How are they going to collect? Are there assets that can be attached? I'm a newbie, so maybe everybody knows this answer already except me. Sorry if it is redundant. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Dead Marine's father ordered to pay protesters' legal costs
Southern_Man replied to lost_n_confuzd's topic in Speakers Corner
So, it appears what you want is for one party to have freedom of speech (say in criticising Obama in our example) but to place limits on what the other party might say in refutation (you can't call the other speaker a racist). Man, that to me is a limitation on free speech. Who would decide what is allowable debate and who would enforce those rules? Correct me if I am wrong, otherwise I think we are just going around in circles. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

Dead Marine's father ordered to pay protesters' legal costs
Southern_Man replied to lost_n_confuzd's topic in Speakers Corner
And if somebody does that, incorrectly and too often, it will be seen as the cheap, diversionary tactic that it is and the person crying "racism" will be discredited and the original speaker will gain in public acceptance and approval. This is part of the free marketplace of ideas. Enter it, compete vigorously! If the market deems your ideas worthy then they will gain acceptance. If you are afraid of the cost of entering that marketplace then that is on you, not on your opponents. All this has nothing to do w/ freedom of speech, which is freedom from government interference such as fines, imprisonment, or silencing. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Dead Marine's father ordered to pay protesters' legal costs

Just so I make sure we are talking about the same thing, can you tell me what you think my point is? That you do not think PC in this country goes against free speech No, politically correctness is not against free speech. Being called a racist, or intolerant, or whatever else may be part of the cost of engaging in the public arena of free speech. If your arguments are gooed enough than such attempts will be seen as hollow. If your arguments really are racist or intolerant than they deserve to be called such. Until the government is arresting, silencing, or fining you for that speech then you are still free to utter it. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

I've listened to him, and I pretty much agree with you. With the exception that he is an ideologue. I tend toward libertarianism so I should be sympathetic to some of his views (although his delivery is not good) but he tosses these aside to become a political hack for Republicans when it is convenient. I find him neither entertaining nor insightful. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

It is tricky because there are two (at least two) pretty important and cherished ideas here that are in conflict with each other. Rights aren't absolute and where the line is drawn in any particular case like this is very hazy and subject to endless debate. I'm not sure where the rights of the individual to practice their religion and to raise their children as they see fit should end and where the state's power to protect the vulnerable should begin. I know ambiguity doesn't play well in SC. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Is dating dead? Is hooking up the new dating?
Southern_Man replied to jheadley's topic in The Bonfire
I think its your age. Maybe where you hang out, too. I don't hang out at bars so chances of a drunken hook-up are pretty small. I date. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

This is the interesting thing to me. Just as almot everybody believe they are of above average intelligence, I'm sure we'd all like to think we are in the minority that would refuse. I'm enough of a rule-follower to suspect I would be one of the ones that would follow orders. Not particularly something to be proud of in this case but a matter of truth and self-awareness. I grew up in Virginia when we had the infamous Byrd textbooks on Virginia history which basically taught how slaves and Native Americans were much better off being subjugated. Also, not mentioned are what aura or warnings of impending seizure does to person have, and how long is the warning. ( i.e. long enough to pull? ) There is a neurologist skydiver who posts occasionally. I was hoping he'd chime in with an opinion. Maybe he still will. But this is getting off topic. I'm not a neurologist but have spent a good bit of time working w/ people w/ seizures. You are right that many people have a pre-monition or feelings right before a seizure starts. This differs from person to persona and even from seizure to seizure. Might be enough, might not be. If you were counting on this to give you enough time to pull I think that would be an extremely foolish decision. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Private aircraft makes emergency landing on beach
Southern_Man replied to regulator's topic in The Bonfire
Not for the jogger. I'm a runner, I agree that it is absolutely idiotic to wear headphones while running. Although you would think the beach would be safer than the road. Anyway, he probably wouldn't have needed much time to take effective evasive action. Be interesting to know what part of the plane hit him and if he tried to avoid it at all. The Beginning of the Social Security Meltdown
Southern_Man replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
You are dead on about the stock market. Gates certainly benefitted from a head-start in life. His father was an attorney and he attended private school where he had access to computers, mentors, and programming time at a time when that was quite rare. This is detailed in Malcolm Galdwell's Outliers, and many other places, I am sure. Doesn't mean he didn't work hard for his success or that he doesn't deserve it, but it is bit misleading to say he built his wealth from nothing. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
So how's your "Steak and a BJ Day" Going?
Southern_Man replied to turtlespeed's topic in The Bonfire
Made up as a male counterpart to Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day women want chocolate, flowers, someone special, wooing, and romance. On their holidays, guys just want...... Both sexes probably experience tremendous amounts of frustration and disappointment. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
