  1. Ok on a serious note then: (replying on the earlier post) If 1 or 2 people in The Netherlands have to stay on the ground more often because of wind, and by doing that we can save the lot, I chose that option... 4. As long as you don't go into a category wich is higher than your current category you're flying in now, you can downsize. 8. A number of factors have led to the 170 sq feet minimum. Most important 2: 1) a 120 sq feet flies ALOT faster at 1.2 then a 170 sq feet at 1.2 2) It's very rare to find someone in the Netherlands that only weighs (body weight) 105 pounds. 9. You shouldn't concentrate on the list of canopies to much. It's only a first list and, as mentioned in my fipo it should be update regulary, at least once a year. I personally think the Spark should be beside the sabre (1) and a triathlon should be beside the spectre. Currently the sabre2 is thought of as a crossing between the stilletto and a sabre, and it is judge accordingly. When needed this can be adjusted whenever the list is updated. Also the spectre is considered the be a good starter canopy, but not suited for the first jumps, that's why it's a cat II canopy (25 jumps and more). This specific set of rules seems poorly thought out, poorly constructed, and is being poorly implemented. Ok, I know it's not US made, but aren't you a little harsh here ? It's been in the making for over a year, there were 2 national input day (mandatory for every1 holding an instruction license) and it has been implemented last weekend, so I it's a little early to judge that factor... 10. Hi, Right and wrong. Everyone has to obey the rules, but the rules only are in effect when the jumper change category. The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 12. Hi Sas, I thought we talked about it, but here goes: If we say you now jump in cat IV, based on the size of your canopy, you won't be changing category when you switch to a stiletto 120, so you can chose that canopy. 13. Ok, this is a rather common misconception, also here in The Netherlands. You can't be already in breach of the regulations: In art. 501 of the dutch Safety Regulations, a new canopy regulation is introduced. It states that anyone who wants to jump with a certain canopy and by choice that canopy changes from one experience category to another one, has to obey certain rules. The rules only apply when you change from 1 canopy to another and by doing that also change to a higher category. The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. If you're good at it and continue to jump, you'll see a lot of friends die...
  14. Hi everyone, In The Netherlands, a new canopy regulation has gone into effect. What are your opinions? Blue Ones Paul Renting RULES For Canopy choice In art. 501 of the dutch Safety Regulations, a new canopy regulation is introduced. It states that anyone who wants to jump with a certain canopy and by choice that canopy changes from one experience category to another one, has to obey certain rules. The rules are as follows: Every canopy is assigned to a certain category. This category is assigned based on type (see appendix), it’s size and also it’s wingload which it will have in combination with the jumper. The five categories are: I : assigned type; wingload max.1,1; size min. 170 sqft II : assigned type; wingload max.1,1; size min. 170 sqft III : assigned type; wingload max.1,3; size min. 150 sqft IV : assigned type; wingload max.1,5; size min. 120 sqft V : no limitations Jumpers are assigned to five experience categories. These categories are based on total number of jumps, but also de number of jumps in the last 12 months. I : Less than 25 jumps II : 25 to 100 jumps III : 100 to 500 jumps; At least 25 in the last 12 months IV : 500 to 1000 jumps; At least 50 in the last 12 months V : Over 1000 jumps; At least 100 jumps in the last 12 months A jumper, who wants to jump a canopy from category I, II, III, IV, or V is only allowed to jump that canopy if he, or she, at least is assigned to the appropriate experience category. For the type assignment of each (brand, type) canopy, the regulators are advised by a technical committee, which updates the list as many times as needed, but at least once a year. When a certain type hasn’t been assigned to a category (yet), it should be handled as an category V canopy. When a transition is made to a canopy assigned to a higher category, it is strongly advised to follow a canopy control program, like the one that is mandatory for the A or B license. (which I haven’t attached, but you can image a basic canopy control program), with the new canopy. The system is visualized in the “Dutch Bulls-eye” which is attached. 15. Though alot was unclear, because the reserve ride wasn't noticed before she was under the reserve canopy. One jumper did notice though that the cell's were inflated, only the nose was closed (for that cell). Sadly it's guessing at this point. Anywayz, personally I don't expect a material problem here, but then again, we're only guessing The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 17. This is wrong! In m/s: Expert: fires at 35 m/s or faster at 750 feet Student: fires between 13 m/s and 35 m/s at 1000 feet Fires at 35 m/s or faster at 750 feet. The student is only ment for the first few (Student) jumps. Go for the expert. The 1 or 2 versions depends on the rig you are jumping. (E.g. a pop-top needs a 2 pin version). 20. Because the most important part of your release system is NOT to release, that's why it's a pillow. Your reserve is to important (IMHO) to not use a metal handle. (If all goes wrong, I ALWAYS (well almost always) am able to pull my reserve, if necessaryin the mess above me. I'm still in doubt about the soft loop handle. But the metal handle doesn't stick out as much as the soft loop handle, that's why I'm sticking with metal for now. The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 21. Hi, I've made about 150 jumps on my Jav odyssey; 1) Very comfortable (but this is my first new rig (instead of second hand) 2) Under canopy very comfortable as long as I keep the rings on my hip when I tighten my legbands (I know the rings should be on my hips, but on my rig I have to "activly" keep them in place) 3) 1 hard opening, couldn't jump for 3 days, but that was caused by the camera gear on my head (neck injury) 4) The toggles had to be modified because the slider would release them. This occured on mine and another rig. Both velcroless triple riser. It is solved by removing the stiching around the toggle grommet. (I still don't like the idea that my toggles come lose so easily btw) 5) I have pull-out and the bridle between the handle and pin is way too long (especially when you use camera wings) I had it shorten. (btw I also modified it so it would have a trolley effect on it (courtesy of Henny Wiggers (www.parashoot.nl)) It's a good rig, but it's not perfect, watch out for these kind of things on rigs. I'm not sure if my next rig will be a javelin also... (But I'm more and more falling in love with another rig, of wich i jumped the "2" version earlier ) The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 22. I was just thinking about that possibility, I presumme the RSL part after the "pin-puller" has quite alot of slack on it? 1) To prevent de skyhook ever to hang on the RSL part (which on his turn hangs on a reserve flap) 2) To prevent de pin-puller not being able to pull the pin because the skyhook is already being pulled on by the main. The latter would probably still result in a reserve deployment, but it would also destroy the reserve container... The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. If you're good at it and continue to jump, you'll see a lot of friends die...
  23. Uhm... hopping this won't become a yes/no discussion... Neither can I check my cypres (if the loop goes through the cutter). I must agree with bill, if it fails (I won't discuss if that is a possibility) it doesn't interfere with the normal use of a normal reserve deployment. All in all it looks like a great system, but I know myself, first let it settle (in my mind) and then judge it... The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. If you're good at it and continue to jump, you'll see a lot of friends die...
