Usually you start by releasing the lines and then use a tug to back it down. Or did you mean "lose"? The article is full of gaping holes but if they really did think that we just forgot where a destroyer got parked then they didn't look into it. You have to remember that there have been over 1000 destroyers built and when one is decommissioned there's a pretty long inactive/mothballed period before it gets turned into scrap. The "lost" they're talking about is purely book keeping. It would have been towed somewhere else or sent for salvage and the books not updated. Basically, there was never a lost active duty warship. I think it's a good use of technology to save the cost of police visually tracking a suspect. BUT it should be court sanctioned. Beats me, it was years ago. If I recall, we didn't even see the owner on the previous CRW jump because he was so far below us - but he didn't tell me about the pin until we were on the way up. I think we also primed (slid out) the pin a little bit before exit. I don't think that the assist was even necessary but I was a very new jumper taking bad advice. Priming the pin is all we would've needed to get it off my back. Anyway, nothing went over the tail which only says that we got away with it. Done it from a KA. Was a borrowed rig and was up to do CRW. The rig's owner tells me on the way up that on the last jump he had a loooong delay before building up enough steam to extract the pin - but he didn't lengthen the closing loop between jumps. So we had someone hold onto the PC and bridle at the bottom left corner of the door and I just dropped out. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

I'm definitely not trying to be the tatoo police. I'm really trying to make the point that skydiving has a unique circumstance that the glamour can wane very quickly. Put it this way. There are A LOT of people who came and went after 300 jumps or 4 years. It's all up to you but most of your options are a lot like a freshman buying their class ring. I would say that people should get tats of something after it has become an integral or meaningful part of their life. You can't make a rule about when that is but mine would be between 5 and 10 years in the sport. Note: I don't have any tats.
