Well, the TV station obviously found out it had made a booboo, and put up the real picture of granny's exit. Much more believable. HW

Gee, they put great grandmothers out on unusual skydives in Florida. This is a screen grab from the TV report. HW

Party with skydiving pioneers
howardwhite replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Do any of these names mean anything to you? Kim Emmons Knor, Deke Sonnichsen, Jerry Bourquin, Barbara Roquemore, Len Potts, Jim Arender, Bill McCarthy, Dick Myron, Gary Douris, Kevin Donnelly, Linda Miller.... You can meet and party with them and many others at the 2008 Pioneers of Sport Parachuting reunion June 26-29 in Salt Lake City. (You can even skydive with some of them; Skydive Salt Lake has donated a free King Air load to the first 10 reunion registrants who want to jump.) If those names are not familiar to you, they include world champions, early members of the Golden Knights, and a lot of people with very low D-numbers. Collectively, they have a lot of really great jump stories to swap. The reunion is primarily for people who started jumping in the 50s and 60s (though people who started later might be allowed to attend). It will be held at the Airport Hilton in Salt Lake City; registration for events, including a banquet Saturday evening, is $50. Other events available include golf at a nearby course, spring skiing at Snowbird, and shopping at Park City. To register, send your check to Elizabeth Wilson Foster, PO Box 551, Park City UT 84060. Or pm me for more details. HW -
Twin Otter jump planes - help wanted
howardwhite replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
For an article on the use of Twin Otters as jump planes, I want to talk with/exchange email with people with lots of experience as pilots, DZOs, and owners of them. I'l like to do this via email or phone rather than cluttering up the forums with random bits and pieces. And if anyone has verifiable information about jumps being made from a Twin Otter prior to April 17, 1971, I'd be eager to hear about it. Please PM me if you have useful info or want to suggest people I should talk with. HW -
National Sport Parachuting Center
howardwhite replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
ASC is just first in the Google Maps list: "1 - 10 of about 9,534 for national sport parachuting center" Care to sift through the other 9,533? HW -
National Sport Parachuting Center

You didn't know there is one? The Rand McNally Road Atlas (2008 edition) can't be wrong. So where is it? HW -
Any of you study the physiology of skydiving?
howardwhite replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have the John Lattimer Delk article article from Parachutist in the early '70s, as well as the Fenz-Epstein studies from even earlier. They are more psychology than psysiology, and they're too big (PDFs) to post, but if you want them, pm me. HW -
Any of you study the physiology of skydiving?
howardwhite replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A Google Scholar search lists a buncho studies, some physiology, still more psychology: http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=skydiving+physiology&l=en&lr=&btnG=Search Some of the stuff is free, but a lot more requires purchase (or access through a library system (like a University system.) HW -

What DZ, roughly when, and, for lots of extra points, who? HW

Formation names, and other stuff
howardwhite replied to Orange1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
And how 'bout "Docking a wedge" ? HW -
Maybe it was a Northwest specialty. I was on a couple of 5-6 Cessna formations at Issaquah, WA about a decade before this one. HW

Dave Ruckert, a.k.a. Dav3e. Here's the date info. HW

I'm surprised no one has recognized this momentous event. Perhaps a little more of the bandana will help. HW

Formation names, and other stuff
howardwhite replied to Orange1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Well, there are names for things, and then there are whuffo perceptions about what those names mean.... This is one of a set of cartoons, published in Canpara in 1983 by Sandy MacHattie. Others later. HW -
The bandana was in the collection of CPI founding member Dick Barber, which I delivered to the Skydiving Museum collection at Para-Gear Monday. The lady from Para-Gear who was helping catalog the donations looked at it, set it aside, and said she didn't think the museum would be displaying it. So I brought it home, and will wear it next time I'm at CPI. HW

What event (when and where) does this bandana celebrate? HW

1. A little more from the article containing the pictures. See references to Las Vegas. 2. It was 1965, not 1964. See poster. I also have a Sky Diver article about the 1965 meet. HW
-
Yup. I'm nearly sure it's Vic. The pictures are from a magazine article about the meet which I found in one of the many scrapbooks of the late Dick Barber, an old friend of Vic. Here's the cover of the magazine. I don't have any photo credit. I wish I knew who took it; it kind of captures some of the spirit of that Las Vegas meet, organized and promoted, if I recall correctly, by Hal Evans. HW

Although I don't have a portrait monitor, I have the same reaction to the waste of screen real estate from "My Stuff." I would prefer to have its contents in a horizontal top menu. HW

Well, one difference between SkyVenture NH and Niagara Freefall is that in New Hampshire, Hooters is ~ 1/2 mile away, where as at Niagara.... HW
-
I didn't know him (except by reputation). I think it's D-529, who almost always wore a red jumpsuit. The place is Las Vegas (area). The event is ??? HW
-
Well, there was that intermediate step (safe skydiving?) called the baton pass. For those who think this was taken at Elsinore, here are other pictures from the same magazine article. I think I recognize the person in the red jumpsuit in the second picture. HW
-
...and two little 'n's ... HW
-
Lucky she's not around to see you spell her first name like that. Not Elsinore. The caption on the picture refers to her as "U.S. Olympic champion parachutist." HW
