I would finish your A license then give them a go. At the end of the day they are a tool to help you get the most out of FS. Some people struggle initially for some reason and so I would certainly check with people who know you first. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Student Etiquette-Getting Own Altimeter
nigel99 replied to GrayAnderson's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A good quality analog altimeter is a good investment. Low cost, reliable and allows you to choose something else later with more knowledge. What a digital doesn't give you is a binary "danger zone" reading. As someone who unexpectedly found themselves in freefall approaching 1000 ft (before the days of AAD) I can tell you I am grateful for the red portion of the altimeter... Xbox 360 is the slightly older model. You have more choice of games on the 360 than the xbox 1. But unless you are a really liberal parent I think you still struggle to find xbox games suitable for an 8 yr old. Definitely better to play on than a pc though. haha - No I just tend to pack to pay for jumping money - the day job pays the bills. That means I can be selective. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I don't know where that statistic comes from but it is about the same as what a dz I jump at experiences. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

As someone who packs for people these are my thoughts. If you are a team and negotiate team rates and want fast pack jobs then make sure the brakes are set, excess stowed and PC cocked. When you are run off your feet doing your best to help meet the timing then all this helps. If doing student, tandem or the odd cash pack I don't really care what state the equipment is given to me in. I don't buy into the ethos of you pay for the pack and not the opening and I do take care. There are people with attitude who blame packers and I won't pack for them anymore (we have a guy who is constantly chopping and it is always the packers fault. funny that other people don't seem to have the same issues) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

York (outside Perth) is often looking for people. You can probably get work in the kitchen. To pack anywhere in Oz you will need to get your packer B details on the APF website. Skydive Jurien Bay is really good but don't know about employment. At 48 jumps you are going to be very restricted on jumps until you get your B license. Almost certainly you will need to do b rels with a coach - if you come to Perth I am happy to do b rels at York for free (just cover your slot) and can help with your packer B. Any skydivers interested in hanging out and exploring London a bit? I am going to be in town those days and plan on staying in a hostel. I haven't made any real plans, but I do want to explore the night life that I missed out on when I lived here as I was married

Yep, approach controls use primary radar much more than center (enroute) controllers, which I was. It's very possible jumpers could show up on radar. Someone mentioned birds showing up on radar. That's actually correct and I should amend my earlier statement about flesh and bone not reflecting radar. It's rare to see bird flocks but not unheard of. Most of my time was spent ignoring primary radar unless a particular blip starting leaving histories like an airplane. Called a couple of those that were a big surprise to the pilots. Flesh and bone doesn't absorb microwaves very efficiently and it will depend on the frequency used as well. It would be very interesting to see how it showed up. In general dz.com posters are saturated in the sport and dont really understand or connect with people who do 20-30 jumps a year. You arent going to get a meaningful answer here. I suggest you simply look for a nice friendly dz, go and do a few jumps on rental gear and when you have proven yourself to management ask the question. The separate issue is your canopy choice at your jump numbers. Its probably a really good idea to rethink it. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Possible Cutaway GPS Tracker Solution - Iota
nigel99 replied to rohicks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Technology idea is pretty sound and figures for range sort of stack up. You would probably get about 2 miles reliably in the country. Business case of $250k is right ballpark for cheap development. you could sew it on the d bag. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
What is one thing that you will absolutely never understand the appeal of?
nigel99 replied to promise5's topic in The Bonfire
Jesus tittyfucking christ. I'm guessing you don't do that commute 5 days a week? Setting aside the financial cost of putting that many miles on a car (unless you're taking a train or something, which would suck less as long as it's not crowded and you get to sit down and read or something… once I have to touch or smell other people, public transit gets old in about 40 seconds), the idea of spending 37.5% of a normal work day going either to or from work without getting paid for is… actually almost offensive How do you do it? I do an hour and half each way and have done for many years in various roles. Favourite mode of transport for long travel is public transport (relax and read, browse web etc), then motorbike, least favourite is car. On the original topic of the thread - I will never understand anal sex or artificial titties. Artificial titties is the current disagreement with the girlfriend who is keen on them. two out cutaway-rsl side riser release

Sorry I had missed (forgotten) the fact that you had inspected it. I am curious what your speculation on how it happened? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
two out cutaway-rsl side riser release
nigel99 replied to ridebmxbikes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
John, You don't think that if it somehow caught and put that much stress on the housing, maybe there is a small amount of evidence or clues at the other end still? A fascinating and disconcerting malfunction though! By coincidence I saw this on a facebook video this morning. Notice how the RSL lanyard is blowing around - I wonder if something like that could have happened and snagged on something? two out cutaway-rsl side riser release
nigel99 replied to ridebmxbikes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Could you post a picture of the other end of the cutaway housing? My instinct says there is something that end that snagged or fouled on the riser effectively pulling it from the riser side. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Rich Winstock Swoop Incident Cover-Up
nigel99 replied to skydived19006's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You know watching this thread as both a USPA and APF member, I am extremely thankful for the well laid out and transparent incident reporting system we have in place in Australia. You will notice that there is almost never any drama associated with Australian incidents, speculation and heresay are kept to an absolute minimum. Even in serious (fatal) incidents where people have screwed up there is not the same blood lust and the disciplinary process runs its course outside of the public eye. Contrast that with the mess, speculation and lack of clarity on virtually all USPA incidents. There are threads in incidents that years later people are still looking for closure on. As far as this specific incident goes, as members of the USPA if it really is important to people I suggest that the route Airtwardo has taken of contacting people is appropriate and so would writing letters to the parachutist mag/USPA. Did you do night jump? If so, any advise?
nigel99 replied to SFBayArea's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree and along these lines I found a head torch to be a bad idea on one night jump. On opening my slider reflected the torchlight and resulted in pretty much blinding me. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
APF Promotional Video - "How to Skydive"
nigel99 replied to NWFlyer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wow, I concur. 2 thoughts . . .. Everyone knows that a British accent makes statements seem more intelligent. Suddenly I'm convinced that Australian accents make everything seem more fun. . . And I thought it was cool that they had a DZ for their bigways that looked just like Eloy. Vader and I are both in the video, so at least 2 dz commers made it in Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Personally to a point I don't think that jump numbers are that relevant. The factors that I have found to be very relevant are 1) Currency in the discipline - both of yourself and others on the jump 2) Skill level of the group 3) Planning that has been done prior to the jump When a big way goes as planned they are very simple and straightforward. It is when the formation doesn't build and the carefully laid out track off plans are useless that things get scary very quickly. I watched a very good friend with 1000+ jumps have a canopy collision on opening with another person who had 2000+ jumps, because the person with 2000+ tracked right the way through the middle of the formation when it didn't build as planned. Realistically I think you should be very comfortable on 8-12 ways before going onto the bigger stuff. You need the ability to make rapid decisions on what to do, where to go, planning your outs etc. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Firstly you ladies need to take things really carefully online. I worked in a company where one of the guys started stalking a female member of staff and it was hell for her, very scary and ended up requiring police involvement. I can't remember where I read it, but most stalkers lose interest if their target isn't active. Remembering that ANY communication can be misconstrued, I know it affects your life but perhaps taking a break from posting for a while will allow (him?) to move on to other people. Another option could be to try and ignore their posts completely, just treating it as noise. Provided you aren't in physical danger or posting stuff that links back to your 'real' life.
