Retain more of what you learn jumping.....
JerseyShawn replied to JerseyShawn's topic in Safety and Training
Thanks for the useful suggestions everyone. Doing 4 jumps twice a month seems like it would work out well for the next couple months. -
Retain more of what you learn jumping.....
JerseyShawn replied to JerseyShawn's topic in Safety and Training
So for now I can afford about 8 jumps a month, a bit less than $400 using/renting a student rig, some bucks more for me getting some coaches in there. Out of your own personal experience, would you learn more jumping (say you have only 8 jumps money) over a two day period, then wait a month to jump again? (I know my 30 day currency limit) Or would doing 2 jumps every week prove to be better for learning? (Maybe a jump or coach less due to tolls and petro) No more rentals for me at the end of August, then I plan on camping my DZ for two weekends a month and jumping like a mo fo. Until then, what would you do? -
It seems to be he general concensus amongst Christians (not all, most) that being homosexual is a learned behavior, and that behavior is wrong. So were all born heterosexual in that theory, Christian or not. Were born with the feeling of being attracted to a sex. Coreese was attracted to men and women without any outside influence, just born that way. He took an anatomy class where he learned to be solely a heterosexual. Isn't Coreese's learned behavior wrong, being the learned behavior of attraction to the opposite sex which you were originally attracted to is wrong? (I think coreese got banned so I post the question to anyone)

Hi Skybytch, I will take the advise to stay current. Was actually missing jumping already when I made the decision to wait. Already planned on being at the boogie on Sunday. Hopefully I can find a spot to set up a couple chairs by the landing area and watch peoples landings for the better part of the day.
-
Hey Chuckers, Every landing I ever did was within 60-70 feet in the center of my landing area whether from the north or south. I make sure an instructor watches every landing I do so far. All have said I set up the pattern correctly and gave me permission to try rear riser pattern as well as my half braked landing, ect. I opened high on both of those so there was no traffic because I didn't know where it would put me. Now I know if I ever have to use my rears Im going to go out a bit farther on my rears and to adjust to the best of my abilities to avoid obstacles if I get in a tight spot in my landing area or an off landing. No one is saving my life up there except me. Im better equipped now. I wouldnt of tried it the first time if I was in traffic.

Thanks for the info skybytch, the class sounds like fun!

Just to see how it affected my pattern in case a broken steering line. The 3 previous jumps I did I opened at 9k, last out, to play with my canopy. Stalling with toggles and rears (trying to), turning full 360s watching my alti to see how much I dropped with a toggle turn compared to rear riser turns and such. Ive done my half braked pattern and landing already, crosswind landing, landed on target a few times (within a couple feet). Just trying to know my canopy is why I tried the rears pattern.
-
Yes flying with rears until final turn, then flared with toggles. Sorry of I made it sound like I flared with rears.

Ok, to start Im not going to jump again til August, after my first canopy class (in the wake of canopy incidents), I need to know what my canopy is capable of. Piece of mind for me. Then Im gun ho about jumping again. So hence the questions I cant ask my instructors in my absence of the DZ. Out of my whopping 18 jumps they were all stand up, some walked out of, some I had to run out of (my rear riser pattern and landing, toggles in hand of course). I never fell down. I know I will sometime. Is it frowned upon to PLF on purpose? I can roll out of a fall well from skateboarding and mountain biking relatively unscaved with some bumps and bruises, not afraid to fall. I even set up a zip line in my climbing harness that I can rapell down to the ground with a foward descending motion to practice PLFing, rolled out well with legs and knees together. Just wondering if anyone practiced PLFs under canopy when they were in a calm state so when you're in the "oh shit" moment it comes easier under stress. Also, wondering if anyone explores their outs on foot and practices landing out (having someone follow you land)? I read somewhere on here about new veggitation (spelling?) growing landing in farmland outs, so Im aware of that now. Again, the "oh shit" stress factor of having to land out would be lessened, I feel, if I had done it in a controlled environment once or twice.

Injured on a night jump...Why?
JerseyShawn replied to blue24's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I thought I needed a D license. When I read the D requirements it says two night jumps. B secection says I can! Sorry, I read it a while ago and didn't realize this. This is great! -

Or it can keep the goal oriented in the sport longer working towards their D. When I heard of night jumps I got excited, its now one of my goals. Granted I have to wait 4-5 years til, I can work on the other disciplines Im interested in the meantime until my full moon jumps. How pretty it will be..... Then I will only jump at night because daytime jumps will prove to be lame compared Ill remember what you said about loading it lightly when that night comes, my brains temporal lobes work well. -
Food, Inc. is a good documentary about our food production/consumption in the US. About our farmers that are bullied, harassed, threatened, sued, and shut down by big corporations for the love of the dollar. Also the unsanitary and inhumane way we raise and slaughter our animals. You'll be disgusted and probably change your eating habits. Edit: Didn't read the Inc. part after the food part. Im a bit of a scanner when I read. Not my good, so its a my bad.

Soda helps the cure for juvenile diabetes...
JerseyShawn replied to JerseyShawn's topic in The Bonfire
http://selfishgiving.com/causerants/kfc-doesnt-give-a-cluck-time-with-juvenile-diabetes Buy a couple of extra large sodas and help yourself to a cure for your newly found diagnosis of diabetes! Two in one, its a great deal! What will we think (or not think) of next -
http://www.kayakeast.com/PAGES/tours.htm They have tours all over north Jersey (I think that's where you're at).

At her age and she's never been on a plane, I wouldn't offer her to jump. Maybe offer her a ride in a non jumping plane. Have her sit in front, Im sure the pilot would let her fly it once up (how neat that would be for her). A bit less intense than being an observer watching you jump out and leaving her behind. It would be a great first experience flying for anyone. Maybe land at a different airport with a cafe, eat, talk, fly home. It would be a nice date for you and your neighbor, I think, but what do I know. Rent something big, so she doesn't feel too confined.

Until we can get laws into place to lessen back yard breeding (in it for the money, not for the bettering the breed), puppy mills (disgusting), mandatory spay ands neuter (accidental unnecessary over population), ect. we will continue to have abandoned animals. People need to be screened financially and mentally to be able to own an animal, I think. My breeder of my dog wanted to see bank statements, paycheck stubs of how much I made, asked about my history with animals, even drove 4 hours to where I lived to see where the new pup would be living. Showed me all the heart, DNA, and hip tests of his two dogs (both show from well known breeders). He said he barely makes any money breeding, sometimes just enough to cover the costs of testing. And only does two litters, no more. He likes bettering the breed. Back yard breeding is a huge problem, money rules our species This is why I hope to win the lottery one day. My girl and I would love to open up a huge shelter with staff 24 hours a day to play and care for the animals til they can get properly adopted out, well even take them back if it doesn't work out. Hook the place up so its fun for the dogs and cats. Open up a few pet shops with high quality food and toys and products made in the USA or fair trade. Pay the employees well so they can make a career out of it and have all proceeds go to our shelter and other struggling shelters. Just have to win that damn lottery or come up with a good plan. Then I can focus on shutting down puppy mills (lancaster, pa) and stop backyard breeders. Just a word of caution to everyone, DON'T buy a puppy from a pet store, they come from puppy mills. You'll inherit health problems and spend a lot of money for poor breeding habits.

Exactly. Its the same responsibility as having a human kid. Except people think they can dump them at a shelter when they become an inconvenience or move where they can't have an animal. Well, people do dump human babies in the trash too so its the same

Puppies will bark when they're young. Everything is new to them and sometimes scary. As time goes by the puppy will realize that the owner will come home everyday, the barking will/should lessen and hopefully stop. My dog barked in his crate for about a month when I wasn't home. But I did let the neighbors know the situation and I was aware of it. Your neighbor should train the dog from the start. With my pup I would walk out and hang outside my apartment. My pup would bark and I would only enter back in when he didn't bark anymore. It taught him he can't get what he wants by barking. The barking episodes stopped in a few weeks when he was adjusted to my routine. Some people don't know how to train a dog, its a real commitment to train a dog. I grew up with dogs so I had the upper hand, some people never owned a dog and do no investigating how to care for them. Talk to the neighbor, maybe give them a website how to train the dog. Training os an on going thing. I always teach my dog new things, stimulating his mind. People are amazed how well he listens and knows to do things on his own. I can walk across a busy street and my dog will sit at the corner until I give him the ok to cross. Maybe start a conversation with the neighbor in a concerning way, like ask if the dog is ok because you hear it barking for hours. Let them be aware. Maybe offer to take the dog for a pee and poop when they're not home (if you like dogs). The pup will be more comfortable being new puppies can't yet hold their bowels yet for more than a few hours and need to be taken out every few hours, even through the night you have to take them outside every few hours. In a few months they can hold it longer and longer as time goes. Just give the pup some time

I saw the funeral procession for "Papa", the president of the local 81 in San Francisco. It was about 15 or so minutes of motorcycles riding side by side. That was moving.
-
Today is the funeral for two local fallen firefighters, Vincent Perez and Antony Valerio. http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/2011/06/second-injured-san-francisco-firefighter-still-critical-condition Theyre about to shut down I-280 for the drive to the cemetery. All the overpasses along the way are littered with people waving flags and signs for the SFFD waiting for the funeral procession. I saw a few different ladder companies with their trucks parked on the overpasses with lights on. Growing up in a firehouse this really hit me hard, on the verge of tearing up (I did). The outpouring of community really makes me proud. I laid some flowers the other night walking past the firehouse alongside the other flowers. Antony and Vincent, rest your soles brothers.
