US military rigger found guilty of cutting straps
Bob_Church replied to freeflyfree's topic in The Bonfire
Absolutely. Reduction in grade and a bad conduct discharge. Oh boy, they really laid down the law. Is this something that someone in that area of the service would think they'd probably get away with? Or was this guy just way too stupid to be carrying a knife, let alone anywhere near an aircraft? -
I'm surprised she made it this long; from what I understood, she was bat shit crazy. RIP. Well, I mean, Superman lost his grip on her and she went into freefall. I'm sure that's enough to make anyone bat shit crazy. Her mental issues were well documented. Hope she's found peace. Way back, I'm talking about a savage and barbaric time before HBO, let alone VCRs and Video Disks, I would walk uptown to the theater because I was in the mood to see a movie. I'd find out what it was as I bought my ticket. One weekend evening it was "Quackser Fortune has a Cousin in the Bronx." which turned to be a pleasant enough movie, but it was Saturday night in a college town so the crowd was a bit boisterous, if you know what I mean. I was watching a film with a bunch of drunken college kids and I'd had a few myself. It was a good time. Now, there must have been an article or something somewhere promising that this new young actress was going to get topless. These guys were definitely expecting it and towards the end of the movie started making angry and disappointed little remarks. Then, cut to a very quiet scene in a cluttered room. A very cluttered room and in the center sitting sideways was a high backed chair, the sort you can sort of disappear into. The camera pans to the right. It took everyone a good ten seconds to realize that she was sitting there with her breasts exposed. One guy yelled, loud, in a very surprised voice "hey, there it is!" and then the whole theater was drowned in laughter.

I was jumping a seriously jumped out ancient Wonderhog 2 that hung on me like a prostitute's nighty. As well as almost needing to duct tape it on it would beat me black and blue on every jump. I went straight from that to a new, custom made, Quasar II and just couldn't believe the difference. I knew it would be better of course, but not how much better. Comfortable opening and the chest straps form a sort of harness. Not that I'd try it but I suspect you could jump this rig without a chest strap and be ok. Edit: and no, that is not a recommendation! Always fasten your chest strap then double check and check again just before exit. Seriously, I was just making a point.

Really interesting question, and the 24hr cyber bullying you're referring to is a HUGE problem at the moment. Give up the internet? No - it's not worth that. I genuinely believe the ability to share information freely is one of the paths to making us great as a species. Give up social media though? Absolutely. In a heartbeat. And there's the rub - does this type of usage censorship come from the parents, or from a central authority? Is it a combination of both? Like any incredibly powerful tool, the internet can be abused and it will take training and education to teach people how to use it properly. Our generation has had to learn on the fly about alternate personas, identity theft, cyber bullying and a myriad of other things that are either a result of or enabled by this incredible invention, but our kids shouldn't have to. I'm already thinking about how I'll teach my son to use the internet but he'll make mistakes learning - that's only to be expected. He'll post something he shouldn't and he'll get teased for it, or look at something that disturbs him. That's my job as a parent - to ameliorate those events. The big difference between the internet and gun education is that at least the internet is only words. It's unlikely that my boy will be able to kill a bunch of his classmates if he's angry by typing a nasty message on facebook in a one off situation. No, but what if he's one of the growing number who kills himself because of the abuse? Or cuts or huffs or starves or any of the other ways a kid deals with more than he can handle. This isn't something new, it's just been blown way up and extended in ways we never dreamed. The worry isn't that he kill people with a nasty note but that it alls gets to be too much and, well, we keep seeing what happens then. Think of the nasty situations back in school. Now imagine these same interactions day and night and without even the filter of a teacher or the filter of having to look the person you're slagging off in the eye which might finally make you start thinking that they're a person with feelings. I honestly don't know how more of them haven't snapped. But then, it's not over yet. Is there any way to help them?

I know I posted this earlier but it just seemed to slip by and I'd really like to discuss it. I don't think this is some bizarre over the top theory, I think it has merit and I wonder what, if anything people would be willing to do about it. ====once more, into the breech====== Speaking of giving things up, that's one thing when it's assumed that getting rid of all guns, whether possible or not, is the solution but what if there's a bigger problem? What's changed? Well, remember all those sci-fi stories where everyone develops telepathy and soon after everyone has killed each other? We've done a pretty good job of at least emulating ESP. Think back to being a high school student and imagine all that snark and bullying and belittling but with no filters and 24/7. And remember, it only takes one outsider snapping from it to give us another mass death. So, what if the question becomes "would you give up social media to save the children's lives? What if we find out that it's the hatred they wade through from others their age that triggers this, and that when we've rounded up all the guns and melted them down they just go online and learn how to build bombs and sarin? Are we willing to give up the internet if it will save those children?

What was your safest parachute?
Bob_Church replied to Bob_Church's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
In another thread someone mentioned only needing whichever canopy was safest and it got me curious about when canopy development would have ground to a halt if we had stopped there. I really wasn't trying to dump on small canopies. -
It IS that big a deal. Kids are kids. They're not adults. They deserve to have an environment that is safe to be kids in without the need for specialized security to account for adults wanting to play with guns. Here's the thing - where I went to school there was NO security. None. And that's true in just about every country that doesn't have multiple shootings in schools every week. So sure, you could lock the schools down, treat them like a prison and frisk everyone coming and going and there would probably be less events like this - But no parent in the world would want that. By adding security that you want you're treating a symptom, not the root cause. Let me ask you something - would you trade your child's life for your right to own firearms? A straight yes or no answer please. Speaking of giving things up, that's one thing when it's assumed that getting rid of all guns, whether possible or not, is the solution but what if there's a bigger problem? What's changed? But this article seemed to be mostly about the actual numbers of viewers. All of these other arguments seem mute since we can see that very very few people even saw these. That's the point they were trying to make but it seems to have been completely overlooked. If you pay a local TV station to run ads for you DZ then none of the advertising skills in the world will help if they either forgot to run them or ran them when everyone was out doing something else and never saw them.

I have a friend in, I think Sheffield, if it's outside of London I have trouble remembering) and he posted in disgust the way the wedding trumps everything. No ill will towards the Royal Couple, just the way the news is being prioritized. I don't share his surprise.

BillyVance's "You Can't Make This Up" News Stories Thread

Well, now we know why she was mad: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/gykg7j/we-finally-know-why-the-angry-tim-hortons-pooper-pooped I'll wager she's a well known local who is always in there trying to shoot up in their bathroom and begs money from the customers. And the first time she leaves a dirty needle on the floor behind the trash or commode and some child finds it first the manager finds out about it on the news, and the word goes out to stay away from that place. It happens about once a month in Charlston Wv. -
Something you might want to try one some solo practice jumps is to line up on something straight, a highway or something, go into a gentle track, at least at first, and do all of your steering with your knees. It's way to easy to forget about using your knees in RW. Sounds interesting. Any special thoughts about the knees position? Just try pulling one then the other forward a bit to act as rudders for turning. Then try using both of them to slow down. This can be especially helpful when approaching a formation and you don't want to actually flare but need to slow down and stop.

Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?
Bob_Church replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
"When I said "People in charge", I meant SecState Pompeo, Trump and all of their spokes-critters. Along with their ROK counterparts. " I know but I was talking about a different aspect of it all. If you're the President and Kim says "Ok, I was wrong, I want to talk and bring Peace to the area" how would you handle it? I think this is a case where you just have to suck it up and know that yes, he'll probably use it to make you look bad, but remember how bad you'd look and feel if you didn't at least try. Some people are just good at putting people in these positions. -

One of the dangers of telling a junkie that they can't use your bathroom because you're tired of them shooting up and even overdosing in there (and you have to clean up the mess) is that they're not only in as bad a mood as humans usually get but once an opioid starts wearing off your bowels loosen up. -
Unconcious or uncontrolled reserve landing
Bob_Church replied to gowlerk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yep. Good stuff too. I have a ballistic helmet with their upgrade kit. I was actually looking at their site yesterday to see what they offered that might work with my Bonehead Aero. I am going to contact them to see if I can send them the liner and have them cut foam panels in various thickness to the same template. Some people may take this as sarcasm but it's not, honest. Have you looked at Pro-Tec helmets? I'm not actually saying to get one, I don't know because I haven't seen any good evaluations of them and how well they work. They're considered novice, or maybe even nerd helmets. I wore one for years and lost it out the door of a 172 somewhere over West Virginia in the 80s, but if I were to go back to wearing a helmet I'd more than likely get one, or maybe get really hip and with it and get one of their half-shells. -

No, on the contrary, I'm saying that without jobs you can't work. If that's changed over the last two years then great. And maybe, just maybe, it's why places like Ferguson haven't been in the news lately. But despite my being cautiously optimistic it's hard to imagine the manufacturing industry to spring back that quickly. But I won't complain. -

Don't they do this every year when the joint military exercises happen? NK threaten to pull out of some sort of talks in order to get concessions to 'come back to the table'. It's the opening gambit for their negotiating strategy, every time. I wonder if a very angry Kim is running around yelling "who sent out that prepackaged condemnation without my orders? " And everyone else is wondering which of them will get the axe. Literally. -
Phrasing please! From an article at CBS I just read. "According to the offense report, Glover and his wife were having an altercation after the third round of The Players Championship, where Glover shot 78" Fortunately, she was yelling at him over his golf score, not number of dead bodies.

" But, they also are trying to induce you to stop working to open up a position for a younger worker. " I was happy to help them out there.

Just keep in mind that if you continue to work or otherwise generate income while collecting SS, (even after full retirement age) a significant percentage of your SS distribution will be added to your taxable income. Of course, it depends on the amount of your income. The more you make, the higher the percentage of your SS income that will be taxable. Yes, up to half, which is what they're doing to me. I don't work now, but pretty much all income counts, even other retirement programs, which is definitely something to keep in mind when the time approaches.

Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?
Bob_Church replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
If it works there, then maybe Ferguson Missouri. There's another factor that used to really work well but few people seem to even remember it anymore since we sold out the middle class and their manufacturing jobs. "I'd love to but I have to get up and go to work in the morning." Heh, yeah but that was back when people actually cared about work. Yeh but when I was growing up a big reason for finishing school and not getting into too much trouble was that it could really mess things up when I went to get my good job and home. That's not such a good sell these days. I think we've pretty much shot those goals in the ass for the upcoming generations. -
