  1. Reinvent the police. Win hearts and minds with a softer approach to policing
  2. As you grapple with violence and protests I did not realise today is apparently Gun Violence awareness day. I get the wear orange is probably from the hunting practices, but all I can think of when seeing wear orange is Trump
  3. https://news.sky.com/story/woman-saved-after-breast-implant-deflected-bullet-away-from-her-heart-11976684 And in these troubled times. A good reason to get breast implants :)
  4. https://news.sky.com/story/pair-hired-for-mans-broom-sexual-fantasy-turn-up-in-bedroom-at-wrong-address-with-machetes-11996365 Some Aussie news from a couple of weeks ago. Not good news, but will make you smile
  5. Shows brutality is systemic. When that level of violence is seen as being normalised, you have a big problem and probably best they resigned.
  6. Didn’t some of your police do exactly what is being suggested? Put down the riot shield and join in? Certainly that story was reported here in Australia
  7. No it won’t solve everything, but building empathy and connection goes a long way towards healing and diffusing a situation. Us versus them is such a universal problem. Witness the free flyer verse bellyflier divides that occur on many drop zones.
  8. https://globalnews.ca/news/7016101/george-floyd-protests-hong-kong-iran-china/ And there you go! Trump winning biggly
  9. As Bill said to me, we should not attack people no matter how much they grate on us. It can be hard to do. Yes it’s easy to get sucked into trolling either real or perceived. I’m glad I avoided a ban for my comment, it would have been beer for my first in nearly 20 years on this site. We have the ignore feature on the ‘new’ site for a reason. I enjoy the discussion and variety of views no matter how different to mine. I guess the Trump behaviour has found its way here. Let’s try and be bigger than him and keep it respectful, even when we disagree
  10. I accept the rebuke. As I posted I already thought it was close to the line, so I should have listened to my internal voice. Ive got my Laptop up, so the right thing to do is turn on ignore like many of you have.
  11. What a sad bunch we are :) Funny how this virtual community influences us
  12. Thanks. Yes very different skills needed I would imagine. Although a funny story. I employed an ex special forces Major back in the UK. He was doing ‘hearts and minds’ work in Iraq at some point in his career. He was in the news for being chased down the street by a group of angry Iraqi women. It’s too long ago to remember the specifics
  13. Watching from afar has got me wondering. What is the quality of police training in the USA? There appears to be a systemic lack of skills with de escalation tactics. I am an avid reader and one of my favourite books is the ‘Gift of Fear’ that I bought a long time ago. He is a world leader on dealing with crisis (has advised many very well known figures) and he talks about the psychology of some high stress situations and how police instinctively started shooting at the perception of danger. With the riots and protests it is easy to be an armchair critic with how it should be done. Police aren’t responsible for the dysfunction in society and inequality that breeds protest. But they are core to managing the outcomes
  14. There’s a difference between having your own echo chamber and being a masochist. I tend to read multiple news sources ranging from the BBC all the way through to Fox News. I’ve also got friends and family that are trump supporters and we have spirited debate. On here I’ve got you to represent the MAGA crowd, at least you’ve got the backbone to own your views, if nothing else I respect that. The key difference with Turtle is that I can’t figure out if he’s got no backbone at all and so can’t own his beliefs or is simply an outright troll.
  15. As soon as I’m back in my computer I’m joining you. Sadly the feature doesn’t appear to work on mobile. it has been interesting to see the gradual slipping of the mask, empowered by the lord and master Trump, the racism and bigotry is being hidden less and less
  16. Haha. I said it doesn’t excuse the person who did it. That isn’t giving them a pass. It’s ok I recognise that your bias is strong, so it’s hard for you to read the statement without filtering it out.
  17. Seems a number of people went to his aid. Commentators were pissed off and shocked. Doesn’t excuse the person who did it. So you still letting your bias and silver linings excuse the police violence?
  18. You don’t appear to mind the cops doing the running over and shooting? Trump and his goons keep escalating the violence. Civil unrest is messy, of course there are bad apples involved in the protests. But I’ll also say that when peaceful protest is ignored and oppression continues people tend to turn to violence. Im sure you don’t need to worry, your red MAGA hat will keep you safe
  19. Quiet with the facts. You might make it difficult for the biased posters here to keep their orange tinted glasses on
  20. https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2020/06/anti-terrorist-unit-arrests-followers-protest-200604062308834.html Some very fine people. And an unarmed man gunned down by police in LA
  21. Guess I need to login on a computer. Now to remember my password
  22. How do you turn on the ignore function? I couldn’t find the setting
  23. I’ve just finished reading this book. Honestly it is a shocking insight into the views held by many African Americans. I had never heard of it before but Obama mentioned it yesterday and I like his book recommendations. I highly recommend reading it. For me it provided insight into the deep pain being felt by many of those protestors.
