  2. There is a Crown Point on US231 in Indiana according to Google. But having been to Alabama I am pretty sure that letter could be a serious suggestion from that part of the world Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. This letter was written to an Indiana newspaper. It is either one seriously challenged person, or someone with a great sense of humour. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Its about the same for me. It's a nice way for family to see what's happening in our lives without us having to pic up the phone Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. If I understand correctly you have a "training" tandem scheduled, but are planning on doing "fun" tandems in the interim? If that is correct use the tandems to learn. If your current tandem instructor is not prepared to use the jumps to teach, I suggest you ask here as some of the TI's are eager to do so. 6. This is correct however you only need a packer B to allow you to pack mains for students, of which tandems are also counted as the jumper on the front is classed as a student. Any body is able to pack the main of a licensed jumper as they are choosing to let someone pack for them, hence the responsibility is on then for having someone they trust pack it. Thanks for the input. I have just read the Australian ops manual on packing and it seems to be quite a good system. There is also a currency requirement which is interesting. 7. What's also ironic is that you're commenting on anything having to do with this topic. Like it or not, you've positioned yourself in the same group as Sangi or VB. Read all the posts about Sangi post-accident, and replace his name with yours. That's exactly what it's going to look like if you follow suit. You should only hope for a friend and cheerleader like VB to stand up for you while you literally cannot stand up. Dave, a while ago Docpop posted that he learned his lesson and had up sized (my paraphrase) I don't know what happened to cause the change of heart but his posting style changed at the same time as he up-sized. 8. The power of the mind is amazing. How many of your 35% were non-religious? How many of your 35% were religious? How many of your 35% also prayed? How many of your 35% did not pray? How many of your 35% were religiophobes? Zing. Good comeback Andy. But you forgot to ask who they prayed to. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Two very good threads for that Stupid things I have done - by Ron Crazy stories from the old days - can't remember who started the thread. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. Do you mind clarifying this? I believe that currently under the FAA regs anybody can teach anyone to pack and therefore it is fine providedthe student jumps their own pack job. I can obviously see that the students teaching students is not the best way to learn. BTW I have no argument that a rigger or properly supervised packer should pack 'commercial' rigs. 11. The interesting aspect of the amputee's are that it is indisputable and not subject to error. Many times in history (even with modern technology) people have been mistakenly declared dead. What is the difference between the apparently dead person and revives with no prayer and the person who does? I think that belief has a very strong influence on humans. Whether the belief is that God, Allah or the Cookie monster is healing you doesn't appear to make much difference. The end result is that it sometimes appears to work for certain illnesses. 12. USPA currency rules for students are 30 days (but this does not always mean redoing the full ground course) If you are planning on going to the US consider dong AFF as far more dz's offer AFF. If you go to a dz with a free bunkhouse (like Skydive the Farm in Georgia) the costs of AFF are offset by the lower living costs. I have been told that it is best to get your A license, to minimise the impact of training cross-over. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  14. Rental, tandem, and club owned gear require thorough inspections every 3 months (with reserve inspection/repack every 6th), while privately owned require one inspection every 12 months (including reserve inspection/repack).* Personally, I think this system works great, and I don't see any problems with it. *Edit: All of these inspections (and repacks) have to be done by a rigger. The inspections include everything from harness metal parts and webbing, to line attachment points, deployment system etc. It sounds like quite a good system. Thanks for the detail. 15. Dave had explained about the high rate of descent further up the thread. I now understand why you would want to not be in full flight too early. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. What is up with the FAA suddenly dropping a comment on every second skydiving related "incident"? Either I haven't been paying attention, or they are starting to be more vocal. But on subject without video/pics it didn't happen. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  17. The issue is that some people have very little understanding of physics. My pet peaves are the people who clap on landing and the people who start praying out loud as you come in to land (only exception to this is me praying when landing in a skydiving plane of course). I wouldn't be surprised if she thinks that turbulence is something that a pilot can see and fly around (like potholes in a road). 18. That often helps. My in-laws had no idea what the skydiving my wife did was like. They finally visited the DZ and relaxed quite a bit. They said it looked much safer than they imagined. Whuffos pretty much think we spend our weekends drag racing with death.

  20. Rental gear can be a problem. In practise on a dz if you rent gear and are not an AFF student, on a busy day you will probably find that AFF students get priority on equipment. This means that if you have packed rental gear and the equipment is re-allocated then to be compliant it must be repacked (under current US rules). I agree that the introduction of a packing certificate could help in the circumstance you describe. Of course a certificate costs money though as it means that somebody is taking the time to teach you. So then we are discriminating against people who can't afford the packing course. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. To be clear in the US there is no "packers certificate". Hopefully an instructor will chip in with their opinion, but when you are being taught AFF time is limited and they need to focus on the important stuff. My experience of dropzones is that if you hang out on the packing floor and ask questions you can learn to pack even as a non-jumper. If you go that route it is all about building relationships at the dz and that takes time. It is probably 20 or 30 years since your first jump course included packing. Some of the older jumpers here had to learn to pack for their first jump course (from memory Airtwardo and Wendy have mentioned something along these lines). 22. He wants to ride in NYC, why would you need a 600CC bike in NYC? If I lived in NYC.....god I wished I lived in NYC....and worked there I would rock the Jet Black Vespa no problem! They are comfortable, stable, hold their value and the well educated world traveler long legged flat bellied, perky boobied hotties dig the Vespa! And it is frugal with respect to gas consumption. The Spider works in cities for well...you can buy it in a slush o matic and it has reverse gear doesn't take much parking and you just sit on it. It also has a pretty smart computer with traction control as well as stability control. Add to it that it's very stable on uneven roads, NYC roads are shit, and it would work....but parking it is a bitch. OR you can buy a very nice second hand 250 to start or if you are on the heavier side a 500. But please make sure you spend money on good gear to keep you safe. Shah while I was kidding about it being gay. You are right that the smaller bikes/scooters are more practical in the city. 23. Thanks for the informative post Dave. I can see that why you may not want to release brakes to early on an HP canopy. For what it is worth the full sequence that is detailed in the article is Chest strap, leg straps, then RDS then brakes. 24. A two way routine that I was shown and like is Star, sidebody, cat, sidebody, star. I realise this is a little boring for the person laying base, but it forces you to actively fly around the person. If my description isn't clear ask WayneFlorida as he showed it to me.
