  1. That has my interest piqued. Gardner
  2. I'd be interested in hearing what kinda reactions you get when you do that to your next few victims. Gardner
  3. I've made more decisions based on the outcome of a cointoss than I really care to detail. It's decisive, though. ...and sometimes takes some willpower to stick to the decisions. Definitely one should never go against the coin in life or death decisions. Also gotta be careful what you ask the coin... kinda like being careful what you wish for. Gardner
  4. LMFAO The War of Northern Aggression is also commonly referred to as "The Recent Unpleasantness" Good Stuff Gardner (everybody's favorite redneck) edited to add: With the deepest respect to Mr. Foxworthy, this is a look at the other side. ----------------------------------------------- You Might Be a Yankee If . . . The sound of Fran Drescher's voice doesn't bother you. You've watched the movie Deliverance and you're afraid to go on a camping trip. Ever. For breakfast, you'd rather have potatoes than grits. You can name at least four hockey teams. You don't know what a moon pie is. You've never eaten okra. You wonder why people in restaurants don't talk as loud as you do. You have never planned your summer vacation around a gun & knife show. You don't have any problems correctly pronouncing "Worcestershire sauce". You've never had grain alcohol. You are familiar with all the rules to Lacrosse. You have no idea what a polecat is. Whenever someone tells an off-color joke about farm animals, it goes over your head. You've never had bangs. You don't see anything wrong with putting a sweater on a poodle. You'd rather vacation at Martha's Vineyard than Six Flags. You don't have at least one can of WD-40 somewhere around the house. You would rather have your son become a lawyer than grow up to get his own TV fishing show. You refer to two or more people as "you guys" instead of "y'all". You think more money should go to important scientific research at our university than to pay the salary of the head football coach. You prefer a bagel over a donut. You don't know anyone with two first names (i.e. Joe Bob, Billy Bob,Kay Bob, Bob Bob, Sara Jane) You get freaked out when strangers in public talk to you. None of your fur coats are made with real fur. You don't know what a Piggly-Wiggly is. You think NASCAR stands for the North American Society for . . . (something) You eat fried chicken with a knife and fork. Your idea of a perfect meal is "Lahbsta and Clam Chawdah". You use the horn in your car more than once or twice a year. Everything you know about the Civil War you learned watching TV. You don't "reckon". You're not "fixin" to do anything.

    Analyze This . . .

I can't quite parse whether this was intended to be insulting to a dead jumper, just reads as if it were intented to be insulting, or is simply incredibly tactless and without empathy. (stuff snipped) D. Spink Geeze Doug did I read the same post from NickDG that you did??? I must not have because I totally didn't take what he wrote as a slam on Dwain at all. I took it as Dwain is the current BASE God in the eyes of the noobs coming along these days... that he embodies all that to which they strive to become in their own right. Now you obviously didn't take it that way (and I'm sure you have your reasons for lashing out - whatever they may be), but I'm fairly sure you read into things a whole lot more deeply (and incorrectly) than NickDG intended, and probably missed (or intentionally overlooked) the underlying meaning of his statement: The new folks have not a clue of BASE jumping's roots. I can't count the number of times I've mentioned certain BASE pioneers' names to newer BASE jumpers and had them give me that deer-in-the-headlights stare; they had no idea, nor did they really seem to give a rats ass to find out. I think THAT is the intended meaning NickDG had. Next, and from your other post you wrote, in part: So of all the posts I've seen anyone make regarding this accident, you appear to have more information than anyone I've seen. TELL US WHAT YOU KNOW. Goddamn... we can't read people's fucking minds. Ask questions? Okay... What happened? BSBD, Gardner
  7. yes you have a point there... either way... tossing it was a waste.
  8. The really true hardcore fear factor thing would have been to acknowledge the presence of the embryo, to have cooked it and eaten it anyway.
  9. O-kaaaaay... so there's a roughly $10,000 surveillance system at the base of a 200' tower. Aside from the sheer curiosity factor, isn't this a little low to be worth the effort/exposure?? Surely there are better towers to be had elsewhere. Intriguing description, though. Sounds like some sort of conspiracy to irradiate the populace to me. It couldn't be too much of a coverup, though, 'cause one would figure if the surveillance system was "all that," then captors dressed in black would have jumped out from beneath well-camouflaged secret passageway doors with guns drawn and nabbed you then and there when you took photos of their nifty camera trio. Yup... must not be much of a big deal. Go find something a little taller. Aviation sectionals are your friend, Gardner edit:p.s. the beefy cabling and structure is probably for ice
  10. Remember when BASE jumpers used to be content with hucking the tip of a building crane overhanging a phatass parking lot??? oh well. Rubber bands be damned!!!! Luv and latex, Gardner
  11. LOL no doubt.... Hey man the thing that always wins my heart is someone who is always in my face asking questions - and who actually comes across like someone who really wants to get on with it. I generally find that, if someone is willing and able to get up at 4 am on sunday morning, climbs 300'+ without too much complaint.. . knows how to pack and is ready to ask questions (and actually hear the answers) at any given moment... I'm all for it. No spoon feeding. At all. Want some? Get some. Luv and motivation, Gardner
  12. Hey man... how are things?? Just looking at it I have to wonder what the hell the person specifying the system was thinking when he thought that three cams were necessary (okay I can understand a little redundancy... but three???? at ten feet?? I mean they have a pretty wide viewing angle - what's with three??) I just think it's weird, that's all. If I saw that at 250-300' plus I'd say it was a tv station that needs a weathercam perspective of some downtown area for the evening weather report.... as we have several of those down here. But the interesting part, to me, is these are 10' off the ground. Either someone had a huge zero-based budget to spend... or someone really wants to keep up with what is going on 10' off the ground at this tower. Who owns it?? put the fcc number into the search engines and see what you come up with. Looks weird to me. It must be a tower engineer that's been burned by someone in the past... I mean come on.. what's the chance of even seeing someone on the camera??? These days we've run across these cams on construction sites. Typically I think they only record during work operations - mainly to solve liability questions in the case of crane operator or ground crew errors... at least that's the impression I get from lurking the crane operator sites. I don't even think these things run at night. That is to say... I don't even think they're intended as a security function (to thwart folks like us....) I think they're more of a documentation tool for the company attorneys of any given construction or running project. That's just MHO If you say it was hot... how do you know this? Did you see some power output posted somewhere?? Were you wearing a dosimeter?? or are you just in tune with your environ. enough that you can feel the power radiating from it (and this is not a slam as I believe humans can detect shit like that, but have no proof.)?? If it's radiating the countryside with lots of bad stuff, then I wonder what the utility of cameras there would be anyway... how well do they actually record? Anybody seen a tape of their recordings?? Beuhler?? just curious. I've never seen any tape of evidence recorded by such cams.... has anyone? Could they be dummy deterents? Let's see the tape. love and coax, Gardner
  13. it appears that there's at least a nice crack running right up the center that starts on about the second or third pitch. I'd suspect some could be chimneyed, some could be jammed, but I am confident much of it is off-width. Beta I have is the crack is full of munge, so I'd be sure to take plenty of adequate pro
  14. hey is that darkstar? gardner
  15. first timers also have a tendancy to do 'throw and goes'... afraid they're gonna go in if they don't whip it out fast enough. Throw n go! You can see a lot of them at the bridge.
  16. Sounds like you really got your shit together. The only point I think that should be made is don't forget that what is "Just right" at one object (height above mean sea level) may turn out to be a deployment stall at another object. Fortunately, given your location and the altitude of the potato S, you could dial in your setting there (or off of an A at home and _probably_ be okay in Moab... I'd err on the side of more forward flight. Moab's opening altis are roughy 4500' msl and the air is usually quite hot, making the density altitude of great concern (it can get as high as 8000'+ in hot conditions). Call the ASOS (look up # on aveweb's airport database - I'm not posting it here) there to get current WX info while there. Opening in a deployment stall in Moab is scary (been there). But, then, a 180 with a lot of forward speed would be scary in some cases too. Advise getting the locals to take you somewhere well overhung and see how your settings fair when you first go there. IMHO the pizza rock isn't exactly the best place for a 1st E as there are more overhung things there that are probably more forgiving 'til you get dialed in. bsbd, Gardner
  17. So what is the obvious appropriate response from the desk owner upon arriving to find such a cubical? "Drat! Foiled again!" :)

    base rig

funny t hing I took a 6 year break in BASE... came back and everyone was jumping pin rigs and going stowed... talk about turning everything upside down. Just got the pin rig a few years ago... still not entirely certain how I feel about pins and going stowed (though I do...). gardner
  19. He moved to Boca Raton. bsbd, Gardner
  20. I wanted to take a moment to highlight the points that you made above. These points are probably one of the bigger make-or-break points I can think of in BASE. Word of someone's reckless actions, sub-par performance or other indiscretions (ethical matters that may be open to debate) travels like wildfire in this sport. Acting like an idiot and not listening when three people call you on the carpet about something grave will get you blacklisted in some places. Tough pill to swallow, yeah... bet it's easier to swallow than an earth-sized bite of dirt. If you read this and you think I may be talking about you... I probably am. Love and vomit, Gardner
  21. Dude I couldn't agree more. Those guys are nutz.
  22. Popular wisdom appears to be this: The majority of BASE jumping injuries happen while under canopy, so maximizing delay and minimizing time under canopy actually reduces the chances for injury. If you don't know the words... just hummit
  23. Sounds like a garden-variety electric fence to me. Usually you place the wire inside insulators (as opposed to tie-wraps). Touch the wire.. get a shock. Ever tried pissing on an electric fence?? heh heh.. Check with your local Farmer's Mutual exchange (Cooperative, etc.) have fun. gardner edit to add: http://store.yahoo.com/allpetvetsupply/equmfsh006.html
  24. make smaller adjustments and give the system time to respond. when you get it just right... don't touch it again unless it needs nanotweaking. g
