More Gropro footage - be careful out there!
JerseyShawn replied to Rover's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
GoPro line entanglement, paraglider. http://www.nrk.no/sport/veko/1.7694281 Look horribly uncomfortable. I could only imagine at high speeds how that feels. This is why I will never wear one. I can care less about video or pictures of me jumping, Im about impressing myself, not others. But if I ever wanted any vids, Id hire my local DZ video guy/gal. $40 or so bucks not to have possible lines yanking my head, priceless. Edit: fix link -
"Have you lived here your whole life", "Not yet". Haha! Gotta love the older generation, full of wisdom and great stories of our history.

[replyI had said something like holding it in half brakes & PLFing is something he'll have to do for his A, anyway. PLFing isn't needed for your A license. Half braked approach, yes, with a full flare, is needed for your A (Cat F I believe). Sorry, Im a bit of a safety conscious nerd, stemming from growing up in a firehouse and seeing the aftermath firsthand of accidents from people making mistakes. Had some been taught differently, Im sure I've would have a few less pictures of mangled people embedded in my head from an early age. Ill always speak up if I see something wrong or that can possibly go wrong. Some have told me to mind my own business, some have thanked me for looking out. Doesn't sway my mouth opening up either way. Call me a dick or a friend. Im all about taking risk, but assessing the situation, adapting saftey, is what will let me hopefully do it again. Wasn't "piling on the new guy", new guy here too. Just saw something wrong telling another new person to land in half brakes and PLF. I've only been taught to land in half brakes if flying into or on top of a tree. Full flare the rest of the time. Please don't take any offence to my saftey minded attitude, just don't want to see people getting hurt taking inexperienced advise.

PeteJones?, just kidding. No disrespect at all intended, but at 60 jumps the only advise a young jumper should/could give to another youngin' is -Arch -Relax -Breathe -Ask your instructors Its dangerous enough giving the right training and throwing your body to the Earth.

They already have those. They do have a Piloting Canopy Proficiency Card. To work on it and get things signed off you need to complete the advanced canopy course first. Where the hell can I get even a first canopy course let alone the advanced class? Looks like a fun card to work on, too bad Im SOL on finding these canopy course things I heard of
-
They added stuff to the canopy proficiency to get your B license (which I feel should be for your A, IMO). Hadnt heard anything changed about the A license either. What changed?....anyone?

It makes them aware of how serious to take of the sport. Why sugar coat it?

Why do people get offended when someone checks them out?

Years ago I tried to make a girl magically disappear by not saying hi back to her and looking the other way. She followed me into the store, walked up and stood in front of me as I was looking at the drinks and sucker punched me good in the stomach. Says, "The next time I say hi to you you say hi back". We hung out at the bonfires at the beach that night with her friends. I said bye to her later on, she refused to say bye. Burn. -
Purple Perpetrators or The Purple Perps for short.

I've kinda decided that......

Piloting and skydiving aren't the same, but both have awesome qualities to themselves. Piloting now while you can't jump will get you used to being up in the air (if you have any anxiety issues with being up high in a smallish aircraft). Plus for an hour of flight with an instructor is cheaper than a 10 minute skydive (tandem). If I couldn't jump Id be flying again in a heartbeat. Freedom to venture where you want and see what you want to see. -

When I first started jumping I thought most skydivers were old school skaters also. Then people told me they don't skate and the theory behind the shoes for jumping. I rock DVS shoes, grippy, cushioned for landings, good for skateboarding. I added 4mm insoles because of a no wind landing that bruised my heal for a week (tried to slow it down before full flare, stupid me).

Just ask for some lucky crystals, its the newest safety device out there Seriously, just ask about what you don't know, as stupid as your question may seem to you. I've never been met any resistance asking about anything. Have fun!

I check my rental rig myself, then ask two different people for gear checks. Not that hard for me to ask.

Invite your company to your home and let them steal from you as an exchange for you stealing their time and money while surfing the internet at work. Compromise.

Just be safe out there and respect their rules for everyones saftey. You're a said pilot, if someone wondered out while taking off or landing that posed a distraction, that jeopardizes saftey. A needless possible tragedy. I used to pilot aircraft myself. My first solo, yelled my "clear prop", looked around for people, got in and started it up. Not even 10 seconds later a little kid passed the "pilots only" fence almost in front of me. Another aircraft was taxing in to fuel up close by. I killed my prop, jumped out and grabbed that kid. The other pilot killed his at the same time. Lucky he wasn't in a blind spot. Had some mature choice words with the parents. I would have to live with that if it turned out wrong even though it wasn't my fault. Rules are for a reason. Go make some jumps (its a great feeling) and become familiar with what goes on out there. Maybe once they know you're safe they'll let you take pictures. Maybe not, its their DZ. Be safe, have fun flying -

From what I've read about Startskydiving they run a great DZ. The DZ is looking out for the photographers safety. That says a lot to me. I can't wait to have some jumps there. OP, thanks for the great publicity of a saftey conscious dropzone.
