Geniuses, Criminals Do Best Work In Their 30's
Zenister replied to JamesNahikian's topic in The Bonfire
really? i pull out the 'nookie' strategy before i go to the Chewbacca defense..more people will probably relate to the 'i had to get laid' reasoning... reads article notes date on birthcertificate wonders if this helps to explain random thoughts i've been having of late.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
i like this alot better. I'm not quite positive on the numbers, but i think the idea is just to have general guidlines. I think the real changes and effects would be felt with new jumpers, an expanded canopy control class at the intial stages (post basic freefall skills, but before licensing) will make the most difference, and here is the level that we can instill the idea that the people flying the 'cool wings' learned the skills they need to survive those wings before they went out and flew them. granted without it being a 'requirement' you will still have egotists thinking they are above it all, but that is an attitude change that most likely formed over years and isnt going to be greatly affected by any level of education no matter how good the materials or teacher.. you can lead the horse.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

be very carefull about equating excessive 'regulation' with 'higher safety standards' since they are not the same thing. but i actually agree very strongly with this, It should be left up to the individual DZs. Supply and demand will then determine which policy best fits the 'temper' of the skydiving community. Some DZ's may have a higher (or lower) acceptable risk level than others, and the jumpers would gravitate towards the one that best fit thier personalities. I've said all along that the people making wingloading decisions should be the ones 'on the ground' who are actually observing the jumpers at thier DZ, not by an overreaching authority from the 'adminosphere' ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

so 2 incidents (that you heard about) out of how many skydives you directly observed being made? and that ratio makes your 'greatest fear' being taken out by another skydiver? there are FAR more things that are likely to injure you skydiving than someone else... somepeoples greatest fear is being bitten by a black widow, even though they arent native to the area they live in, which makes they chances of it happening rather low...but whatever you want to worry about is up to you. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

I think this is the "root cause" of why we disagree. If this is what you believe, I again ask you, where was the uproar when the "A" license pull altitude BSR was changed? I find it interesting that no one is willing to answer that question. we honestly i wasnt around then, and there should have been a good bit more study done before making changes, as i've said already just because you used an incomplete process once and made a good rule doesnt mean its a good standard practice.. also, pull altitudes are not quite so personal as canopy choices and landing styles. I'd imagine that those whos enjoyment of skydiving was primarily defined by how low they could pull have moved on to something less restrictive and more condusive to their particular 'fix'. ie BASE after mandatory rules were emplaced to control thier personal level of risk in a manner that they found to restrictive. i'd also be willing to bet there are a significantly larger number of people who care more about being told what canopies and how they must fly them than there were people who were concerned with an extra 500ft of freefall. they really are very seperate issues, with much different charateristics, no matter how much you wish to tie them together. just as one example: changing pull atltitudes would never 'force' anyone to buy new gear.. Safe practices only allows you to enjoy your freedoms, excessive restriction removes that freedoms complete until you comply. we would arguablly be 'safer' if we strip searched every individual and went thru all cargo before boarding a commercial aircraft. I'm certainly not willing to make that concession for the illusion that allows the average to sleep better at night knowing "something is being done" no matter how inefficient or ineffective ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

just wondering if you'd looked at the numbers to get a rough idea of how small the chance you or another spectator has of being injured by another skydiver is?? canopy education is certainly something everyone could benefit from and should have, but using arguments such as this, and "but what about the children" (which isnt far off from your current one) dont do much to portray the fact that far more people are in control of thier canopies and flying safely than the unfortunate injuries that have happened. does anyone really go to the DZ and look around thinking "that guy could kill me, or that guy, or that guy??" without clear evidence of an impending danger to the majority of participants regulation requiring education is unwarranted. That in no way means we should not develop classes, teach students better from the start and promote further education as you progress in a manner that is less draconian. again without clear evidence of impending doom to the majority.... Freedom is more important than safety. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

wow you get paid to do that?? sounds like that was a fun one to write. Got the whole thing posted somewhere? edit: just read thru all the others too..some interesting ideas i'd like to read as well, but at least a few occasions where the pseudo intellectual bullshit card needs to be throw... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

ah but the fact that the bull wins sometimes is what makes it even...of course they should probably be put out to pasture as a prize, instead we just turn them into leather and steaks.. i honestly believe you should be able to hunt anything you wish...in small numbers, with this spear. if we'd stuck to this rule there'd be far more animals and lots less humans in the first place, which would theoretically solve lots of 'problems' at once. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

since you definitely seem to be the man to ask, what do the physical O2 requirements mean for high altitude wingsuit flight? is it feasible with bottles and does the wingsuit 'work' well enough to be worth the effort & risks at higher altitudes? i've wondered about high altitude wingsuits the instant i got down from my flight ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

what is the proper technique for deploying your pilot chute?
Zenister replied to outofit's topic in Safety and Training
i leave it to someone whos better qualified to speak about it, but isnt "placing" your PC in clean air the basic method of deployment for skysurf dives? i remember watching skysurf students being given extra points for proper 'clean' deployment procedures ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
IIRC the specifics on place of duty and duty uniform are often up to the digression of the local commander so both those requirements are probably pretty flexible.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

and it will survive for a long time after, so its ok to do anything we wish since it only accelerates the time in which the planet does better off without us.. anyone who says that humans dont have a significant impact on our environment both on a local and global scale really needs to get out more...its not hard to see significant changes in some regions in as little as 10 years...that may or may not be part of a larger pattern difficult to perceive in our small timeframe, but there are certainly ways in which we make it more or less severe in its effects on our lives.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

2k is fine, but i'd rather have enough altitude (3.5-4k) to launch an exit then track off before pitching..not really a H&P but its ALOT more fun... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Looking Before Turning / Canopy Pattern
Zenister replied to jumpgod's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
doing multiple S turns on final because you turned to late to make your designated 'target creates an unnessesarily hazardous pattern for everyone behind you, particularly anyone on a canopy faster than yours. This doesnt mean they dont have to be aware of the possiblity of you turning, but if you cant set up a downwind - base - final pattern without having to resort to major S turns that take up a MUCH larger space than a normal straight in approach you need to adjust your patterns 'leg' lengths, and/or land in a less crowded area whenever possible until you can... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -

wow! i'm thinking there is some grand birdling conspiracy going on...the number of people jumping wingsuits lately is really spreading the disease.. ive got one burning a hole in my gear bag again, but with switching to new canopies lately i figure i better stick to single changes at the moment... as soon as my mirage gets repacked i'll make another birdman jump (my beer one at kapowsin) and i'll certainly be down for the NW fun to play with the flock...looks around wonders when dan will want his back... ive only done 5 and ive been tempted to suck it lower, just for the loooong extra seconds of flight, but all the squirlly things to undo, the interesting openings i've was getting not to mention all the great advise i've gotten here and from birdpeople on the ground props to the ManBird convinced me that 5k was good idea for a while yet... by Eloy i hope to have 50-60 birdman jumps i wonder how big the flock will be then?? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

nah a aerie is a nest for high flying predatory type birds (remote mountain peaks, high lone trees. mostly refered to with eagles and hawks.. etc)...an aviary is where you keep your finches and parakeets.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
