  1. Pop Yeah, I was surprised at how "conservative" these modifications were. Attached is a picture identified as Nona Pond and probably at the '62 World Meet or maybe '63 at the latest. Nona (now Nona King) still lives near Orange-- I saw her at the DZ a couple of weeks ago. The other picture is another version of the original one I posted. It was a postcard published by PI and this one also includes a cheapo. I'm inclined to think the black and gold canopy on the right is a Golden Knights canopy. HW
  2. if you're talking about the women in the second picture, blue jumpsuit, it's Margaret (Buffy) Swift. HW
  3. I didn't attempt to use my Photoshop wizardry to match the colors in the two pictures. Use your imagination. HW
  4. Not a clue. Before my time. I'll ask someone who might know. Here's another that seems to be the same canopy; it was apparently used for a cover on Dodge Magazine, whatever that was. HW
  5. For those who think parachutes have always been square.. This was a publicity shot from Parachutes, Inc., taken in the bowl at Orange, MA, probably 1962 or that time frame. Kind of a good perspective on what canopies looked like up close and personal. HW
  6. Dunno about MacBooks, but MacBook Pros have had battery problems. I took mine to the local Apple store last month and got a free replacement (would have been $129). HW
  7. It is on its way to its new summer home in the Northeast. HW
  8. Correct (though I didn't know Wally and am surprised/happy to learn that I was on a jump with him.) Photo by Pink Floyd. Attached is a pic of the freefall part; at least I think it was the same jump. I bought that maroon jumpsuit from Henri Pohjolainen, who had apparently used it in a competition or record attempt or something. If you look carefully at the other picture, you'll see at least a couple of other people you know (one of whom posts here frequently.) Also attached is a scan from my collection of worn out/too small T-shirts, probably bought on that trip in 1988 HW
  9. Err... "degrees Kelvin" refers here to color temperature, not temperature as in hot to the touch. 5500 kelvin ("degrees Kelvin" is not really the appropriate terminology) is more or less daylight, so 6000 kelvin is a little bluer than daylight and 4000 k would be redder. Maybe pedantic, but such things are important in photography and in color printing. A printing press room will often have a 5000 k light source to check the color accuracy of sheets coming off the press No asbestos required. HW
  10. I didn't think that. I thought they jumped out of an airplane and flew their stack past the bridge. Perhaps my title suggested otherwise. HW
  11. Please do. I will be surprised if he thinks it's him. BTW, just in front of the guy "..with the handlebar mustache and dashing white neckerchief," that's Shireen Khavari (black Protec helmet.). She was belly-flying then, but has gone to the dark side (CRW) these days. Hw
  12. New PS3 game, "Go! Sports Skydiving." Pretty cool exit, but the opening looks like a slammer. HW
  13. Err.. everyone in the second picture (plane10) is from the (now-defunct) Turners Falls, MA DZ. HW
  14. Yes, airplane-guru, it is a DC-3/C-47. But which one? Any other details to offer? Like who, when, where? HW
  15. Sleeve? How old-fashioned. You really need a POD. HW
  16. "These folks," in the case of the Hall of Fame of Parachuting, is one Jacques-André Istel. HW
  17. Thanks for the tidbit; the picture caption didn't mention the pilot. HW
  18. So what do I win for being a good sport? Amen to that. I've known Lew since 1966 and had the pleasure of being on a impromptu sunset six-way with him last summer. Three of the people on the jump had a total of < 500 jumps combined. Needless to say, Lew and I considerably upped the average age of the participants. He's always been humble, generous with his time and wisdom, and a genuinely nice person. I talked with him a few weeks ago -- he was on his way to a POPS thing in Florida. HW
  19. Aw, shucks. I thought #5 was going to be a "what is this plane." The guy kneeling in prayer is someone everyone here should know at least by name. HW
  20. Obviously much too easy. Tony Fugit in a Breezy over Titusville, FL. Photo from March '77 Parachutist -- caption was "I'd wear a parachute, too." The container appears to be the stock one that shipped initially with all Strato-Stars; it was considered to be part of the deployment system (ropes and rings). HW
  21. And who is the jumper? And what kind of main container? And all that stuff... HW
  22. There was a thread elsewhere about Cherokee Six jump aircraft. I recalled there (as did others) that the most vivid memory was how quickly it lost altitude on jump run with a couple of people outside the door. I only made a few demo jumps out of one. There is also a "hump" in the floor for the wing strut, if I recall correctly, that made for uncomfortable seating and movement in the plane. That was what prompted me to take the picture; the plane is in current use at a DZ in Bulgaria -- AVA Sport. I should have, but did not talk with them about it. HW
