I totally agree. Velocity Sports builds an excellent product and they always provides great customer service. I'm on my 3rd Infinity. One of mine has around 1000 jumps and looks/functions like its new. They always reply quickly to email and phone calls. I purchased my last one used and the harness did not fit that great. Kelly rebuilt the harness, repaired a broken stiffener, new BOC pouch, new chest strap and a new set of stainless risers w/inserts - all that work for $200 including the return shipping. I had to ask twice if that was enough money, I was shocked. Great customer service, prices and a quality product will always keep me buying from Velocity Sports.

Good call PP, its starting to get warmer and we'll need to be putting the freefliers out first so we can be comfortable by the door and have plenty of room to get cameras ready. Winter - freefliers out last, where its warm. Summer - freefliers out first, near the cool air. I don't see any safety concerns as long as no one does anything stupid.

Sony PC Lens Size & Field of Vision Width
psw097 replied to skyjuggler's topic in Photography and Video
Sony prints the 35mm equivalent in the owners manual and on their website. PC105 is 50-500mm in camera mode - 42-420mm in memory (anti-shake is off). PC100, 110 is 48-480mm in camera mode. - probably others are the same I just had the service manuals for these handy. -
I just got another one this week from B&H for my tripod. They still appear to be in stock at various places.

420Ex has High Speed Synch up to max. shutter speed. Well, that was a redundant post. I must learn to type faster.

I used to develop B&W years ago and liked it. Now, I really enjoy playing with B&W in photoshop. Some cool stuff that can be done adding filters in post before converting to B&W. I read this a couple weeks ago and was interesting: http://194.100.88.243/petteri/pont/How_to/n_Digital_BW/n_Digital_BW/a_Digital_Black_and_White.html Don't know if its comparible to film, I don't know enough to answer that one.

I have not tried this but I think the 1/200 max shutter synch speed would be a problem. With a separate gun you can use high speed synch and building a mount for mine is on my long list of things to do - but I don't think the built in flash supports high-speed synch. Someone might correct me so stay tuned.

Nope - its marketing that tells you that because it's "eliptical" it turns faster and is more responsive. Your Stiletto is much more tapered than my FX - do you think it turns faster and is more responsive? What is the definition of responsive, aggressive, faster. The same stiletto to sabre comparison - which one is "faster?" The Sabre is trimmed steeper and will feel fast - does that make it more aggressive? It is marketing that tries to envoke an emotional response based on one or two parameters. Its engineering that defines the entire package.
-
I think yellow canopies are the most aggressive. Otherwise, all canopies at the same wingloading will fly about the same speed. Some will turn fast with toggles, some faster on front or rear risers, blah, blah, blah. Personal preference. The whole elliptical = agressive thing is nothing but marketing. We have to have something to differentiate products.

True, but I have bought a couple houses - isn't that adult? They help with the finances so I can spend it on stupid stuff. But, I'm sick of drywall - I hate drywall and contractors, they're always late, like skydivers.

A pre-nup can be an invaluable gift for the future.
-
I'll sell you mine, its a pain in the ass and I'm thinking about quiting this whole adult thing.

As long as you don't use the dreaded 12bit audio or want it to render it works fine.

The Sigma 12-24 is inner zoom and inner (FTM) focus - the length of the lens does not change during zooming. It is full time manual focus - the focus ring does not rotate or any part other part of the lens during focus. It is all internal. For the price of the 12-24 you can get a Sigma 15/2.8 FE and a Tokina 17/3.5 or Sigma 20/1.8 - so I don't know about extra bucks - but none are 12mm.

There was a lot of early poor reviews: bad preproduction samples, snap comclusions, etc. The current opinions have been mostly positive. A lot better than the Canon, Sigma and Tamron 14/2.8 rectilinears that are almost as wide as the 12-24 - those 3 lenses get horrible reviews and the test shots I saw with them suck (especially for $750 to $1000). If you like the fish-eye effect there are several out there, I have a 12mm FE that is silly wide. You can pick up a Zenitar 16mm FE - its $130 and samples look just as sharp its just manual, in freefall - who cares. I just don't like FE effect that much. I would have bought the Sigma 12-24 anyway - for hiking, it works amazing for framing a waterfall or an overlook.

Well, its not that simple. Applying brakes changes the shape of the airfoil and ultimately the angle of attack. That is the next variable in the equation - Cl (coefficient of lift). This is a multiplier based a airfoil shape and AOA. That number is also were the FM (fucking magic for those that might not know) part comes into play - you won't find that number published anywhere for a skydiving wing.
-
That is the combination I use currently - I got the Sigma 12-24EX in December and have only put 4 or 5 jumps on it. Its inner zoom and inner focus that helps for setup but helps make it a heavy beast but at least the 300D is not. The depth of field with that lens is strange and I'm still playing with the best focal setting, the calculated hyperfocal distance did not work so great - I keep it stopped down as much as possible, AV F8 or F9. Yes, 19mm to 38mm equiv. It matches my KUW-042M at ~13mm and my SGW-05PRO at ~18mm. From what I've seen the KUW-042 is actualy wider than the stumpy .3s - might be the camera difference but I just love conversion lens numbers they're so random. This guy did a detailed writeup on the lens: http://194.100.88.243/petteri/pont/Reviews/a_Sigma_12-24_f4.5-5.6/a_Sigma_EX_12-24_f4.5-5.6.html

Lift = Speed² - that's even better. At least in low speed flight: Lift = + ½ pV² * Cl * Surface area

Nothing quite as annoying as the built in flash strobe for AF assist on the 300D. That thing freaks me out and doesn't do that great a job. I got a 420EX, not as powerful as the 550EX and no manual controls but has a nice AF assist lamp. Just got a Tamron 28-75/2.8 from the green santa I'm hoping that will make a nice swooper combo.

I've done 2 release systems for my helmet. I like what you have done. The first one I did was a simple mod to the ratchet with a handle to make it easy to get to and add leverage. I replaced that with another a couple months ago that is somewhat similar to your's. I used a Shimano brake cable and put it through the pin and into the helmet. Some washers and a spring inside to keep the stack correct and keep it loaded. I thought about using a cotter key first but dismissed it - I felt the short throw left too much potential for premature release.

Thanks, that is what I thought - the reach is reduced since the zoom head might be in the wrong spot. Flash works fine - I bounce it most of the time anyway. It is good to know how the guide number is effected on a digital camera in case I'm trying to get some reach with it. Anyway I guess I'm asking too much for comsumer products. I would have thought the logic would be in the camera - thought that was the point of E-TTL. And, that the camera would report the correct effective focal distance to the flash-head.
-
I think it is the complex aerodynamic theory of FM.

Here is a good shot from my Digital Rebel of a Mr. Bill we did last fall. JMFreefly took the picture because I am the idiot thowing the PC. Jump worked until Mr. Bill stalled the canopy while trying to turn around on my shoulders and put me in line twist that had my hand trapped in the risers. We had the 2 inside video angles and chase canopy with video and stills. Well documented. Cannot be happier with the camera.

Along the same lines: Does anyone know if the flash head accounts for the digital crop factor? On my 420EX - it reports the lens setting as true - like 50mm on my Sigma 50/2.8EX. But with a crop camera that example would be 80mm, I would think the zoom head would need to go up to the next stop (75mm I think) for E-TTL to be correct. I don't know if it is an oversimplified user interface and it just knows what its doing or its all based on a film camera and Canon decided not to worry about the effect the smaller sensor has. A wider flash circle is not a bad thing but would mess up the range and power significantly. Since the 420EX is E-TTL only I don't get much choice, but its nice to know.

Sharpchuter 245 - now all 3 of my mains together barely equal that square footage.
