HOLY SHIT. just did my first tandem. and it was indescribable. Exited the plane at 15,300, we did a perfect backflip out of the plane. id atltitude checks every thousand feet or so (wasnt required but i figured it couldnt hurt), and i pulled at 5500, chute opened perfect, i took the toggles, did some fun turns, and we slid in perfect. . . . .WHOA, is all i can say. needless to say im hooked for life. now im saving every penny (LITERALLY) for AFF. THIS is what needs to be done country wide, if you guys want us EMS people to save your rigs. Most of us in the field dont know enough, or any other way than the way we were originally taught, which for me(and everyone I know) was, if its in the way cut it off. They arent going to come to you, you MUST take the initiative and go to them and say "look, we dont want to get in the way and tell you how to do your job, but if you do this. . . .insert technique here. . . . " i bet youd get a pretty positive response from ALOT of departments. It is a big deal about erosion! If you notice the tree's are about the only vegitation there. If the tree's die that they cut down then the root system dies and the cliff will erode. That exit point will erode to were its not jumpable. BTW I am an erosion expert and know just a little bit about it! No offense to you at all, but a 4 year old could put that together, I mean its not rocket science, you take what holds the soil in place away, and guess what, its gonna erode, if anyone cant see that, then I feel for them. That was the biggest issue i thought of. the other thing you might want to do is show people at the DZ how to effectively employ said technique, since MOST accidents happen at a DZ or somewhere with other skydivers present, and since they are the true FIRST responders, and the people who will most likely know the most about said rig. If they could safely extricate a diver out of his/her rig before EMS got there then it would eliminate the problem of EMS cutting a rig. Just a thought, im not sure how practical it really is, but it might be somethign to consider. One question i have though, on the treatment of injured skydivers, how long did/does it take to remove the rig, while maintaining c-spine precautions? According to our protocols down here, with a trauma alert (which im assuming most of these cases will qualify as) we only have 10 minutes from arrival to the time we have to be on the road. See as i was reading all this, this scenario popped in my head. what if you have someone who crashes BADLY but isnt killed, say is unconsious/ unresponsive. Obviously someone will call 911 ASAP (at least id hope to god they do) and the fire department and EMS will be en route. you will only have a small window of time to work before you are pushed aside and out of the way by the responders. I agree that preserving the scene will provide a wealth of information to an experienced person, but I can promise you that the first thing a responder will do is to take cervical spine precautions, log roll the victim on his back, check the ABC's and start cutting off clothes, the rig, and whatever is covering the body, to expose everything as fast and efficiently as possible to see what they are really working with. Hence destroying whatever evidence would have helped figure out what happened. (Im basing all this on the scneario that the victim never wakes up and is able to tell you what exactly happens) Now im not saying that you shouldnt take as many possilbe pictures as you can until EMS personnel get there but when they do, you have to let them do their jobs, and take care of the victim. Im not sure if this was your point but I wanted to clarify just for my own sake. you might be close enough to the farm to benefit from their a license package deal. 1800 will get you your a license. its in georgia close to to the alabama line. you could get aff done in a weekend or two and then come back and jump when you can. i go out there and camp for the weekend and jump. might be worth checking into.
