USPA Poll on tunnel time replacing some freefall time for AFFIs
faulk04 replied to dorbie's topic in Instructors
do examiners submit how many people take their course in a year? I don't think tunnel time should be replaced for freefall time. I do think the tunnel is a great place to learn specific aff drills such as spin stops, roll overs, and giving hand signals, but others things can't be learned there. I've done an hour of Aff training in the tunnel and would like to eventually go take the aff course, but I'm having a tough finding a whole week that I can take off of work. -
you will learn a ton with Ari. Excellent coach with a very thorough debrief session. Have fun!

Sony Vegas Pro 12 v. Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12
faulk04 replied to DougH's topic in Photography and Video
we use movie studio and it works just fine, we just had to upgrade to sony vegas in order to use a new program we got called swoopware or tandem vids. If I was you, I would just go movie studio. Save that money :) -

I agree with this. I haven't been jumping for that long but I feel like there is nothing wrong with being able to get a coach rating at 100 jumps. I put in on the evaluators on rather or not that person in his course is able to complete the course in a satisfactory manner. Some people are ready to be a coach at 100 jumps and some aren't, pretty much like everything else in life. (This saying would be true if the minimum requirements were raised). I got my coach rating around 150 jumps and I will say I was challenged during my course and my evaluator had no problem telling people if they should or should not be in the course after the 1st jump. I hate the argument that in order to be a coach, one should jump with a camera to debrief them fully so it needs to be raised to 200 jump min for a coach. Coaching without a camera makes the coach really focus in on the student during the dive in order to give them a proper debrief on the skydive. It is very easy to just use a camera, get down and watch the video to see what they did wrong or right Having the use of a camera is a great tool to have, but it is not needed in my opinion.

New Royal Caribbean Ships promise an onboard Windtunnel

what size reserve do you want to get? You can fit a pilot 168 ZPX in a I4 since it packs about 1 size smaller and it will be just fine. Shouldn't give you trouble packing

another solution is this : http://www.bigairsportz.com/art-slox.php I have it on my rig and like it. I did a slight modification to it and if you are interested I can share that with you as well

Simply not true. There are rigs on the market today that were certificated under C23b ( Mirage is one ) and under C23c ( Infinity is one ). Just to clarify things, JerryBaumchen can you please elaborate on this a little bit? Are some of those standard not as stringent as others? What's the difference in laymen terms? Thanks TSO C23b (issued in 1949) refers to National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 804 for its performance standards and had Standard and Low Speed (under 150 MPH) category parachutes (there is no such category as "High Speed" although the language is quite common). NAS 804 was really a design standard (rather than performance standard) and because of the vagueness of the language regarding structural tests there were a number of parachutes of marginal strength certificated in Standard Category by using "creative testing methods" to pass the structural tests. A number of these canopies wouldn't have a prayer of passing the newer tests under C23c. It has also been reported that a 5,000 lb. shock load can be exceeded with small, very low porosity canopies at under 100 knots with less than 400 lb. suspended weight. TSO C23c (issued 1984) refers to SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) 8015A for the minimum performance standards and has Categories A (130 KIAS at 225 lb.), B (150 KIAS at 254 lb.) and C (175 KIAS at 254 lb.). AS 8015A is a performance standard and as such, a much more relevant test program was implemented. Under C23c, approximately 64 drop tests are required as well as some human factors tests and other items. Other related regulations stipulate quality control system and facility requirements that must be met prior to the issuance of a TSO. For a new company without any existing TSO products, starting from scratch can be a daunting task and can be quite expensive and time consuming. And, as one might expect, the FAA takes a dim view of labeling products as TSO'd without going through all the hoops and this is a clear violation of the FAR's. Despite this, it has actually happened recently in Southern California. TSO C23d was issued June 1, 1994 with SAE 8015b as the performance standard incorporated by reference. C23d allows for certification of an emergency parachute at any selected weight and airspeed combination as long as it exceeds the minimum of 220 lb. at 150 KEAS. The structural overload tests will be conducted at 120% of the maximum certificated operating weight and 120% of the maximum certificated pack opening speed. The minimum structural test will be 264 lb. at 180 KEAS. I took this off a website so please correct it if is wrong

Black . . . . Hardware! I hadn't seen the black hardware before, but I'm not sure I'm sold on it. Does it have any benefits other than looking cool? If anything, I'd say having your metal the same colour as your harness/ risers would make it less likely that you or another person would spot a routing problem. True, it's probably marginal, but I can think of other (more extreme) examples where safety has been compromised for the sake of aesthetics. I have a picture of it on my rig posted a few posts up. It's labeled 2.png and no there isn't any other benefits of it besides looking "cool" but that is what everyone goes for right?

just got my custom infinity in and I love the way it fits and feels. I got almost every option they had for 2819. The black hardware looks amazing and you can design anything you want since they teamed up with liquid sky. They came come with extra wide leg straps and I hear it is very comfortable under canopy (Still wanting to try mine out) I also have a wings and just sold my mirage and I like the way the infinity fits out of all of them uploaded some pictures so you can see the black hardware and a very standard unique design they offer.

I've got 2 night jumps in, and loved them. Do you think the strobe on your ankle might have blinded you on landing any? When I did mine I had my strobe on my helmet. I just wouldn't want to look down and get blinded by a strobe on my feet.

got mine in last week, ready to jump it now

The Z-hills Double Fatal Speculation Thread
faulk04 replied to base283's topic in Safety and Training
will be interesting to see how this can be true... Exactly. If "all the gear worked exactly as it should", then: 1. the AADs activated at ~700 ft if in belly-to-earth orientation, or ~200+ ft higher if on back or head-down, and Does Cypres have the +2xx ft offset built in? For example the vigil will fire at 1100 AGL in in any positions besides belly and a min of 840 on belly to earth (but it thinks it fired at 1100) due the decompression zone -
call whoever you are placing your order with and they should be able to answer all your questions

How do you feel landing downwind in about a 5 mph wind? It is somewhat a comparison to landing a canopy 1 size smaller of the same canopy type

Video - Cutaway followed by hard landing
faulk04 replied to Quagmirian's topic in Safety and Training
From the video description I now have a broken fibula (leg), talus (foot) and an oblique fracture all through my ankle bone. So skydive safe and pay attention while packing. This was my 130th jump. -

spend the other 2 1/2 learning to freefly? Ari is an excellent coach, did 3 hours with him over in orlando and going to try to go to his camp in austin in may

the pilot is actually bigger than the sabre and it is because of the way they measure it. (PD and Aerodyne measure the sizes of the parachutes differently) So a pilot 168 is bigger than a Sabre 170, even though you would think it would be the opposite. We had an aerodyne dealer at our DZ one weekend and I remember him talking about it. Or at least I think this is right, but I might have been dreaming during his talk

I hot wired a switch, so it takes them constantly after I turn on the camera, each jump I take around 150 photos

I use a t3i, and I don't think there is much difference in the 3 and 4, except the price. Have no problems with the 3
