From AC 105-2c (back of SIM) (emphasis added) 23.AIRCRAFT OPERATING AND AIRWORTHINESS REQUIREMENTS A. Procedure. Owners or operators of aircraft listed in Appendix 2, who are interested in obtaining authoriza- tion and operating limitations for these aircraft to be flown with the door open or removed, should forward a written request to the FSDO having jurisdiction over the area in which these operations are to be conducted. The request should contain the following information: 1. Name and address of the registered owner(s) of the aircraft. 2. Make, model, serial, and registration numbers of the aircraft. 3. Place where the aircraft is normally based. 4. Reason the aircraft is to be operated with a door open or removed. === Surprised me; I've jumped out of Cessnas with a conventional door on, and even jumped an Aztec or Apache once through the baggage door. (Note: this is from an Advisory Circular, not a regulation -- hence the "are interested.." and "should.." language.) HW

Maybe this will refresh your memory. HW

Who: Charette (judge), Poppenhager, and someone else. I could probably figure out the year. HW (p.s.: for extra points, who took the picture?)

You can find it here. BTW, that always reliable source of info, Wikipedia, dismisses the Proof connection, stating instead that Fandango "was originally a 30 minute black and white student film titled 'Montezuma's Revenge' by Kevin Reynolds while he was a student at USC..." HW

Does that mean everyone mentioned in a crazy story? That's a lot of books. Just read The Bonfire. Talk about crossposting. There's this message, and another on "Scary stories....". And I got not one but two emails from this dude. HW

Mr. Hooper has authorized me to provide the following narrative explanation (which is more or less supported by the magazine articles about the event, the '72 Nationals at Tahlequah.) ----- The day before the very first 10-man Nationals started, the base element dragged me away from potential spies. Them (conspiratorially): "We can take a three man out the door." Me: "What?" Them: "Shhhh. Yeah. Fog will swing out aft of the door and..." Me: "What?” Them: "...and Rumpson will back out, with Maznio holding on inside..." Me: "What?" Them: "...and they'll go out already hooked up with Fog hanging on and then he’ll just do a grip change and they’ll open into a three man." Me (exasperated by their tenuous grasp on reality): “What? No way.” Them (looking mutinous): “We want to try it.” Me (utterly unconvinced): "Okay, okay, we'll give it one try. But if it doesn't work, that’s it, we stick with what we've been doing. Jesus! How the hell can Fog hold on out there?" “Shhhh, dammit.” And on the next practice jump they did it. While on the ground...gasp, choke, and shrieks of protests to Chief Judge Garrison from everyone except Jerry Bird's All Stars. "Nothing against it in the rules," the imperturbable Skratch shrugged from his unenviable position. "Grump, grump, grump," they all said grumpily. And then decided to try it themselves. ------- HW

I think it's one of these. But maybe not. The seller is in Fredericksburg, VA. She should just hop right over to USPA, in her home town, and get someone to ID it. (Or you can just buy it, Doug, and I'll look at it next weekend.) HW

So take a look at Toast. HW -
The Caribou in the original picture was one of two from New Cal used at that boogie at Turners Falls, MA. A few more screen grabs from that TV show attached; poor quality, but remember they're from a TV show taped off the air 18 years ago. For those who have never seen one close up, they give you an idea of how big it is. A New Cal Boo was also used at Pepperell, MA, but had to operate out of Nashua, NH because its gear was too wide for the runway at Pepperell. You're right about the turbo conversion and about the death. As I recall, the FAA began sharply limiting (to 35 or so) the number of jumpers allowed in a Boo, making it economically less attractive for a boogie. Somewhere I have video of a spectacular "low pass" by the Caribou at Pepperell. The people who had gathered on the runway to moon the departing aircraft dropped to the prone position, pants down, as they saw the gear approaching. HW

Well, the picture came from here. HW

Which video editing program to buy for mac?
howardwhite replied to Supergeil's topic in Photography and Video
How are you tying to open it? By clicking on a movie file? If so, you can do a Get Info (Command-I) on the movie file and change the application that should be launched to open it. Get Info on iMovie '06 should also confirm that it is what it's supposed to be and that it has not somehow been aliased to open iMovie '08. Macs are easy; on Windoze, you would probably be mucking around in the Registry by now. HW -
OK, it's easy. But a cool picture, especially if you've never seen one land. This is a screen grab from a TV show, shot in 1989 at Turners Falls, MA HW

Gah.. No need to pay $55 to get iMovie 6. You can get it free from the Apple web site. As to burning DVDs, take a look at Roxio Toast 8. Not big money ( -
No.That was a Florida DZ. And they didn't allow bottles, only cans. HW

OK, time to clear up this mess. Both pictures were posted on Flickr by Vince Marchese. We made a bunch of jumps together back in the day, including our mutual 100th. When I posted the first one, I didn't know what it was. I then posted the other, which is a Porter; as the two are near each other on the Flickr page, I (stupid me) thought they were the same. It was an inadvertant red herring. They aren't. After consultation with Vince, we agree the first one, inside the plane, is this Stinson, which we jumped at Norfolk, MA (and is which is now hanging in the Seattle Air Museum.) What I remember about the Stinson (aside from the fact that it had no door and was really cold in the winter) is that there was a ball of putty above the instrument panel in which the pilot would stick the screws and other loose parts he found on the floor.
