  1. What lead you to post this in Speakers Corner? Since it's skydiving related, perhaps you ought to have posted it in one of the other forums, instead? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. Non profits, if well organized are just groups of individuals with similar interests. If poorly organized, they can be shams to sucker in people who don't know what's going on. On balance, I'd rather have the land be owned by an individual than an organization. I trust people a lot more easily than I trust organizations with fluid membership, officers, and by-laws. I guess what I'm saying is that if I owned the cliff, I'd know that it would be jumpable. Otherwise, I have no guarantees. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Yes, jumping off many cliffs in Norway is legal. Trespassing (i.e. most non-cliff jumps) is illegal, there as here, and there are a few cliffs where jumping is banned (usually for good reasons, like rescue helicopters starting rockslides). For more info see: http://www.BASEKjerag.com. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. What if they _were_ the craft? Or they were artificial intelligence built by some organic life form specifically for the purpose of self-replicating and exploring? I don't really think anyone would _specifically_ want to come here. I mean, why would they? Unless they're like us. How excited would we be if we found a spot in the sky that was pouring transmissions into space? But why wouldn't they just be methodically mapping everything, and stumble on us? Or be random, space based, wanderers, or anything in between? Saying it's unlikely because we wouldn't do it that way (whichever way you can hypothesize) does not, in my view, make sufficient allowance for the alienness of, well, aliens. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. That's a fairly pessimistic view. I'm guessing that BASE jumpers will own jumpable objects within the next ten years, even without any being freed up by the government. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Heck, yeah. Isn't that the eventual goal? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. I believe the one you've labelled "Rusty" is actually Phil, another Aussie. Dallas and Rusty started jumping with Jason and his group, but they had arrived at different times, and I believe had actually met here for the first time. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Sweet! This just gets better and better...
  9. Forty Two is the ultimate answer. Clearly you're not geeky enough yet. Question: What do you get when you multiply six by nine? Answer: Forty two. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. Even better, in my view. Many of the sites I'd want to jump would be of little value to developers, ranchers, or loggers, so they'd go cheap. And if we could buy them, we'd have a much better way to insure future access. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Russel Video

The opening is pretty much going to be the same "hardness" on the gear no matter what position you deploy in. It'll generally be less "hard" on your body if you deploy in a head high position, because, as Manbird points out, you "whip" less. On his second jump (done from a sitting position) Russel was so head low that he whipped hard enough to kick himself in the face. His solution was to try dropping from a hanging exit, so that he'd just stay head high the whole time. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. I was more thinking that when folks want to keep snowmobiles/4wd whatever off of certain lands, their first step is usually to move the lands out of BLM (allows BASE) control and into NPS (bans BASE) hands. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. Why? Perhaps their values would be different than ours. Maybe they are just naturally wanderers who are forever "passing by". Heck, maybe they look like astronomical phenomenon, from our point of view. I'm not advancing any particular theory here, just trying to point out that aliens would be, well, _alien_. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. In my experience talking to land managers and the folks who lobby them, things pretty much boil down to two sides--use the land, and leave the land alone. The "leave the land alone" folks tend to want to ban the installation of climbing anchors, the use of motorized vehicles, and almost anything else that amounts to human use of the land, including BASE. The "use the land" folks tend to have a more lenient view. I know that's a generalization, but it's a good working generalization. I doubt very much that a democratic administration would be more friendly to BASE jumpers than a republican one. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. It matter to some other folks too. Specifically, I think that an environmentalist is going to make it less likely that I'll ever be able to legally jump in a National Park in the US. If they want to ban snowmobiles, forget BASE. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Russel Video

I've put some video of Russel up on my web page. I'm currently uploading a higher quality version to skydivingmovies.com. I think that his stowed jump on Monday was probably the coolest BASE jump I've ever seen. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. I've put a short video of some of Russel's jumps on my web page. I'll try to upload a higher quality version to skydivingmovies.com. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. Why? I mean, what if they live for billions of years? Slower than light travel wouldn't be a real big impediment to someone with a lifespan like that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. Doing aerials is _far_ from being a sign of skill as a BASE jumper. And not doing aerials is hardly an indicator that you suck. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. Honestly, it sounds to me like you're in way over your head, and potentially about to do something really foolish. I'd recommend contacting some paragliders for advice on ground launches. I'd probably also learn to do ground launches with wings intended for such before trying to launch anything else. And I'd definitely practicing kiting and launching from a gently sloping grassy hill before I tried launching off a building. Slow down there. You could really get hurt trying some of that stuff. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Perhaps McDaisey? I knew someone would have a name for this before long. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. You don't happen to have a photo of Russel in his wheelchair, or better yet one that shows both him jumping or about to jump, and his empty wheelchair somewhere in the background, do you? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. Come on, John. _Every_ thread in this forum is somewhere between 50 and 100% re-hash of the same old discussion. If you can post repeated discussions about gun control, in endless variations, Kev can post his own endless variations as well. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. Actually, I was hoping that someone who supported his candidacy would chime in and explain why they support him, or at least why these things aren't as bad as they look. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. Now that it's a workday, and the usual suspects are online, I'm going to bump this up. Anyone want to discuss? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
