Is there any point in me downsizing further?
Bob_Church replied to Westerly's topic in Safety and Training
I just did exactly that. Upsized both main and reserve. Wendy P. I have a big main. I *LIKE* being in the sky. -
Are the cameramans in danger of extinction?
Bob_Church replied to Cathbern's topic in Photography and Video
Unfortunately I think this is like the question about theaters going digital. Yes, there are serious quality problems with it, but most people in the audience won't know the difference and if they did they don't get to choose anyway. And the theater owner is going with the cheaper option. So I'd say there's a very good chance of this happening. -
The 21st Century Question: Why network everything?

But a lot of stuff that didn't even exist 30 or so years ago is now deemed "essential." I think we as a society needs to take a closer look at all this, especially to find out who is saying that we have to have this stuff. -
Gotta love it when posts contain irrelevant information that serves only to reveal the biases of the poster. Yup, might as well have said "three scary boogeymen". And I'd like to see a link to that story. Google turns up nothing. Did it come from a gun rights site or something? Googling "woman defends her self in home invasion by three" turns up several articles about incidents that may or may not be the same ones.

Thanks for the plug, Bob! (full disclosure: I work at Para Gear) In 1979 I ordered a pair of RW Boots from Para Gear. It was the first skydiving stuff I'd ever ordered and I've never ordered from anyone but Para Gear since.

I see what you mean! [url]http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/west-virginia/favorite-foods-wv/ It's like every meal is at a county fair, but all you can eat. And if you do find a place that isn't All You Can Eat Buffet the portions are so huge you can't imagine anyone finishing them. Until you look around.

Anthony Bourdain, the food guy, is airing an episode in West Virginia. He admits he doesn't understand why some people support Trump and he wants to see why. Which seems like an unusually decent thing to do these days. But I shudder to see his reaction to the food.

I've always had good luck with these. And they're inexpensive so if you go with a different size or chest mount altimeter later you're not out much. http://www.paragear.com/skydiving/10000117/I1171W/ALTIMASTER-III-GALAXY-ALTIMETER-HAND-MOUNT

Now that isn't always true; He sometimes uses VX. And we have no idea what's going on that might pressure him to do this. Are the Chinese coming down on him? Has Gloria Allred threatened to represent the women around him? Personally, I don't see where honorable fits into it or needs to. I wouldn't call the East Berlin leaders honorable but The Wall came down anyway.

The 21st Century Question: Why network everything?

"Well...................Bye." (Sorry, but I could not resist.) One of the few paintings in my collection is from Power (not Powers) Boothe. -
A lot of people's greatest nightmare is that this works out well. I know it's far from a sure thing, but it could happen, especially ending the war. I know it's mostly symbolic but it would be great to see. As for reunification, I just don't see how it could be implemented. I'm not saying it couldn't, just that I can't see it. But maybe the people actually working on it can.

"Well...................Bye." (Sorry, but I could not resist.) Wait, that went right over my head. From "Tombstone"(1993): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVrEwCa8nSA Oh yeh. I can't help but think of him from Deadwood. Remember how when he first shows up he seems like the good guy as opposed to Swearingen. Then things reveal themselves. Man, I miss that show. -

The 21st Century Question: Why network everything?

We’ve had two or three, that I know of, major disasters at OU and in every single case the information was online as a minor convenience, if even that. The worst one, the one that changed everything and got good people fired and our IT people replaced with suits working for some outfit from out of town was a graduate student showing off to what has been confirmed, but only on the grapevine level, a young female student worker. In the Alumni department they had a computer where they entered the personal information of every person who donated to Ohio University. That, by the way, was the prime goal of our University President at the time, he fully admitted before all this that donation raising was his main duty. This information included name address and other personal stuff and the University will neither confirm nor deny that it had their credit card information. Although for some reason OU bought a one year subscription to one of the credit watch places for each person in there and told them to change their credit cards. The young female student worker’s job was to take the information on new donors or donors giving again and walk over to that desk and enter it. And if anyone sent a request for certain information and it was legit enough to pass on to her she’d, again, walk all the way across the room and get that info. The grad student showed her how unnecessary all this walking was. The university had just been networked, this was all new terrain to most but he plugged an ethernet cable into the computer, configured it to be online than showed her how she could do all this from her own desk, why walk clear across the room? And he could even show her how to do it from home, nudge nudge wink wink. We know she didn’t take him up on the former and nobody believes she went for the second option either. Accessing the computer continued to be done by walking over to it. When these two graduated it left nobody on campus who had ever even known the computer was networked. Until the FBI contacted IT and informed them that hackers had sucked every bit of information off of it. President McDavis now had to send a letter to every person who had donated to the University saying “I would like to thank you again for your donations. It’s only with your generous help that we can educate our young people to become valuable citizens and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. We all are. Oh, and by the way…..” Power Boothe liked to say that every time they came out with new technology the proponents would claim that it would revolutionize education. Radio would replace teachers. or Vinyl LPs, then TVs. But unfortunately the computer people have much much better salesmen than their predecessors. PS no, not Powers, Power https://www.powerboothe.com -

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/school-district-pays-10000-bitcoin-ransom-after-cyberattack-massachusetts/ "A Massachusetts school district was waiting Friday for its computer system to be "unlocked" after it paid a $10,000 bitcoin ransom to hackers following a cyberattack on its system. And despite the nefarious nature of the school system's lockdown, there is no criminal investigation into the matter because solving this crime is "impossible," said Interim Leominster Police Chief Michael Goldman.” Are we ever going to reach the point where the first response will be “why the hell was the information online? Why couldn’t it be on a LAN with no external link?" This is getting silly. In a very dangerous way. -
I saw the Berlin Wall go up and saw it come down. (On tv in both cases, but hey). I'm not old enough to have seen the Korea division but it would be nice to see reunification or at least the end of the Korean War. After seeing the Soviet Union finally crumble it seems like anything is possible.

Ooooh, that makes sense.

Jerry Waters, retired skydiver, part time newspaper and radio reporter and self-professed full time world's biggest asshole, was walking around Charleston Wv one night and realized that He Was It. There had been a series of robberies where one guy would come up to you and talk, asking for a light or directions or something, while the other would come up from behind and you'd wake up in the hospital nearly dead and your valuables all gone. This piece of shit was running a line while he could see the other guy move from the alley to get behind him. Jerry didn't say a word, he just lifted his shirt, exposing is perfectly legal pistol and the one talking to him actually excused himself then left. They got someone else that night, it was in the paper, and they were caught in another week or so. But as for Jerry's actions there was never any report or record made. It just happened.

"The owner goes over and asks them to leave, pointing to a sign that says "owner reserves the right to refuse service." In his mind, that's just what owners do - listen to their customers. " That's what I was after, thanks. The next time I'm at a certain airport and this subject comes up I'll have some ammo. These guys haven't calmed down since Obama was elected President. And I won't even get into what they say about Chicago.

Why would a New York bar care about Redskins versus Cowboys?
-
Wait, you really think that would happen? In say 2015 someone wearing a CHANGE shirt or some other Obama saying would be asked to leave a bar? In New York. I know it's a big country with lots of different rules, that's why I keep asking about New York. Edit: I'm not really interested in the specific politics of it. I've read in several places that the old attitude of an owner deciding who can come into their business or not is no longer valid in New York City. It's become sort of a rallying cry for some groups. I'm wondering if there's any truth to that or not. Or is it just more alt-right bullshit like this guy's story turned out to be?
-
I do not agree with the judge on that one at all. Can't deny service because someone thinks differently than you do. On the subject of tossing people for wearing a message the bar manager disagrees with. It seems like something that would be way to touchy to get into these days. What if a white truck driver comes in and gets kicked out for a MAGA hat, but then a gay black man comes in wearing one? After all, we're talking New York City, where anything can happen. Then the white guy would have an argument that there was a racial aspect to it, and it's illegal discrimination. The same as if a Muslim was booted and a white guy was permitted to wear, say, a turban. That's what I'm saying. Would a bar owner really risk those kinds of lawsuits and maybe worse, social media attacks by reacting to something like this? We're not talking obscenities, Nazi or Nambla t-shirts. This is a political message that some people agree with and some don't. Could a person be kicked out of a New York City bar for wearing an Obama hat when he was still President?

I do not agree with the judge on that one at all. Can't deny service because someone thinks differently than you do. He didn't. He denied service because he was wearing a "MAGA" hat. He was told to remove the hat or leave. That hat expresses a political stance. One than many find 'deplorable.' Would you feel the same way about a place denying service to someone wearing, say, a Swastika shirt? (obviously, if the Nazi removed the shirt, he might no longer have a shirt on, so would fall under the 'no shirt' rule). That's a bit of a stretch. People wearing MAGA shirts didn't (YET, lol) incinerate several million people. Anyway, sounds like this guy had a shit lawyer and tried to plead it on the grounds of a religious belief leaving the judge no choice but to deny him because there were not any religious belief at hand. He states that this was no more than a petty slight. The bar also denied that they'd kicked him out and produced the receipt with tip from his visit. But anyway....nice try, Fox News. It would be interesting to know if this happens in New York bars much or not. That is, actually happens. For instance, do people get kicked out for wearing the wrong team's T-shirt?
