  1. "I've seen things, you people wouldn't believe." I've seen night stacks slipping between the clouds over black West Virginia forests I've felt the gentle pat on my chest of 30,000 peoples' applause as I turned on final at a demo. I've seen truck loads of beer disappear, like piss in the rain
  2. Just a couple of suggestions here, but I'm not an instructor so double check me on this. You might want to open a little high, check with the load master and everyone first and make sure it's ok, but if it is open a little high and practice your flares at altitude. A lot. This way you can try different things. like being careful to keep your elbows against your side, that sort of thing. Also, there's a huge difference in how different canopies flare and if I remember correctly some of the big student canopies can take much more muscle to flare than even a sensible off student canopy.
  3. Want to make that a bet? I guess one out of four ain't bad. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obama-medal-of-freedom-weinstein-clinton-cosby-weiner/ I was trying to figure out if David was being a weasel by saying that those particular photos were fake, but that the people had gotten the awards. Here's a good source though. And it was only Bill Clinton of those four that got the award. https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/node/349666
  4. Shit. This just isn't right. • Alexander Local School District 1 percent income-tax levy Yes: 1, 259 votes, 49.18 percent No: 1,301 votes, 50.82 percent. The levy also failed in Meigs County, which is partly in the Alexander district (188 yes to 205 no). It failed in Vinton County as well, with 8 in favor and 9 against.
  5. "In doing a lot of reading on the topic, it seems that since people like us cannot get rid of the acetaldehyde as quickly as average people." Reading that always makes me feel like a replicant.
  6. The scumbag just conceded: https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/08/politics/polls-close-west-virginia-indiana/index.html That really surprises me. He never struck me as being smart or decent enough to quit. Maybe with his background he thinks he's got a better shot at Governor and I could actually see him winning that.
  7. Well, I'll be damned; I just finally figured out a couple years ago that I am in the same situation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction For me, it came on before I was even 20yo. AFAIK, both my parents came from Swiss/German background. Since neither of them drank, (for religious reasons), I have no idea which of them I inherited it from. In doing a lot of reading on the topic, it seems that since people like us cannot get rid of the acetaldehyde as quickly as average people, we are also much more likely to suffer the carcinogenic effects of it. So it is stupid to even try to drink at all. I first noticed it in my late 20s, if I "drank wrong" that is on an empty stomach or something I'd get a nasty rash on my arms and a headache. By my early 40s it was just out of the question.I'd go six weeks and think it wouldn't be so bad and buy a six pack, and deeply regret it. I can be a slow learner when I want to be. I can remember my last drink. It was late 80s and we were at the beach in a nice condo and I made our traditional first night there huge meal, and we had a fairly expensive bottle of wine. I had half a glass of wine and ended up in bed with ice on my head and a couple of serious pain killers (I had them left over from some kidney stones) and my head feeling like it would explode. That was it. Me and two of my brothers take after my Mom and we all three got it. My other three brothers are free to drink themselves to death like my old man did.
  8. I can't drink, it's a strange health thing that runs in my family and comes on in our 30s. It's like the blush I've heard about in some Japanese people. But I miss it.
  9. Remember that barrel of laughs mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford? Well, he may be gone but he's got a big brother and it seems he has his own set of bad habits. Like hiring actors to wear his t-shirts and pretend to be supporters. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2018/05/08/doug-ford-campaign-confirms-actors-were-hired-to-play-the-part-of-pc-supporters-at-mondays-debate-rally.html
  10. I'll tell you though, I DO NOT miss the incessant Great Pee Debate.
  11. I have to wonder what their crops are looking like.
  12. It looks like you left just as I got started. Good to hear from you.
  13. We're off the to the polls for the third attempt to get a school levy passed. Gwyn is optimistic but I'm not. People are just too good at coming up with excuses. And speaking of excuses I think I've now seen the most twisted excuse for voting against a school levy that I've ever seen. According to this guy we should vote it down for the sake of the children. "“School funding in Ohio has been found to be unconstitutional. Supporting any school levies will just continue the same unconstitutional school funding system we have now. This needs to stop and be fixed at the state level and not via local levies so we in Athens County, the poorest county in the state, get the same educational opportunities and money for schools that other parts of the state get. Every child deserves equity in education.”" https://www.athensnews.com/opinion/athens_voice/athens-voice/article_b4b96472-4e0f-11e8-9231-03628354ea20.html
  14. But there's no real comparison to Korea is there? One of the big reasons East Germany and the Wall fell was that the people learned what life in the West was like and wanted it. North Korea and South Korea have gone very different ways since the partitioning. Germany's reunification came from the people standing up and demanding it. I don't see anything remotely like that in North Korea. Exactly. The way things are in North Korea is directly attributed to exactly how Kim Jong Un wants it. For anyone to suggest otherwise will either be killed by: Anti Aircraft fire, pack of dogs, or burned alive, or whatever other methods we haven't heard about. The alternative is hard labor at the largest concentration camp in the world today. The people in North Korea have been raised since birth to always honor the Kim dynasty. It's like nothing else we've seen in this fucked up world. You cannot compare this to Germany or Vietnam. There is no comparison. Sorry. It would take a generation to change the way the North Koreans view the world and only after regime change, I.E. KJU and his family and close aides are removed from power to begin with. And everything I've heard and read about NK looks as though they succeeded in the place where the Soviets finally dropped the ball. They've kept their people in the dark. "If you think it's bad here, imagine those poor people in South Korea or America right now!" "Yes, did you see that Rodman? And he's one of the successful ones, imagine what the working class looks like"
  15. Personally I think you'd have to be possessed to do this, so maybe it's apt.
  16. Mentioning Pelosi made me wonder about something. Has the US ever had an 80 year old President. No, I didn't pay attention during history class. I thought maybe Reagan but I think he was still barely 79. And that was leaving. Pelosi would turn 80 a few months after taking office in 2020, provided of course a multi-millionaire Liberal from San Francisco would have a shot at it.
  17. How hard is it to remove identification numbers from a gun?
  18. That's a good question. I wonder if he made her wear really comfortable shoes and flannel shirts when his wife was around.

  20. Well done. I look forward to reading about your second year of success. And no doubt that you will make it.
  21. Here's the thing about the North Koreans... The populace have been brainwashed by the regime. They have been fed lies about the world and conditioned to believe their living standards are good. Internet access to the outside is strictly forbidden as are imported contraband (DVDs, VHS tapes, media, etc) and those who are caught face harsh punishment. Frankly, I don't see why Kim Jong Un would want reunification if he can't maintain the propaganda he's fed to his people. How often does reunification happen when the two populations are this different? There was Vietnam of course, which I hate to even think about, but other than that? And especially with it being a negotiated reunification, no withdrawing army and last helicopter out but both sides getting together and cutting that big ribbon. I can't even imagine had NK and SK would work it out. I'm not saying they won't, just that I can't see how. It would be very interesting.
  22. This is especially true when having a law means setting up a large data collection center that hires your constituents to run it.
  23. I'll add Biden and Pelosi to that list although I know Pelosi isn't interested. I've heard Pelosi mentioned but the discussion always ends with "but....." I think we're due for another governor.
  24. Even this Canadian knows that is not how your US system works. How did you ever dream this scenario up? Let me break this to you gently. Turing machines have no I/O
  25. You may not be able to make stupidity illegal but it is possible to regulate certain expressions of it. Such as, as a sport, wading along rivers and putting your hands into holes under the water that you can't see into in the hopes of catching a catfish. WV DNR creates regulations for catfish noodling Starting in 2019, hand-fishing for catfish becomes legal in the Mountain State. A recent vote by members of the state Natural Resources Commission established a season for the practice and set up limits and regulations for it. The action came in response to Mountain State residents’ desire to join the legions of people in the South and Midwest who enjoy reaching into riverbank cavities, sticking their hands into the mouths of big catfish, and wrestling the fish out of their holes. Division of Natural Resources officials proposed the regulations, and the commissioners — seven political appointees who establish season dates and bag limits — OK’d them. The rules, as approved, are pretty straightforward. The noodling season will begin each year on June 15 and will end on Aug. 31. This puts it at a time of year when water levels are relatively low and catfish cavities are easier to reach. The summertime season also ensures that noodlers, who often wade in neck-deep to reach prime spots, won’t fall victim to hypothermia because the water is too cold. Fishing will be restricted to daylight hours only, for two reasons: One, having people stumbling around in the water at night isn’t the safest thing in the world; and two, law enforcement officers can police the activity more easily. Hand-fishing, as practiced in West Virginia, will be about as simple as it gets. Participants won’t be able to use bait or fish attractors to entice the fish out of their holes. They also won’t be allowed to use gaffs or spears to latch onto their quarry. Diving underwater to noodle will be allowed, but the use of snorkels, SCUBA gear or any other artificial breathing apparatus will not. When noodling, participants are to seek fish only in naturally occurring cavities and naturally occurring habitat. Grabbing fish out of artificial cavities or nest boxes will be illegal. It will also be illegal for participants to create artificial cavities or nest boxes for future use. For the most part, hand-fishing will be allowed only on the state’s rivers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lakes, Stonecoal Lake, Hawks Nest Lake, Mt. Storm Lake and Cheat Lake. Small state-managed impoundments will be off-limits because DNR officials are trying to increase catfish populations there. The daily creel limit for noodling will be four fish, which will also count as part of a hook-and-line angler’s daily limit. The limit of four is an aggregate total that would include all catfish species. Only two fish in any daily limit can be blue catfish, and only one fish may measure more than 35 inches in length. If the body of water being fished has more restrictive limits, those will be in effect. https://www.wvgazettemail.com/outdoors/hunting_and_fishing/wv-dnr-creates-regulations-for-catfish-noodling/article_21bd8bd4-fc11-5adf-9461-4452a2c19a95.html
