Don't limit yourself to those two canopies. If you can demo more, go for it. I used a Sabre2 when I was a student, and it seemed strange to try out another canopy. I eventually tried out a Pilot and I've had it for about 260 jumps now. Mine is loaded at 1.3. It is very responsive so you can have a lot of fun with it at altitude. You can pack it to open exactly how YOU want it. The flare is good. You won't get much at all out of the front risers, but that doesn't matter much for your first canopy. I've been in love with it since I've had it. Try one out if you can!

HA! I love Mirage. Not afraid to say what they believe.

exiting a small low wing aircraft

She said it was pretty tricky. I'm not sure exactly how she did it, but I think she said it was hard to keep her handles clear. -

I know someone that used to jump out of a bonanza regularly. I guess getting out the door was the hardest part, but after that you can just slide right off the wing. A lot of low wing, single engine planes have a door that opens into the wind, so it would be tricky. -

Yeah I was talking with a MSgt there and he said it's possible for me to get hired and to send my resume. I guess I would be the only Staff there, so it isn't looking too likely. He said if they really needed people I could get it. The current job description is for TSgt, but 1 rank up or down. -

Nope. I've spoken with the Air Force guys that are in charge and they filled me in pretty well. I just want the lower level perspective. -

Does anyone here instruct at the Academy? I'm looking at applying for that special duty soon (currently a SSGT), and I'm wondering what to expect if I get the job. I've been in touch with the folks in charge, but wanted to see what it's like from the lower level coaches. What's the day-to-day like? -
Here's a crappy video of someone landing backwards. It's at the end. Apparently when you land backwards, the canopy doesn't flare itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxBwM5rH7sc

Haha, it's all good. You posted 5/6 great songs in my opinion. Hope all is well

Putting up the Adam Lambert version doesn't offend me as a Christian, but it sure does as a Johnny Cash fan I thought that Everlast did a great cover of Folsom Prison Blues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmt6OyRqb8A

New, fun, weird, different Exits.
flashvortx replied to ridestrong's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We had 4 rows of 4, with 1 row laying down. What we did was have the first 12 people get into position with everyone else close to the pilot. Once the 12 were ready, the last 4 got into position quickly and rolled right out. We had a camera guy following us out and I guess he got launched out. The pilot was cool with it. -

The 12-way got about 5 good rotations and the 16-way almost got around once but flung people off. They stayed horizontal pretty much the whole time. -

We launched a successful 12-way tube, then a somewhat successful 16-way tube out the back of the Skyvan at Chicks Rock. Biggest so far? Your exit looked pretty awesome -
You can't go a weekend day at Lodi without multiple tandems walking on or just straight up standing on your lines. It's so frustrating there!

Another stupid newbie gear question...
flashvortx replied to Nightingale's topic in Gear and Rigging
I've had a non-collapsible PC for about 250 out of my 280 jumps under a Pilot 168 at 1.2. Can anyone make a good argument for me getting a collapsible PC when I'm not currently doing anything requiring more performance? -
from my understanding of the skyhook design(which is basic) if the pilot chute creates more drag then the main at any time during the deployment then the skyhook will disconnect from the reserve bridal Is it possible for a however many inch pilot chute to produce more drag than a XXX sq. ft. canopy? That is the way the system works, but I think it only works like that if you have a baglock/no main inflated.

Why would anybody jump from a perfectly good airplane
flashvortx replied to BHogg's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That answer is just as annoying to hear as the question -
You read it right, DSE. I guess coaches aren't supposed to teach new guys now? I guess I'll just limit my teaching to people like you. You need any wingsuit coaching? I've got 10 jumps with a Birdman suit if you need any help

The Parachute and its Pilot is a great one for a new guy. I started reading it after I had been experimenting with my canopy and it made me realize how close I had come to having a few inadvertent malfunctions. For instance, when stalling your canopy, don't bring the toggles up as fast as they'll go. I got lucky on that one and a few others. The book starts off with the basics and then goes into stuff that will be way over your head, but hang on to it and you'll use that info later on down the road.

Anytime anyone yells at you, tell them to fuck off, or just smile and nod (whichever fits your personality). A very basic rule to effectively influencing people is to praise in public and criticize in private. This person apparently sucks at doing that. She was right to let you know that she saw a safety issue, she just did it in the worst possble way. Pulling low probably won't hurt anyone but yourself, so the decision, in my opinion, is entirely up to you. I teach new guys to keep it above 3 at least until they have dealt with some sort of mal. I haven't had a cutaway, but I've had a close call or two, so with my responses to those situations, I'm comfortable with pulling lower if I want to. The same seems to apply to you.

17 year old turns in at Start Skydiving!
flashvortx replied to dbcooperfan's topic in Safety and Training
My parents had to sign a release when I joined the Air Force. That was a huge decision that I made halfway through high school. People under 18 are capable of making important decisions. Parents just need to make sure that the kid is making an informed and mature decision. -
I saw the question asked a few times but not answered. What was going on during freefall? I see a gorilla exit followed by flailing while staring only at the ground. Were you 100% sure that the other guy was not near you when you deployed? I only saw him once after you broke up.
