Sounds like about a 4 or 5 story building to me... I don't know any skydivers that wouldn't jump off a 4 or 5 story building. F$$K no - dude - BASE Jumpers MAYBE - but not SD One night when I was doing some volunteer work in the Emergency Dept. we had this guy come in that had "fallen" from a 3rd story balcony. Both of his femurs were fractured and were sticking out the middle of his thighs. They both had dirt and grass in them from when they stuck into the ground. He was in so much shock he wasn't even feeling any pain, that and he was full of morphine . Anyway it wasn't a pretty sight. and that was only 30=40 ft. initial posts, from witnesses i think, are saying he was 70-90 ft up in a tree with no branches below 20 feet. yeah you're not hitting the ground with as much force, but trust me, i think id rather just fall to the damn ground vs falling that far through a tree, too many pokey things. Just for reference, some EMTs use the formula that any fall from more then 3 times the height of the patient is considered 'severe'. Using that formula, anything between 15 and 20 would qualify as a 'severe' fall for most people. and add the fact that youre getting the shit knocked outta you on the way by branches, yeah. . . youre looking at a bad day. Deland is a very large airport, and they don't seem to mind sharing a good bit of that space with the DZ for landing areas. More typical is a smaller (than Deland) dedicated landing area, with lots of open areas nearby you can land in if you need to. Everyone tries to land in the 'regular' landing area, so that's where your traffic will be concentrated, and where a big canopy and higher opening altitude will help out. There's a similar phenomenon that happens on a smaller scale, which is within the 'regluar' landing area, there will be an even greater concentration of jumpers landing in the quadrant nearest to the hanger/packing area/runway crossing. That's where the saying comes from, "Better to walk 300 ft. then to be carried 30 ft.", meaning that you take your chances trying to land close, and may need an ambulance one day because of it. Land out in the sticks, and you'll have a long, lonley walk back, but at least you'll still be able to walk. yeah, that was my point. ive only jumped at deland but visited a few others and thats exactly what happens, everyone trys to get as close to the beer line, or hanger as they physically can. id rather walk a few yards than risk hitting/being hit by someone or something Thanatos340(on landing rounds)-- Landing procedure: Hand all the way up, Feet and Knees Together and PLF soon as you get bitch slapped by a planet.

Well, he could always spot & pull over the town... that IS a good idea, i mean he is used to jumping fixed things, dont want to change too many variables at once right? i mean a new canopy, a huuuge open field, day time, not having to run for your life, and jumping from something that is moving may very well just bee to much to handle! i say you track over the city and pull. to keep at least something the same, since you re used to landing in shit

BUUUUUURN! Thanatos340(on landing rounds)-- Landing procedure: Hand all the way up, Feet and Knees Together and PLF soon as you get bitch slapped by a planet.

i could be wrong here, but i know where i learned at, deland, had a totally separate and HUUUUUGE area dedicated to students and low number jumpers. youd MAYBE have 2 other people land in that area on a load, and idk how big it was but the area was HUUUGE. youd land nowhere near each other unless you really tried. so if they have that id stick there for a good number of jumps till you get used to the skydiving side of things. just a thought
