  1. yeah - I got that impression from the initial response - I've only jumped once so far so I'll take advice from those that have had several hundred % more experience than me... btw - I did update by number of jumps from 0 to 1 after my first jump
  2. I had more in mind just the basic moves you do within the AFF course - so I was just search for techniques/tips/tricks regarding these moves - my thinking was it might be good to get all info available to complement what the instructor would tell me....cheers Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  3. Hi, Out of all the info available on freefall/skydiving I'm actually having trouble finding a simple summary of how to do the various free fall moves. Just the basics such as turns, forward loop, back loop, roll, getting back to belly from your back, tracking, delta, docking etc). Anyone have a link to such a summary? (of course the instructor is going to go through this stuff, but I'm too eager to have to wait this long to find out a bit more ) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  4. funnily enough I wasn't really scared at all on my first jump, which I was expecting to be - I think with all the reading and watching youtube video's of cutaways etc etc I must have been somewhat prepared, plus the good training sessions - although I'm hearing you get most scared around the 3rd/4th jump apparently Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  5. thanks guys - yes I did mean "dive" (I guess I'd heard the downplane term and it just seemed to feel right when you see the chute diving like that) nice to know it should be less likely on the student chutes then :) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  6. only done my first jump so far - but am curious about the following: One some videos I see what looks like the parachute open and seemingly downplane as it's opening for a short period. On the video it seems the skydiving would be diving down as this occurs (hard to tell from the helmet mounted video angle) Question - Is this a typical situation you might get upon opening? Easy to get out of? Assuming your canopy itself opened square / no line twists etc could this ever turn into a possible situation where you'd need to follow emergency procedures? thanks Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  7. oh - like a paid service where you get to see the whole video? (as opposed to just seeing some clips from the video) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  8. ok then - thanks re Canopy Control Core Essentials will be available for download in the next 30 days - where would this be from DSE? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  9. Anyone know if there is a site which would allow me to buy some of the below mentioned videos such that I download it straight away (as opposed to ordering the DVD and waiting for shipping). I have sent emails to the main vendor sites for these DVDs however no reply yet, and based on their websites it seems they offer DVD order/shipping. One's that seem good for a beginner I was interested in: * Canopy Control - Core Essentials * Wingsuits 101 - Fundamental Flight Skills [ok this one's just for fun to have a look at] (seem to be from http://store.vasst.com/store/sky-diving-training.aspx) * Basic Canopy and Body Flight theory * The Skydiving Survival Series training videos (these seem to be from http://totalcontrol.com.au/dvd-c-21_23.html) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  10. great - thanks for the clarification guys Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  11. Can't make it out for the AFF course stage 2 jumps quite yet (so I've just done my first stage - fantastic stuff) and have a few questions...can't resist posting/asking here... a) In the AFF course does it include learning to do "coordinated turns" that I've been reading about? i.e. turn with harness input http://www.dropzone.com/content/Detailed/696.html b) re "coordinated turns" - if you turn right, which way do you actually lean in the harness? I couldn't quite work it out/imagine it when reading... c) I read this somewhere - "Don't track up or down the line of flight" - what does this mean? I'm guessing don't track over the DZ landing area/pattern? d) We got taught (if my memory serves me correct) that for a "two canopies out - byplane" you could attempt to land (very slow turns, no flare). In the log book I have it kind of implies that for any kind of "two canopies out" to cut away. For the byplane situation (one behind the other) is there a correct answer here? e) are there any malfunctions that could occur after you have had a good chute flying for a while? I don't recall in training any process/steps that require you to keep watching/monitoring altitude for the >2500' safe to go to reserve. Or in other words, once you've had a good chute flying, and you're not doing anything outlandish, can you assume the chute will be good until landing, hence as such not need to follow a mental awareness procedure re being aware when you're still over the 2500' for a safe reserve deployment? f) I heard that there are "belly bands" and these increase safety, but people don't typically use as they're not that cool... Question is anyway as a beginner is this something I should be asking for during my AFF course? g) we didn't have an audible (just altimeter) - would it be a good idea (i.e. be that little bit safer) to ask for an audible when learning? (or perhaps they want to teach people solid use of the altimeter first?) cheers PS I gather I should say blue skies here, but on my first jump we fell through clouds at 7000' and it was fantastic :) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  12. beer rules sound good! let me guess, is it none before your jumps, but as many as you can after? yeah - wasn't worried, but just really curious re the hook knife thing based on perception...it's been good that the more I've looked into skydiving the more I see its safer than I thought, both from process and equipment (e.g. reserve release mechanisms) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  13. Interesting. How much freefall time do you get in the the first 14 jumps by the way? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  14. Does use of wind tunnels reduce the risk getting through your beginner stage without injury? (so I haven't quite got to the stage of booking my first lesson in the AFF course, hence haven't jumped yet - so just curious about this) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  15. thanks for the great replies - oh - also wondering (may as well as the stupid questions): (a) carrying a knife be a small risk in it's own right? (b) what about the chance of dropping the knife when you go to use it anyway? or if it's on a cord it flying around in the wind and cutting you if you do drop it Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  16. wow - actually I did hear someone on one of the youtube videos talking about getting a 3:1 ratio (might have be a Jeb Corliss interview) - is this sort of ratio only for the very experienced perhaps then? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  17. (haven't done my first jump yet but am curious about this) I had thought the hook knife was used to cut away, however starting to readup / watch videos, it seems these days there are more advanced systems to cut away. Question - Does a sky diver still need to use a knife sometime? And if yes what percent of time would they need it? (e.g. only 5% of malfunctions?) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  18. How far could an average wingsuit flyer travel if they drop from 14000 foot? Assuming they want to be safe and not pull too late etc. Also just in a standard wingsuit that a club might have. (just interested to get an idea) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  19. thanks - no I didn't relize this when I wrote the post - makes more sense now Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  20. thanks for all the comments it's kind of funny as I was thinking landing would be harder than just free falling - but it seems then they pay more attention being with you during the free fall stage in fact (for a few jumps) but let you land by yourself almost straight away
  21. thanks zerospinskier - so are you kind of implying that the trickiest part then is the freefall/chute opening, and that the landing is less difficult in comparison? I mean I have no idea of course because I haven't jumped :) I guess I did have a look at the accident areas of skydiving and it seemed like the landing in particular had a large percentage of issues, so I guess that's what made me wonder why they would have a course where you have to land by yourself on the 2nd jump (if that makes sense) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  22. Hi, Just strongly considering starting an AFF course. What I'm wondering about is that from stage 2 (where you do your 2nd jump), whilst you're with 2x instructors in the air, once the shoot is properly up it seems you're by yourself to land if I'm reading things correctly. Assuming this is the case I guess my questions would be: Q1 - This seems a bit risky to have to land by yourself on the 2nd jump no? Q2 - I see there is a Tandem option as well. Would it be correct to say here you lower the risk re landing with little experience but perhaps sacrifice just a little of "true" skydiving technique? i.e. because perhaps in tandem the flying is a little different - noting the instructor with you? Q3 - Any recommendations overall re which of the paths to take when learning for your 2-4th stage (i.e. 2nd to 4th jump I think this roughly equates to)? i.e. Tandem Assisted vs AFF? Perhaps it should be Tandem assisted until you're comfortable with landing yourself? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
