  1. The purpose of treating with amyl acetate is to get rid of the "waxy" stuff like chlorophyll. I think what you have is the "bleeched" version of the waxes found in grass, you know the good kind of grass Anyhow, for furute reference don't be too mechanically harsh with the fabric. 3. It goes by the street name of Banana Oil, good stuff It's a solvent found in many parfumes for instance. Here is where to get it: http://sargentwelch.com/product.asp?pn=WLC95033-06_EA&sid=OVERTURE&EID=OV03830 Memento Audere Semper 903

  6. Update. I also sent a sample back (built like the one I sent to Dan) to the braiding factory (E.L. Wood Braiding Co.) Here is the e-mail I got from John P. Haugen: Memento Audere Semper 903
  7. I thought about this ever since I got my suit. We are usually the last ones to get out. I know I am the only WSP at my DZ so I'm always last. I board completely unzipped with the leg wing snapped up and the arm zippers 3/4 up. In case we have to bail out I would go as low as 500' hand on the sliver, poised exit with legs together and bent, arms in, clear and pull. Chances are the pilot won't tell to bail out at 500' but I would not think twice if I had to. I usually don't rig up until 10K when everybody gets up to prepare for final. In case I have to bail out at higher altitudes, let say at or above 1300', I do the same procedure but pull my main. I don't know if this is best course of action but it makes sense to me. 11. Do yourself a favor: when you get the canopy back measure all the outside lines and write the lenght down. Do the same at 50 and 100 jumps and post the results here. Yes, welcome to the woonderful world of Spectra Memento Audere Semper 903
  12. He did not name any sites specifically. How many times have you heard "I flicked my local 320' free-standing last night, fucking awsome!" Memento Audere Semper 903
  13. Gerry is a legit jumper and one of the pioneers in the sport. I don't think this is a setup of any type. As for his intent to post the sites: I just don't know or care! Memento Audere Semper 903
  14. No the Alpha like the Viper and Cobalt comes with Spectra cascaded. I got the specs from Stane, I also calculated it on my own and I was double checking it once the As and Cs were in place. I also modified the line set quite a bit: lengthening the set by 15cm, making the canopy flatter by incrementally increasing the length span-wise, changing the brake setting, and putting a different slider. The lines were fingertraped with the Jump Shack method because I did not want to sew them: you can't do a bartack on them because they are too thin and even a straight stitch looks too big on them, that's how fine they are. I also did not want to damage them. By the way they are much thinner than what Precision and Hyper use. Of course there was some trial and error in the process. The original slider did not want to come all way down during opening. I had to pump the rears. That was due to the increased in line length. So I put a slider from a XF2 99 that is 2" shorter span-wise and 1" longer cord-wise. Then the brake setting was too shallow, now it's 2" deeper. Finally the outboard D lines were 2 cm too long so I shortened them up. Now it's all good! Yes the canopy flies quite differently: more consistent openings, faster flight, much longer recovery arc, slower toggle turns, faster front risers turn with lighter pressure, stronger flare and bottom end and it's more sensitive to harness turns. By the way the reduction in bulk from the Spectra set is 50% above the cascade and 25% below it, so it's quite impressive. The lower control lines are made of Dacron 400. I bet I can make between 500-1000 jumps on this line set, time will tell. Memento Audere Semper 903

  16. 1. PD does not charge 125 bucks to reline a canopy! At least not 125 USD. 2. HMA is even more expensive than Vectran and on a non continuous set you need a bit more line, even if you do it yourself it’s not going to be cheep. 3. You gotta do the math right, you cannot use the same line set for the non-cascaded, it’s my advice to contact Icarus to see if they have the line spec for the continuous set. 4. Said that I am a big fan of HMA. I relined my Alpha with continuous HMA and I love it! Memento Audere Semper 903
  17. I don't think the no-sew fingertrap (Jump Shack method) can be used because the there is only one free end. You can fingertrap it and bartack it. It takes 5 min. Alternatively, you can leave the knot and fingertrap the excess line like it's done on most reserves. The end result it's not too bad. Memento Audere Semper 903
  18. Having raced bikes professionally I see a lot of parallels with super-fast uneducated canopy progressing and squids on bikes they don't have the skills to even ride them at their 50%. It is true that some people might have the right state of mind to buy a 600 sport bike as first bike but they are the vast minority. Riding is a very difficult skill to master and it's hard to master it with a bike that is capable of stuff that should be left for the track and for very skilled riders. Same with learning to swoop on a canopy loaded at 1.8 at 100 jumps. A ninja 250 does not have the "cool" factor of a R6 like a Triathlon 210 does not have the cool factor of a Katana 120. And some must be cool or else...I see it everyday on the street, and read it here as well. Memento Audere Semper 903
  19. I'll be at the DZ from 08/12-14. Please PM if you are in the area. I would like to so some night action... Memento Audere Semper 903
  20. 1. Not all BASE canopies are alike like not all skydiving reserves are alike. 2. PDRs usually have a much swallower angle of incidence than the majority of BASE canopies. 3. PD used to make a BASE canopy for Vertigo called the Dragon. It was a PDR trimmed like a Lightning (much steeper angle of incidence). 4. So usually if you compare a PDR with, let's say, a Mojo of the same size, the most noticeable thing you notice in flight is the reduce glide on the Mojo, a deeper flare window in the Mojo, and faster, more consistent openings on the Mojo. What the PDR does better is the glide but BASE jumpers usually don't care if they are able to land 15' further on a 10 sec canopy ride at the expenses of crappy openings. Memento Audere Semper 903

  25. Wow, that's profound. Students listen up: You should go from a WL of 0.6 with student gear to 1.6 in one step if you want to get into swooping. Memento Audere Semper 903
