Most people I think will imediatley go to the buying of beer for firsts, pieing people for the 1000th jump and so on. Drinking games and other things come and go but I started in 73 and the one consistant tradition in all that time which doesn't seem to change from decade to decade or country to country, is the honest to goodness friendship and comradery between jumpers. I've seen it so many times with people from different backgrounds and countrys so consistantly, and I know this may sound a little soppy to some, but I think deep down this is the favorite tradition in a lot of peoples minds. I have a 24' flat screen at work and spend all day doing CAD drawings and spreed sheets. Makes it a lot easier to see more of the spred sheet at one time,(I have some rather large ones) and makes navigating around large drawings much easier as well. Generalizations can be a dangerous way to consider any race or religion. and this guy may indeed have been a single wacko along the lines of the Oklahoma bombers or the cultists at Waco. However there does seem to be a great number of people who on one hand claim this particular religion to be one of peace, love and tolerance, while one the other hand still believe stoning women to death for adultery is OK and belive that by sucide bombing and killing a bunch of people, wether they be Isrealies, Yanks or Aussies, (and usually civilian inocents), gaurantees them a place in paradise at the right hand of God. Agreed the scale was incorrect but the lesson was an analogie relating to the larger scales involved in physics. Along with gravitational influances and proximity to large masses. Things get scaled down to fit into our tiny highschool brains. So analogy fundmentally correct, in the context of larger scales. IE: assume the rope the jumpers are hanging on to being hundreds of miles long? Theoretical of courseand assume on mass or drag effect on the rope itself. I was told by my physics teacher in highschool that as one side of the hole was closer to the equator it was traveling trough space faster then the other side, due to the distance of the equator. (Imagine the travel trough space as a straight line) This minute difference in the realative speed of north and south sides of the hole impart the spin into the water as it drops, or changes vector through space. (Imagine two bodies exiting seperate airplanes flying beside each other at slightly different speeds and each holding on to opposite ends of the same rope. Back in the sixties the US signed up to change to metric at the same time Canada was going to convert. But the US, in what now seems to be a bit of a tradition, (like Kyoto) renieged on the agreement and decided not to go ahead and be in line with the rest of the world. Why? I suppose big business and thier mouthpiecies in Washington claimed it would be too expensive. I've never heard of it happening at any Drop Zone. It's one of those things that is a potential, but not a very big one. If the situation becomes such that the industry feels it is losing out on significant income, or they feel they need to make and example of someone, they may do something some day. If you are making money for a tape then you should pay royalties, that depends on your sense of what's right or wrong. But I really couldn't see anyone paying the lawyer bags of money to recoup the few pennies involved. And it is quite literally pennies per unit. When i play at a pub or restaurant, using other peoples songs,which I do. the pub is up for a total few dollars per three hour gig. "IF THEY PAY AT All" Every country pretty much has an association like APRA which will collect and distribute the royalties due to artists. They collect on radio time, public performances etc. Other wise the atrtists would get income from only album sales and that is the small part of income for some. Technically you are supposed to pay a royalty for any song used in any fasion whatsoever if you are in turn being paid money through the use of that song. Here in New Zealand the agency responsible to collect royalties is APRA and they are intitled to collect royalties when ever I do a Gig and use other peoples songs. They are responsible to pay royalties to me if someone else uses my songs. They are intitled to collect royalties from Pubs or restaurants playing background music. How tightly this is controled depends on the organization and the country involved. So putting music onto a video you are not being paid for is OK. Putting it onto a tandem video which the passenger has paid for is due for royalties. I doubt they will ever come after you as the amounts of money involved per item is very small. Migrains suck! I get them from time to time, usually preceded by some some blind spots which manifest as sort of shimering areas just off the central vision area. Aperantly this is caused by a constriction in the blood vessels to the brain reducing the blood flow. As I get a warning of the impending headache from the blind spots I have discovered the best thing to do is to get some excercise in and get the heart beating a bit faster. Hey we are lovable, Dosn't mean you guys can't be too. I got on the thread originaly because of the tone of the comment being demeaning to your northern nieghbours. Canada is a great place, just as the U.S. is. Many of us would take exception to the general tone of comments from our southern nieghbours at times. Once had a Wedge Tail Eagle fly in formation with me in Queensland. Flew beside me and across the top of my canopy about two feet off the top skin.
