  7. I seriously cut back on eating fast food a couple years ago, but I think this is a good reason to start frequenting McDonald's again! _Pm http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-shonest19dec19,0,4976511.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines Customer gets bag of cash instead of bagel at Weston McDonald's Ken Kaye Staff Writer Posted December 19 2003 When Janice Meissner pulled into a McDonald's drive-thru in Weston for a quick breakfast of a bagel and Diet Coke, she noticed the food bag seemed "super heavy." She immediately opened it up and discovered hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in a zippered bag. It turned out to be the restaurant's bank deposit money, served up like a Big Mac and an order of fries. McDonald's officials, who wouldn't say exactly how much was involved, said the deposit was placed in a food bag as a security procedure to make it less conspicuous before it was taken to the bank. They said it was errantly left too close to the drive-thru window last week. "Someone didn't check twice before sending it out the window, obviously," said Beth Plotkin, McDonald's marketing manager for Florida, based in Tampa. Meissner, who had just dropped off her 5-year-old daughter, Megan, at pre-school, was momentarily befuddled about what to do. "I'm sweating at this point," said Meissner, 38, of Weston, a mother of three. "I'm thinking, `This a trap.' And then there was the good angel, bad angel thing." She didn't debate for long. She backed up her minivan to the pickup window -- and the employee who handed her the bag. "I said, `Do you want to know what was in this bag?'" Meissner recalled. "She turned white as a ghost. She didn't realize the money was missing yet. She thanked me. And that was that." Well, that wasn't quite that. Meissner called her father, Walter Shields, also of Weston, to tell him about the restaurant's gaffe. "She was shaking like the devil, what with all that money, when she called me," said Shields. While Meissner didn't think she deserved any reward, her father thought she did. So he returned to the McDonald's, in Weston Lakes Plaza, at Saddle Club and Indian Trace roads, to make sure the managers knew of his daughter's good deed. He said he was disappointed the McDonald's employees didn't immediately offer her at least a free hamburger. On Thursday, McDonald's officials said they would send Meissner a thank-you letter and $50 in gift certificates. "She is a great customer of ours. We not only thank her for her patronage, but we thank her for her honesty and integrity," said Mario Castillo, the restaurant manager. Meissner said she has no regrets about her decision. "I would hope most people would return the money," she said. 8. Yay! Congratulations Nathan and Lisa! Yeah...four weddings out of CSC this year? I definitely think there's something in the Hinckley water. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
  9. I love Canada. I love my Canadian husband, AndyMan. Tim Horton's doughnuts are indeed much better than Dunkin Donuts, BUT... Krispy Kreme kicks BOTH Tim Horton's and Dunkin Donuts asses. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
  10. No problem! I trust most American travelers not to act like asses...I think a few spoil it for the rest of America. Guilty by association, as it were. Oh...bring lots of Immodium AD. Don't drink the water. Fresh fruits opened right in front of you, eaten straight from the peel or shell are generally safe. Have you been to the Philippines? I'm sure a lot of the same basic travel rules for foods apply... (Did I mention how jealous I am? I'm drooling just thinking about the food...) And mosquito repellent...somehow any kind of repellent never seems to help me, but it can't hurt. I always return with large welts on my arms and legs, but that might be because I usually go in the rainy season, and I stay in my father's hometown on an orchard. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
  11. Newton, KS! Then we lived in Wichita for about a year. After that, we moved to Knoxville, TN when I was five. Now I'm in Chicago...the wanderlust is strong. Next on the list is Toronto, I think.
  12. You silly white people. I'm Thai-American and even though I grew up mostly American, I have all of the cultural practices ingrained in me. Both my parents are Thai, but I was born in Kansas and raised in Tennessee. How's that for a combination?! What you heard about feet and heads is sorta right. It's especially disrespectful to touch your elders on the head. If you're close friends with someone or if they're little kids, you can touch their heads, but it's still kind of frowned upon. Feet are considered to be the lowest and dirtiest part of your body, therefore it is extremely disrespectful if you point your feet at anybody or anything. Do not EVER step over anybody (like if they're sitting on the floor, which is not uncommon). If you have to walk between two people, bend at the waist and lower your head to lower your stature. It's all about respect, and you'll find that in most Asian countries. When visiting temples, don't wear shorts, and take off your shoes before you go in (there will be several signs for this and shoe racks available, anyway). And when going through the door, don't step on the doorframe, step over it. I have no idea where this came from, but that's what I was told as a kid. Yeah, we love our king. Don't dis him. Even I love the Thai king, and I grew up here. He's a super neat and smart guy who went to Harvard, composes jazz, and is big into social welfare projects. Phuket. Pooh-ket. The "k" sound is actually closer to a "g" sound, but I won't get into that. I was trying to teach AndyMan some Thai words last night, and I gave up because there are certain sounds in the Thai language that American English speakers can't produce. If I think of anything else, I'll post again. Enjoy your travels! I'm jealous! I haven't been back in about 4-5 years. _Pm Edited for minor mistakes... __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

  14. Today I got confirmation that my brand new custom MirageG3 is in the works, all paid for by my Sugar, AndyMan! AND he gave me his reserve because he downsized his container. Then I got even better news when I talked to my father tonight. First I asked him what he wanted for Xmas, and of course he gave me the standard answer of, "Oh, you don't have to get me anything expensive. Something small and fun...whatever." Then I asked, "Did Mom tell you what I wanted for Christmas?" He replied, "No, what?" I have to preface the rest of the story by saying that my parents aren't really happy that Andy and I skydive, but they're coming around to accepting the fact that we do it. The best way to get new gear from whuffo parents was to play the safety card... Me: "Oh, I want something for skydiving." Dad: "Skydiving?! What do you want?" Me: "Well, it's an automatic activation device, so if I ever get knocked out by hitting the plane, a freefall collision, or for any other reason, this will automatically deploy my parachute for me and save my life. Hopefully I'll never have to use it." Dad: "Oh! Okay, sure! How much?" Blah blah blah...I tell him the details and explain that I have everything but a main parachute, because of course we need TWO parachutes to jump, and I don't have the most important one. Again...Dad says, "Oh! Okay, how much?" Then, "Yeah, I'll buy those for you! Go ahead and order them!" I thought he was kidding, but apparently he was totally serious. So I'm getting a CYPRES 2 and a Sabre2 190 for Christmas!!! AndyMan is more than jealous, I think. _Pm __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

A little background story can be found here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=312185#312185 Anyway, pretty soon after our first date (or hookup...whatever you want to call it), I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. It took him a little longer to figure it out, but he eventually came around!
