  1. I'm not sure how being exposed as a fraud is "winning" ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  2. Ah yes, because the value of a literary work is entirely dependant on the real life of the author instead of what is contained in the text. :\ ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  3. Inception was both amazing and disappointing... sooooo many things they got completely wrong about the dream experience...but the idea was lovely, it was nice to see lucid dreaming get some mainstream exposure (even as silly as some of the explanation of the 'tech' were) and it was a decent action movie regardless As far as fiction no one does dreaming as well as lovecraft, even if his style is somewhat passe what nearly everything fictional seems to get completely wrong is the continual ties to "reality". Where is the real imagination? You can do, be, go anything anywhere in dreamtime. Why would you only wander in the fields you know? wall of text follows, some of the more inspired text of the 20th century...(IMO) http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/sk.asp ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  4. I'm skeptical.. the video angles are rather iffy for someone who is really attempting to document an event, and the power requirements to move wings that large fast enough to be effective would be pretty bulky for the size of his harness. I also have real doubts about the wingspan to weight ratio...his body mass is going to be significantly more than an 'upscaled bird' so his wings should be significantly larger as well... instead they are fairly proportional to many birds.... I say fake. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  5. all my life (since 8-9) it interferes with waking life often.. dreamland is more interesting.. and when waking life approaches the same level, I fear waking up... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  6. All the real fun stopped when the corporate tools bought it out, but it has never been particularly relevant, just a decent information collection point. It's always up to the individual to find the value. If you are judging a physical activity from it's internet forum you are; very naive about the internet in general, a fool, or both. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  7. when you show me where I've set a requirement for "physical" proof I'll perhaps pay attention to you again. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  8. clearly you are not a student of philosophy (or any other intellectual endeavor) ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  9. once again a lovely contribution to the discussion... are you vying for the title of who can mangle the quote function most? ah.. I get it.. you are having your own internal joke that apparently no one cares about but you... fortunately I'm not participating in YOUR useless discussion, I was responding to Scooby, and in context my use of the words evidence and proof are perfectly valid. Are you getting enough oxygen lately? that level of giddy usually comes with O2 deprivation. while this forum has often been overly moderated I again find myself wishing mods would ban those who continually post that which has nothing to do with the actual discussion taking place, it would help restore the level of intellectual discussion that once took place here. I suppose it's ridiculous to expect much from dizzy.com anymore... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  10. I can see where this is a problem for some. For others, who have been trained and practice a discipline, they have a framework with a common vocabulary that allows them to describe their observations in meaningful terms. Can you stick a gauge on it? No. Doesn't mean those observations aren't valid, and significant. Valid and significant as to the usefulness of a given discipline to that individual? absolutely. Valuable and significant to the existence of God aka the truth of the mythological components of any discipline/religion? Not at all. No matter how significant or influential the practice of any discipline is in an individuals life, such practice has absolutely no bearing and offers no evidence to support the existence of a supreme being/force or offer support for one mythology over another. Few would dispute the usefulness to the individual (or society as a whole) of christian beliefs (for example as its adherents are the most vocal in this forum) but that doesn't offer any proof whatsoever as to the existence of God, Jesus or any miraculous event described in the Bible. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  11. Exactly, the personal experiences are the observations. For some, those observations lead to the conclusion of ultimate responsibility - you are responsible for what happens to you in life. Period. The problem with "personal experiences" as "observations" is the complete lack of objectivity or external repetition. It doesn't meet the broadest definition of an experiment as an individual can claim any "observation" (and therefore build any conclusion at all) at any time without fear of refutation or cross examination. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  12. This is alot easier than anyone makes it out to be.. First Cause. The problem starts the minute you try to tie it to any religious belief. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

  14. Not anymore. Now he'd just pitch a half formed idea to a team to take over and slap his name on it. It would start off fairly decent, but quickly become predictable and trite and end in a let down. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  15. everyone is entitled to their opinion ofcourse but that doesnt mean they are an expert or know what they are talking about necessarily. when compared to every other Ifly facility, he is dead on target. Orlando was great.... 10 years ago.... Now? its in dire need of a refit. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  16. A whole lot of single guy skydivers just said "OUCH" at the same time. indeed, although I'd say that statement (good ones already taken) applies just as well to wuffo women ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  17. I'd easily pay more for baby free flights. It's not an option offered by any airline. baring that, screaming children should simply be muzzled until the flight is over. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  18. nope... just back it down to streaming only... if the selection gets to the point I'm not watching it then will see... I see new releases in the theater if I'm interested, so if it wasnt interesting enough to see in the theater I dont care when it reaches DVD. Other than that I use it to watch TV shows long past their original air times. it gets annoying when I 'catch up' but atm I have other series to watch while I wait for the next season to appear. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  19. You wont find a real alternative to Netflicks, the studios realized the could squeeze vastly more money from the previously ignored streaming market. by 2013 there will likely be decent competitors but they will absolutely cost twice as much (or more) as Netflixs does now, the only reason Netflixs hasnt had an immediate price increase is due to existing contracts (but many titles no longer exist on streaming due to an increase in Netflixs user base that Sony is saying invalidates existing contracts.) basically the easy access is over unless you are willing to pay a higher premium for it (in time or money) ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  20. like not Gabe Matta at SDAZ ? (for example) Zoom Zoom! Bitches! much less clichish than 'atmonauti' ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

  24. I see it as exactly the opposite, in many ways Facebook IS my phonebook. It all hits my phone, and because of that its easier to FB most of the people I interact with than it is to email or text (I've sent maybe 500 texts in the last couple of years because of FB.) I remember life prior to cell phones or even call waiting as well, but the fact is "your world" was significantly smaller then because of the limited contact. Its very analogous to life before cars... 50 miles away was along way to go on a horse so you didnt without good reason, now many people drive more than 50 miles simply to work. Whether it 'waters down' or 'deepens' relationships is entirely up to how you use it. If you were a social butterfly before facebook you still are now, simply to a broader group of people. You can sit at a bar and tell a complete stranger your life story, or be FB friends with 1000 people, none of whom really 'know you". All technology is a tool, and how you use it determines it value. But ultimate as a tool (when used effectively) it only expands your life. If you get a perverse pride from cutting and acre of lawn with a swingblade, by all means continue, but its undeniable that you can better your quality of life with a powered mower. Today, in the course of about an hour over spare moments (mostly while I'm sitting through a meeting I really dont NEED to be in, but have to for political reasons) I: read reviews from several friends on a couple of albums that are coming out tomorrow, Learned a friend who has been unemployed just got a great job, another is working on a dream project, someone else is engaged, watched several training videos from one of the VRW teams I follow, caught up on multiple news stories from a huge variety of interests, all preculled, perused and approved by people I trust in their fields, checked out (and ordered two prints) a couple dozen photographs from multiple photographers, chatted laughed and argued with several people over a variety of topics, added a college professor to my friends list (which I honestly love.. I have nearly all my favorite college mentors as friends, and it has resulted in a free 'continuing education' via the interaction none of us would have time for otherwise) scheduled a date later in the week, and a beer tasting tonight, watched a community celebrate and grieve, saw his family respond could I have done all that via text, email, phone and web? absolutely... but the time involved to do so, the headaches in managing that many interfaces and accounts would be a job in and of itself. Has facebook become an integral part of my life? absolutely, in the same way my phone, car and computer have. I have (and could still) learn to live without all of them, but my variety and depth of daily experience would shrink drastically. There is always a certain distrust with any service that "sells" my participation as a marketing scheme (and my entire life is by no means on there) but I can definitely call everyone of the nearly 400 people (apart from the business, band or artistic pages) "Friends" and not "Facebookfriends" which is ultimately what matters. The quality of my relationships has increased at the same time I have added to (mostly by reestablishing old relationships) the quantity. Granted I am and will always be an information junkie, and I'm quite sure something will replace Facebook eventually perhaps Google+ (honestly I think that's unlikely for many reasons, but I believe Google will force FB to adapt.) I will absolutely grant you there are some serious annoyances and adjustment required as with any new tool, the options, variety of use by members (I hate FB games I have real games when needed) lack of documentation and ambient 'noise' level exposure forced on someone new to Facebook makes it seem overwhelming at first, but once you configure it to your needs and learn to use it is easily the single most useful social tool since the internet itself, and ignoring it only narrows your possible relationships, the 'depth' is up to you. "Good fences do make good neighbors." But my neighbors are not my friends, if you're on the other side of my fences you'll never know me at all. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
