Neck Injuries and the Physics of Hard Openings?
PiLFy replied to UpstateBonehead's topic in Skydivers with Disabilities
It always baffles me when a bright, rational jumper argues that holding your head in any position other than neutral will increase the chances of NOT causing an injury . Our cervical vertebrae are best able to withstand axial loading while in the neutral position. Simply looking at the architecture should make this apparent. Tilt the head in any direction, & you'll increase pressure on one side of the disks, decreasing it on the others. -
http://www.apf.asn.au/Members/Information/Exit-Seperation/default.aspx Thanks again for this link. There's a lot to read, but I'm finding pearls of good information there. It's filling in gaps in my understanding of this. Enough to warrant a sticky, IMHO.

Thank You. I'll take a look at it.

Thank You for the lengthy explanation, Chuck. I understand it a bit better, now. It looks like I need to spend some more time on understanding this dynamic. Jumping in relatively the same conditions most of the time, I've been getting away without spending too much time thinking about this.
-
I'm not sure I follow that, Chuck. Please elaborate for us Newbies?

I insured my cars, motorcycles, & apartments w/State Farm for 32 years straight. I never put in a single claim, & always paid my premiums. Yet, I didn't get one renewal notice in the mail, & my car's policy lapsed for about five weeks. They refused to maintain my multi-year, accident-free discounts, & insisted on writing me as a brand new customer. WTF?!?! It turned out that their discounted rate wasn't nearly enough to be competitive, anymore. I told them to go to Hell, & found better policies w/a different carrier, at lower prices. FU2, State Farm.

Need advice quickly: sharp pain in ear and now it feels muffled
PiLFy replied to Kirkk0herra's topic in Safety and Training
FWIW, I have troublesome eustacian tubes that don't always equalize well. I once had vapor lock on one side that lasted for about three days. Drove me nuts. I got a script for Astelin from my ENT. The nasal med drips slowly into the back of your throat when lying down. It dripped onto the eustacian tube opening, & cleared it. YMMV. Good Luck. -
Sorry friend, but a rickity, rattling, stamped-steel SKS isn't anywhere near being in the same league.

Didn't miss your point (?). You've already answered that you want one.

L&B offers a visual port for their Optima audible. L&B has an excellent rep in the industry for quality & customer service. Why would you wanna roll the dice w/an unknown??

"Fortunately, replicas are now being made in Germany and Texas." I wasn't aware of that. I've always wanted one, too. $8K for a Rifle, though?? Sorry. That's too rich for my blood. I will look them up, though. Thanks.

"During the invasion of Crete (1941) many German paratroopers died before they could grab their long guns." Many German paratroopers died because they lacked the firepower to suppress opposition. The Greeks tore them up w/machineguns & rifles while the Germans were pinned down w/only their sidearms. A lot of Men died trying to get to their long guns. The FG42 was designed to give them MG42-ish firepower when they first landed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISKnl1OnI9Y&feature=related Still look like it kicks pretty good. Just as well you don't want one. I recall seeing one sell for $85,000 not too long ago.

Consistent Hard Openings on Brand New PD Pulse
PiLFy replied to BobxMarley's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've only jumped four different models of canopy in my brief time in the sport. I'm older, & have back & neck issues. I appreciate soft, drama-free openings. The Pulse was hands down, the softest, easiest-opening canopy of the bunch. When I eventually buy a brand new setup, it will include a Pulse. -
Consistent Hard Openings on Brand New PD Pulse
PiLFy replied to BobxMarley's topic in Gear and Rigging
Ah, I forgot about that one. He's had five hard openings on that new canopy. That has had to do some damage to, & adversely affected the longevity of the expen$ive new canopy, right? I think I'd be wanting a properly made replacement canopy from PD. Thoughts? -
Consistent Hard Openings on Brand New PD Pulse
PiLFy replied to BobxMarley's topic in Gear and Rigging
Why would he need a bigger slider? The Pulse is well known for sweet openings, for all sorts of body types. @1.03 under a 190, He's hardly out of the normal range. I see you've got en times my jump numbers. It's an honest question. My theory? PD's excellent, but not infallible. Someone might've sent it out, out of trim or not sewn correctly. -
Consistent Hard Openings on Brand New PD Pulse
PiLFy replied to BobxMarley's topic in Gear and Rigging
Something is clearly wrong. The Pulse is the sweetest, softest opening canopy I've ever jumped. Get ahold of Rusty @PD. -
I was thinking you used something more like Gargoyles, w/lens inserts. I sent a query to your link. I doubt they can properly make a pair in my strength. It'd be great, as my contacts have been giving me a lot of trouble, lately. Thanks for the link. It might save me some money & hassle.

Snowboarding goggles VS skydiving goggles
PiLFy replied to ronixx's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ski goggles are hot N heavy in the summer. Gonna be cramped w/that Benny, too. A pair of Flex-Z goggles are only about $16, & don't block any of your vision: http://www.chutingstar.com/skydive/flex-z-goggles-3361 Why re-invent the wheel? -
"I am not sure on the parameters that those goggles works but this set up is like having a thin lens inside the goggle and it works like a charm." I'm familiar w/your setup. When I used to do a lot of shooting. I wanted to get a pair of Gargoyles. Same thing as you describe. The prescription inserts can only correct to -6.5, max. Not even close to my prescription... Glad they're working for you.
-
FYI: goggles can only correct up tp about -6.5 diopters. If your vision is any worse than that, like mine is? You're SOL...
-
I've been using these w/o any problems. They're very secure. http://www.chutingstar.com/skydive/flex-z-goggles-3346
