What chance would a complete whuffo have of surviving a jump?
DJL replied to jont's topic in The Bonfire
I'd give them a 90% chance of survival. They would probably just pull stuff until something came out. So they have an even chance of main or reserve if they even see the hackey or think it's anything other than decoration. Then, assuming their body position didn't result in an entanglement, they have a canopy above them. If they choose the largest open area around then they'll probably have a bumpy landing even if they theorize that something resembling a flare is good practice. If they don't head to open space then they may land in a tree and at worst probably just break something. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
I'll bet that Dairy Queen did intend the phonetic similarity but I doubt they meant any wrong. As for the root of mulatto, I didn't know or think about it until this post. I can't imagine that a self-respecting educated person would prefer to be called a mule. I also can't imagine that in forming this phrase, especially by the Spanish at that time, that there was any positive connotation. But, this does not mean that it was meant to be derogative. Also, someone fill me in on the Octoroonie thing. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Mike, I'm calling bullshit on this. You're telling me that one man wanted to have sex with this Orca so much that he exerted the man-power of 7 people to get IN there? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
Hey Yuri. Boutros is a jackass. He stiffed my office on payment for designing his office. We let it slide since his portion of the design in that building was less than the legal fees would be. No, it has nothing to do with how well he cuts eyeballs, I just throw in that bit of bashing anytime his name is mentioned. These are my eye doctors and they don't just do lasik but are practicing ophthalmologists. I've been going to them since I was 8 years old. They did my mother's lasik and I'm having mine done with them this winter. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

I'm not responding to anyone in particular, just the belief many seem to hold that it's OK for a packer to do a sloppy job on gear not used for working/team jumps. This is not even in reference to this particular mishap, because I take the side of the packer. The opinion is that people who are too lazy to pack their own gear get what they deserve. The underlying concept is that if you don't pack it yourself then you can't blame another person for a malfunction. That is correct, because errors do occur. But this is not permission for negligence. The only time that I expect more errors is when I ask a packer to trash pack it so I can make a loading call. Otherwise, this a person who usually pulls in more than the DZO. I expect a professionally done product. I don't expect something as good as a reserve, but I do expect better work than if I do it myself. Have standards really gotten this low? Is it really OK that a substandard job could put you on your reserve, or even worse? This direction seems to be coming mostly from jumpers, not packers. Packers who I know and use have higher standards. Ask a packer if it's OK to go sloppy on a fun jumper's gear. They'll either be insulted or will think you're joking. In this instance, if I had looked at the window on the ground and the colored strip were not visible then I would take it back to the packer. If we discovered that the strip had slid a little, then no problem, but they should have seen it before giving it to me. It's staring them in the face. If the PC weren't cocked...I'd take issue with that. I wouldn't feel comfortable with their work and wouldn't use them anymore. They just made an error that could have cost me a lot, luckily it was one that was visible. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

In a year I'll probably have to throw away one of my reserves not because it's old but becaue it's had so many repacks. At my last repack my rigger happened to have an identical reserve of the same year. The owner had kept it in a closet because he quit jumping. The condition was that of one that's brand new. Granted, mine had spent 10 years doing CRW and getting mistreated. But according to my rigger, the difference was the number of repacks. I vote for 6 months. Bloopers section. Or get someone who looks nothing like him to fill in as a stunt double. Copy the ending of someone else's and whenever they say the person's name, dub over it with the correct one. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Because with the extensive array of personality types, skill levels, and goals there are more things to poke fun at. I think his list is funny and lighthearted, and that the good outweighs simply shaking your head and laughing at an 8-video angle freefly. Why? Because then it wouldn't be skydiving without videoing EVERYTHING. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
