  1. The BPA idea is a fairly good one. To make it work I think it would need to be static line. To be honest though there are cheaper and safer outreach programs that could be run. For example high ropes, wilderness camping (just avoid the polar bears). Personally I find the UK a terrible environment for teenagers unless you have fairly significant disposable income. We do not have alot of low cost high energy outlets for teens. Surfing, hiking, BMX tracks, wild camping, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing and the list goes on. None of this is readily available to middle England. The result is that teens "hang". You want to know a simple suggestion? Give up the sacred cow of village commons and woods being areas of quiet. Put in some basic rules and let the kids ride mini-motos. Don't require oversight and health and safety, just give them some freedom. 2. The BPA operations manual says "Where parachutists restraints are fitted, they are to be used during take off and landing." Thanks. It is interesting seeing the differences between the UK and US way of doing things. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  4. Interesting so seat belts are not compulsory in the UK? Probably. Do you jump with an altimeter on your SL jumps? If so check how high you are under canopy next time you jump. My guess if you only lose 100-200 feet on a typical deployment. I hated sitting next to the open door. By the way a 206 is a 6 seater (including the pilot). 5. So nothing then eh DD? Why don't you get off your bum and actually DO something? we're going back to the thirties my man. let's all keep calm and not incite with stupid 'shoot the scum' political rhetoric eh? this sort of thing is going to carry on for years - at the moment i have my hands full with ensuring my own little 'uns are brought up proper like. how about an outreach programme from the bpa to these youngsters? they obviously crave a bit of adrenaline... Great idea DD. Lets fill up the skydiving community with yahoo's who refuse to acknowledge authority or take advice! Well maybe that horse has already left the stable Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. Been there, done that... and failed. It is called the Euro. No both the UK and US should learn to live within their means. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. DD the bankers did not "do this". The rioters are responsible for their own actions. Don't get me wrong, the bankers should not have got away with what they do/did. It is immoral and they should have been punished. Can you post any suggestions on how things can realistically be fixed? 8. Well if that's the case then maybe some Legal Phone hacking could be put to GOOD use!! http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/08/london-riots-blackberry-messenger-looting The article that I read was in the Independent, but the gist is still in this. It is hard not to see the pure criminal element when they bother to use tools to try and evade the police. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Heh heh In other words, the truly professional rioters are appalled at these people's lack of professionalism. Must have standards, after all. Actually as rioting goes they did quite a job, it may have been a complete accident but their employment of swam tactics overwhelmed the agents of law enforcement who were not able to use the tactics of containment and kettling that they would against a large mob. Apparently Blackberry messenger was used extensively to co-ordinate the riots. It does make you wonder if there is a slightly more organised theme to this, not that I have any idea on who it would be? Gordon Brown's revenge maybe Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. You are a sweet young virgin in SC aren't you? In SC religion and gun threads have NOTHING to do with reasonable debate. They are slinging matches where people have entrenched and often extremist views with no middle ground. Sadly some of the threads have the potential to be very interesting... 11. I agree with the vast majority of your post, but the underlying question is 'whats pissing them off?' We can contain this situation but to cure it we need to get to those answers first. Same here J - BUT I'm not sure there are any real reasons behind this. They are not Demonstrating, just plain breaking the Law - as a mob. Now finding and fixing the underlying CAUSE is what is incredibly important. I currently believe the cause is the general lack of DISCIPLINE and RESPECT that has been enforced by the stupid level of political correctness that WE have allowed to guide the education of our kids. Kids are allowed to get away with murder (literally) and woe behold anyone who should try to correct anyone elses brats. We need to get back to teaching kids how to behave[full stop]. The problem is even the parents don't know how to behave Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. I have just seen that the IPCC have said there is no evidence that Marks gun had been fired. Personally I have no problem with the conduct of CO19 (this is our specialist armed branch of the police). Clearly Mark had an illegal gun and the officers had no idea that he would not use it. There was the incident a few years ago where a drunk with a table leg was shot and killed, because it was believed it was a shotgun. I feel safe with our armed police as they are highly trained and tend to show restraint. We don't tend to get incidents like those in the US where officers open fire, and completely innocent people are killed or injured including bystanders. A quirk of our having dubious neighbours means that I have had the pleasure of hosting armed police in my back garden on a few occasions. I have never felt at risk from them and they were utterly professional. What many Americans seem to misunderstand is that while our police are unarmed, there is a good support network of armed police. It is simply that they are used on an as needed basis, even if the weapon involved is a knife, hammer etc. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Funny that is pretty much what I said to my wife. I wonder whether it is time for us to radically rethink the benefits system. We are too poor to keep paying people to sit on their butts and watch flat screen televisions, it also generates a "give me" mentality. 14. Hi, Agreed baton rounds were mentioned (I don't know the difference)... BTW someone who was shot in Croydon last night has just died. News headline in airport lounge so I don't know who, what or why. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. +1 The police need to start coming down on these criminals HARD that's what set them off in the first place... In my day we were given a short sharp shock, took a while to put me back on the straight and narrow but it worked, of course in those days the local bobby was allowed to give you a cuff round the neck. and if I dared tell my parents that the bobby had cuffed me my father would have given me what for. I really don't know who is at fault, but I do know that Socialism is 90% to blame. I agree that it needs the ability to meet out swift discipline in the form of a cuff on the ear for youngsters. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14453918 Interesting pictures Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. That is nonsense. You "might" be able to use that excuse for Totenham 4 days ago. The reality is that society is breaking down. and it broke from the top down. everyone had their snouts in the trough. social mobility has broken down. this is the result... I don't disagree. I think this quote from Spain is a good summary We have made the mistake of believing that people are mature enough and intellectually capable of managing themselves. It goes right down to not being able to discipline children. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  17. That is nonsense. You "might" be able to use that excuse for Totenham 4 days ago. The reality is that society is breaking down. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past and so is discipline. The sad thing is that I don't believe anyone has a solution. 18. I just watched the chief of police say on Sky how ill informed the media are. Plastic bullets went out of fashion decades ago according to him. He also lashed out at the media for demanding water canons, saying that they only work in certain circumstances (dense crowds etc). 16 000 police out and about tonight. 19. With all due respect you are wrong again. These are just a few of the things covered in the ISP program. Where did you get your training? Sparky Canopy control, landing approach, landing principles, more on the landing pattern, landing patterns for higher winds, downwind landings, rear riser control, high-wind landings, braked turns, approaches, and landings, maximum-performance canopy turns, front riser control While it is covered in a FJC, I think it highlights the fact that people are expected to absorb quite a lot of information in a single sitting. Some people grew up around aircraft or skydiving so the terminology and basic concepts are familiar, but not everyone does. I think it goes to show how important continuing education throughout the learning process is. It is also one of my pet peeves with regards to a system where people don't have a single instructor for the bulk of their training. Different instructors emphasis different things at different times and it is quite easy for information to fall through the gaps. By the way the ISP is really good if people bother to read it, but it does require a grasp of terminology. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  20. Had a chance to hear some analysis and detailed news. Interesting points in no particular order - Iran urges restraint in dealing with the protests I bet they have been waiting to be able to say something like this for years. - Asian shop owner in tears on Radio 4, his whole livelihood destroyed. Interestingly he claims that no black owned shops were targeted only white and asian. The guy was really distraught 10 years of building a business to have it destroyed overnight. - It appears a substantial number of rioters are school aged teenagers. - video on BBC of an injured youngster being helped up by a group of youngsters and then subsequently mugged Finally to those people who have been mentioning the "targeting" of certain minorities. Realise that the UK police database is used to set markers on people, vehicles, addresses etc. If you have a criminal record of any sort you WILL be heavily targeted. My next door neighbours child is serving a 3 year sentence for GBH. I can tell you that prior to him being put away if there was any crime within 2 or 3 miles of us, you could guarantee that he would get a visit from the police. Yes he is black, but another kid on the block is also black and has never had a visit from the cops. The difference is the other kid is clean. 21. I live about 25 miles from Central London, so relatively speaking yes. I have been taken by surprise by the strength of feeling. I am pretty safe provided they stick to blacks as I live in an AQ friendly neighbourhood. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. Pardon the dumb question, but, what's a chav? Similar term to trailer trash but from this side of the world. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
