  2. The PC launch I saw was durinmg the PIA Expo. Strong Enterprises rep dumped the reserve (to demonstrate the aforementioned reserve flaps). He stood a rig on a table (so it was actually lower than on someone's back) and pulled the silver. The reserve PC launched and flew to FULL bridle stretch. I know that for fact, cause just before he pulled I was wondering if it's gonna do that. The reserve PC's flight was actually 'stopped' when all the bridle length was used (the reserve PC was kind of yanked back since all the bridle slack was used). You could see that. I then looked inside of the reserve container and ALL the bridle was out (any more pulling on the bridle at that point would be pulling out a freebag). I can't tell if the PC would have reached the ceiling. In the example I witnessed the PC was flying horizontally, not vertically up (hence less fighting the gravity).

  5. I have seen them go to FULL bridle stretch (jumper standing, wearing the rig and pulling the silver). BTW, Quasar II has a cool feature helping the reserve PC launch. Basically, the reserve side flaps have the stiffeners in them that cause the to stay open. So, when you pull the reserve pin, the side flaps open by themselves in an instant, and the reserve PC does not have to push thru them. It actually takes a significant force to close the flaps down (basically, it's like a flower that blossoms in an instant). In general, that's like having an unobstructed launch of an external PC with the reserve PC that is actually packed inside. Maybe such a design would also help the recent "Mirage issue", since the container "wants" to open by itself...
  6. Yes, but in this case the "second or third tier schools" would have to put students on main and reserve parachutes that are both ROUND. What school would do it? BTW, do BSRs prohibit students from jumping round mains nowadays? I recall seeing such recommendations or regulations somewhere, but I am not sure...
  7. No shit... He was lucky thet the rear stabilazer was not as low as on some other planes... Few skydivers ended up dead or decapitated in similar events, plus the plane was crashed...
  8. Riggers only please - do you pack your OWN reserve? I am asking cause I know some riggers who do not like to take their own fate in their hands, and have their friend (rigger) pack their reserve. So, the case that I saw was that Rigger A packs Rigger's B reserve, and Rigger B packs Rigger's A reserve (they do not charge each other). It's not that they lack skills, but simply prefer "someone else" do it. Do you pack your own reserve, or do you feel uncomfortable packing your OWN reserve and have someone else do it???

  11. That means that both parachutes have to be round. Who would use them? And, can students jump round parachutes in the U.S. (both main and reserve)? Just curious.

  14. Bill Booth said that he thought about designing hand deployed reserve PC, but the AAD made that basically impossible. He also added that it is better for the reserve to be "remotely" operated in the sometime present "panic" mode.

  18. I thought exactly the same waw - WOW! I started this thread 19 months ago bacause I did not understand what would be a benefit of a reserve flap that does not tuck in like almost all others. I knew Bill had a reason for this "different" design. And there you have it!
  19. Good question. Another thing that came to my mind is that probably a long Spectra line flapping in a freefall wind (after pulling the reserve to full arm length) is more likely to tie a knot with some part of deploying reserve. I thing it would be less likely with the "less flexible" metal cable... Especially if you throw your handle(s) after pulling (soft reserve pud or a loop with a spectra cable would fly "up" since it is so lightweight).

  21. The skydivers were found 3 to 5 feet deep in the ice/snow (Maxim article). I also heard that one guy died because he suffocated, not from impact - is this true???
  22. They did have a supplemental oxygen, but chose not to use it (at least some of them). That was written in skydiving magazine shortly after the accident. There was no bailout oxygen. Only one had Cypres, not all had visual or audible altimeters...
  23. The template on the transparent window refers to the main pin cover, not reserve. Also, 100% of the main and reserve pin cover flaps area will be transparent (unlike on previous Sigmas, where only about 15% of reserve pin cover area was transparent). The RESERVE ripcord cable was a blue, slippery 1000lb, spectra line. Bill Booth said that it reduces friction and it will be introduced on Sigma first. After few years he may put it on V3.
