  1. So I've just gone from an open face Cookie Ozone to a full face Phantom X helmet. I use an Optima II audible. Have done maybe 10 jumps with the full face. The thing is I don't think I'm noticing the audible indicator now - so my question is whether anyone else has noticed anything similar? e.g. moving to a new helmet and then not noticing the audible as much? Some notes: * I hear the 1000' warning going up in the plane * Hear the "under canopy" indicators fine * I think I might have noticed a break off indicator (5000') in a couple of the jumps, but the weird thing is I can't be sure - sounds silly I guess, but with the closed face it was loud and obvious - have been doing some 4-ways so you see others breaking off at the same time + use your wrist alti, so perhaps I'm hearing it but with all the other break off indicators it's just not sticking in my mind as the main indicator, so after the jump when I think back and ask myself "did I hear my audible" the answer isn't obvious [don't know if that makes any sense] * battery is ok * have it in the PhantomX pocket (left ear) with the little speaker pointing inward (admittedly I did have it in my right ear for my open face, but I think my hearing is ok in both ears) * have it set for max volume Wondering if the pocket in the Phantom X may not align as well with my ear? Perhaps just have to do a solo jump and concentrate on listening for it. Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  2. @TEB6363 - thanks - what about safety? there's no cutaway option for the helmet? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  3. Anyone tried / could comment on the Phantom X fullface helmet Visor/Lens mounting kit (see link below)? http://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p522.asp#PhantomXGoProLens (i.e. from context of would like to have GoPro mount on a fullface if it's possible to do safely. Still trying to determine if the Phantom X has a safety cutaway system too?) [inline CAM_GOPROPHANTOM.jpg] Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  4. got some requests for a Droid version (and metric support) - links here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4364085;#4364085 Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  5. I've had a few requests to be able to run the Practice Skydive Altimeter iPhone app on Android devices. So I made some time to do this and have stuck it on Google Play. So in summary for those learning and think this might be useful (which I found it was when I was doing AFF) the links are: Click here to download for Android devices! http://bit.ly/PDJgaU (e.g. Druid, NexusOne, Sensation, Galaxy Tab etc) Click here to download for iOS devices! http://bit.ly/PysGf9 (e.g. iPhone, iPad etc) Features: * Metric and Feet support - custom altimeter face for each * Jump height can be configured (e.g. 14,000 feet, or 4000m) * Three simulated audible alert sounds can be configured. For example for: - 1st: Breakoff, e.g. 5000 feet (or in meters) - 2nd: Pull, e.g. 4000 feet (or in meters) - 3rd: Warning, e.g. 1500 feet (or in meters) * Fall Rate (Belly Flying, or FreeFly/HeadDown) * Under canopy fallrate support Oh, the Version 3 release for IOS is still in the "waiting review" stage with Apple. Seems to take days for them before they can review & release out a developers new version...(as at 24th Aug 2012) V3 Images [inline iPhoneScreenShoot1_320x480.png] [inline iPhoneScreenShoot3_320x480.png] [inline iPhoneScreenShoot2_320x480.png] Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  6. wondering what would be the typical vertical descent speed be (just roughly) for a ram-air canopy at full glide....for say: * student canopy ~230 * intermediate ~170 * advanced (smaller canopy) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  7. thanks DSE - what about the best mount for a Contour? or would you normally use the mount that comes with the Contour itself? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT

  9. Trying to decide between GoPro & Contour. Safety & minimizing snag-point risk is a key determining factor. Can I ask: Q1 - What is the best mount to minimize snag point risk for each of these cameras? (I have a cookie ozone open face) a) Contour b) GoPro (e.g. http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/square-one-gopro-top-mount.html ?) Q2 - Given use of the above mounts (from Q1) would the contour still be safer from a snag point risk point of view? Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  10. what would be the normal timing for this jump - when I say timing I'm meaning when the middle & rear float would exit relative to the front float? (i.e. same time, fraction early, fraction later) - tracking dive with three, all outside the door - front float with back to wind (going onto back) [uses arm to do the out/in/out] - middle & rear float Background - For a normal flat (c.f. tracking dive), with front floater facing forward, I think it is: (a) front pushes out to side to give air to people behind, (b) middle float at same time as front, (c) rear float a fraction earlier. But wondering what the ideal would be for a tracking dive with 3 out the door.... Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  11. will "Moshi Universal Media Reader" (from Apple) cater for most camera cards at the DZ? i.e. for being able to grab copies of video's from other people's video cameras? http://store.apple.com/au/product/H6333VC/A/moshi-universal-media-reader?fnode=59&s=topSellers#mfr-info Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  12. What about removing some small minor marks without disassembling, but not via washing in water that section? For example (besides brushing) is there a product you could spray on that small section of the rig (eg after PLF) and leave then wipe to assist in removing the grass stain/dirt mark? 13. really - ok thanks, with that short but clear answer I've already decided to get one
  14. how much warmer is full face helmet compared to open face when it's cold out? is there a significant difference? (have an open face at the moment - if there is only a minor difference I'm happy to stick with my open face - kind of hard to imagine without having jumped a full face, like you'd think the cold wind is still going to seep/travel up from the bottom of a full face at the speed we're travelling at anyway) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT

  16. thanks re video, PLUS just noted his trick using a pull-up cord to get the first bag stow band pulled through the first grommet of the bag! (right at end of video) Might have to try this... Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  17. PS. One question here - would the wrapping around the nose come loose here whilst you're doing the first fold of the thicker end? Or perhaps you can still have your knees on the nose whilst you're doing this? (can't remember now) (just concerned about this point as I've had it mentioned to me the tight wrapping around the nose helps avoid a hard opening) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  18. thanks guys - photo's make it look easier than it is :) if anyone has a video of this too I'd be interested Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  19. Have been using the PRO pack technique so far re packing (Zero-P canopies, 230/210/190) Just got a new 189 canopy and did one jump and (of course) had a heck of a time trying to get it in the bag. Someone helped out with a slight variation of the PRO packing but I forgot to ask what it was called. Or perhaps it's just a PRO pack with a slightly different way of getting it into the bag...anyway it is.... * have it on the floor and have just got all the air out * instead of doing the first fold at the nose (skinny end), reach down towards the end (thicker section), put your hand underneath here, and then effectively do the 2nd fold first * then once the 2nd fold is in hand carefully by pulling all canopy in with fingers etc (so it's quite small) then put this section into the bag * once this is in the bag then do the top (skinny end) fold, onto the top of the thicker end which is already in the bag * end up with the canopy in the bags in the same respect but the order in which the folds were done for getting it to the same point were swapped around, to better assist for a bran new zero-p canopy which is all slippery So questions were: Q1 - What's this called Q2 - Any video's on this method (e.g. links to you tube) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT

  21. Any training tips for starting out with booties (boosters) for the first time? I'd be happy to soak up an general info/tips/links or otherwise... * I understand you need to keep your feet pointed to keep the flaps tight? (the only solo jump I've done to date with them on they were flapping like anything and I this I wasn't probably doing this...) * do you need to slightly angle your feet so the wind hits more-so one of the sides? If you're just flying in the stable position for example would you be having your legs/feet in different position? I'm assuming you would need slightly less leg extension, but I guess I'm more talking about the angle of your legs/feet here * when turning with legs is it the same as without booties? or is there a subtle difference in how you'd turn with booties as opposed to without them? (hopefully not a dumb question) * any tips on what to try to achieve in some training solo jumps with them prior to doing 4-ways with them on? Perhaps just (a) stable position and (b) turns is enough... thanks (another in between getting out to the DZ question) Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  22. just wondering if I were to focus on getting a hundred or so jumps up in one hit (take time off) where would be the best (or a good place) to go in the US to get: - cheapest package for 100 jumps (main requirement) I guess it would be nice at the same time that aspects of the DZ included: - 13500' or great jumping - busy enough to have loads going up during the week - ideally larger planes than a Cessna 182 to jump from (but else the 182 is ok if necessary) - doesn't have a history of getting easily weathered out I'm having a look at http://www.jumpticketprices.com/ at the moment, which is good, but it doesn't really cover off some of the things I noted above, so thought someone who jumps a lot around the US might have some good tips. tks Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
  23. In terms of getting ready to do a tracking dive with others any advice/comments/thoughts on: a) what things to practice before hand? (obvious ones would be tracking 90 degrees to jump run, doing turns by tilting shoulders, reading alti I guess?) b) what process to following during a tracking dive? e.g. - what sort of exits to people do on tracking dives (if it maters at all)? - do you group up after exit prior to starting to track together? - seems like there is always a leader on their back? - so just stay behind and above the leader at all times? - how do you maintain same track rate / fall rate - pushing arms up & down behind you? bringing hands right in front if need be to slow down? - breakaway approach - is it stay together until leader waves off and then peel away at different angles? I suppose if there were quite a few people you might have two different breakoff heights? (saw one video where the leader on his back started kicking / waving arms stupidly - wasn't sure if this was for camera or whether this was in fact a breakoff indicator
