Cal City Otter & C206 at Pepperell, MA
howardwhite replied to ZigZagMarquis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
1. See attached. I think the only new one is Flock U (the local wingsuit operation.) 2. See attached. No block and tackle. (The one-armed tree guy later went for a right-seat ride in 121PM.) 3. Actually 300-series wings. The third 206 (the other white one) flew in today. HW -
Lots of people (including me) made their first jump out of this airplane or one just like it. HW

The caption for this picture, in the February, 1977, Parachutist, quotes USPA Demo Jumps doctrine: "...good demonstration jumps are of great public relations value to the sport.. and are made solely for the benefit and instruction of spectators." (Anyone know who and where? There is no identification with the picture.) HW

Don was an original. DZO. Pilot. Party animal. The story of his departure from the plane (at Northampton, MA) after a tail strike is a classic. I know some of the details but need to refresh them before posting. HW

Regarding ParaCommanders (PC's)

Maybe the POD patent will help. HW -
Don't make any assumptions about location or time. HW

Well, it is a 100 series, and a 100 series could have been a float plane, I guess, but AFAIK it wasn't. 121PM (Serial number #14) was one of several Twin Otters operated by Pilgrim Airlines, a New England regional carrier based in New London, CT. There is a picture of it at Boston-Logan Airport on Airliners.net. Another Pilgrim Otter, 125PM, was used occasionally as a jump plane in New England; I jumped it at Turners Falls, MA, among other places. HW -

There are a lot of stickers inside; 'course I don't know whether there are some missing. But I'll take some pix of the inside. On the way to altitude I offered a beer to the first person who correctly identified the function of the rectangular, fabric-lined opening in the back wall. Someone actually guessed right; I owe him. Van flew in Wednesday. 40 degrees on the ground and really windy. Remember, there's no heat in the plane. HW -

Yup. As 121PM was originally in the fleet of Pilgrim Airlines, out of New London, CT., it's not far from where it first worked for a living. HW -
Good guess So here's another, different one, with some familiar faces. Which plane, who's in it? HW

Emiko flew the 206; fastest-climbing 206 I've ever been in. They have two 206s there already and will bring in the third shortly. HW -

Had a great time jumping the Otter (and the 206 that came with it) today at its summer home in Massachusetts. (It's not "Desert Express" any more.) HW -
Well, I stole the pictures from SmugMug and then remembered that someone had posted a reference to you and the Thunder Chicken here last year. So here are a few more (I have taken the liberty of cleaning them up a bit in Photoshop.) Cool pictures. Tell all. HW
-
I assume this is the same Thunder Chicken mentioned in a thread last year. Some more fun pictures where this came from. HW

Regarding ParaCommanders (PC's)
howardwhite replied to Usetawuz's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I can't instantly find a color picture of one (the usual bookshelf chaos), but here's a B&W picture with some vital statistics. Para-Gear ad, December '76 HW -
I was saddened to learn of the death Thursday of Dick Barber, C-2375, a charter member of Connecticut Parachutists Inc., a long-time national and international skydiving judge, and a warm, smart, and funny guy. Dick was awarded USPA's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 "for dedicated service to all competitors as a judge at countless U.S. Nationals and world championships, and for the inspiration provided to judges." He was also an honorary member of the U.S. Army's Golden Knights. Dick was a familiar figure at skydiving meets around the Northeast and around the country and world as a National and FAI-rated judge. He suffered a severe heart attack while judging at the U.S. Nationals in Arizona in 1998. He was one of the 35 graduates of the first USPA Instructor Certification Course, held in Manchester, CT in April,1970. A death notice and guest book are here. Private services will be held later. HW

Oh. You must mean something like this? HW

We drag that one out at the DZ occasionally, after the group tough guy hurls and his buddies are laughing at him. HW -
This is the "official" Pioneer Black Knight PC, which does not seem to match your description. HW

I have one (cover page attached) as a ~8mb PDF. Too big to post; pm me if you want it via mail. HW

No. I have both (not that I use either very much.) HW
