARE catastrophies and even one is too many but there is no way to eliminate all bad things from happening. We can use this as a way to better maintain part of our crumbling infrastructure. 16. QuoteQuoteQuoteQuotereply] reply] It may depend on where the warning shot lands. The sholder of the axe wielding arm would be my choise. Firing a warning shot in a public setting such as this strikes me as a pretty bad idea. I wasn't there though and the article doesn't really set the scene very completely, so who knows. If a guy comes into an embassy wielding a knife and an axe, however, I'm not sure how far a warning shot would go to improve the situation... "Arrrrrrrgh! Eat Axe! Arrrrrrrrgh!" "That was a warning." "Oh, shit. Where's my axe? Fuck, where's my arm?" Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. 17. I wish the leaders of the national parties would read that. Politics is the art of the possible. If both sides realize that anyting can affect everything, there is a lot to bargain with on both sides. If either side says that something is "non-negoticiable" things are going to get bad fast. For both sides. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. Louis D Brandeis Where are we going and why are we in this basket?

  19. Flying down through that canyon/gully got my heart going. Just spectacular. I would take exception to the narators explaination of "time expansion". Fear os not the cause of the effect. (If that's the right way to say it.) Athletes experience the same thing when they are "in the zone". I'm affraid they didn't do very good research on that part of the story. Psychology Today September, 1969 (and partially reprinted in Parachutist, Jan. or Feb 1970) had an excellent article on performance under stress. It reported studiies on fire fighters, combat soldiers, skydivers, and another group that I've forgotten. Maybe athletes. Everyone experiences EITHER time expansion or time compression in moment of sttess. The next time you're trainning a student, ask if they've ever been in, say a car crash or some thing similar. If they can relate an instant by instant description of the event, they'll probably do well on their jump. If they say, "Well, I looked up and it was all over," you may want to tell them to go bowling. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. 20. I used a 26' conical as a main for about 100 jumps because it packed a lot smaller than PCs, Strato Stars, or even my Starlite. I put a center line on it. The apex was pulled down to the skirt, it had crown lines and even a couple of turn slots on each side. It had about as much drive as a wind drift indicator. But it packed really small and it let me make the next jump. That's a parachutes main job, after all. 1957 or 1958 Navy conicals had a bad batch from one manufacturer. (Switlik?) The story I heard was that they were shipped in a rail car that had been used for some kind of fire retardant. The canopiesd blew up pretty often. National Anthem

This was a really different version but I liked it anyway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXiCVtPiMsM&feature=related I've always thought that "America the Beautiflu" would have been a better choise when Congress selected a national anthem in the early '30. 23. Bill, hope things are going well for you. It was about '77 at the Z-Hills Turkey Boogie, I was on one of the Palatka teams. We were the 4th team to jump and as the second one left we got up and started to get in line. Jimmy Thrift asked me for a pin check. I told him his main pin wasn't seated all the way. He said go ahead and seat it. As soon as I touched it, it broke and his main container opened. Now we were forward in the DC-3, up by the cockpit, so not much chance of the thing getting out the door but our jump was going to be either a 9 man or we would all ride the plane down and pay for another ticket. I got his pilot chute out of his leg pouch and wrapped the bridle around the bag and strffed the pilot chute into the bag. At that point, Jimmy gave me the biggest (dumbest) compliment of my life. He said, "Come on. We can still do this. I'll just jump my reserve. You packed it so I'm not worried about it." I said being in freefall intentionally with only one parachute was a really bad idea no matter who packed it. I almost had to pull his reserve to get him to pomise not to follow us out. (No body wanted to pay for another jump.) We went out and had a pretty good jump, for us anyway. As we were packing some one came up and said we had been scored for a 21 second TEN way. The judges saw every one in and stopped the watch without counting the jumpers. I think it was Mike Waddel who went to the scoring table and told them the truth. We grumbled until we started congratulating each other on how honest and noble we ALL were. Nothing make the "good old days" as good as a bad memory of the good things. 24. This thing is about to hit an area that doesn't see storms like this very often. In the southeast, it's pretty routine. People take in stride. Folks in the northeast need to be serious about it. Katrina was a super storm and did a good deal of damage. The real catastrophe was man made, The levies failed and that's what caused the major portion of the damage in New Orleans.
