  1. Boogie might get upgraded to a Ruffwear Palisades sometime this year. It has built-in water bladders and looks more comfy. My puppy gets the hand-me-downs once he's calmed down some.
  2. The only thing better than a jetboil is making Boogie the dog carry is own stuff (and some of mine). GPS is up there too.
  3. It sucks - board mounted connectors, micro-fuses, etc. I've tried a couple times and made it worse at least once. If you can find the service manual (I don't have the PC120 manual) you can just replace the board but Sony charges almost as much as the flat rate so a lot of the boards. But that only works if the connector is the problem - one time I traced it past the connector to the interface and that was on a completely different board, I gave up there.
  4. Power regeneration from electric motor decel has been used in industrial applications for over a decade. Its a great way to save power during deceleration of servo motors and much more efficient than using resistors (or brake pads in cars) to dissipate energy. Much of the automation equipment used in modern automotive factories use power line regeneration to build your car - and using a lot more KW than all the Prius on the market. Now when they make a car that can handle a dozen 4x8 sheets of drywall between the wheel wells for a reasonable price I might bite. As it is my 4 mile rural commute to work doesn't justify another/different vehicle. Its just easier not to live where there is traffic.
  5. Was it a fisheye lens? A 180 degree fisheye lens is exactly that 180 degrees diag on a FF format - no matter the mm value. That ends up being about 20mm on a rectilinear lens - not 24mm. 180/1.6, or 112.5 degrees AOV formula - 2 x tan-1( l / (2 x f) )
  6. I have both a flatbed w/adapter and film/slide scanner - the flatbed is crap compared to the film scanner. I just finished scanning a roll of Velvia, looks great out of the film scanner and something like 13 megapixel. Personally, I think if I shoot raw with my DSLR its pretty close but using JPG quality - the film scanner is much better.
  7. I've used these lenses with the DR: - 12/5.6 FE, cannot remember what sort. - Sigma 12-24/4.5-5.6 - Heavy, expensive, not so good under F8 - Zenitar 16/2.8 FE - nice lens but the DR doesn't like stop down metering so much. - Kit lens - cheap, crappy build quality - Sigma 20/1.8 - very nice lens but heavy and 82mm filters - Tamron 17-35/2.8-4 - currently using this one. No complaints. I'm missing one I cannot remember.
  8. Ricky, I could have let you fly one of mine when you were still in Virginia - As long as I could film it. Landing a Raven is more like a semi-controlled collision with the earth. The short answer is that both my 120 and 135 opened excellent. Also, without question, both fly and land. The 135 landed acceptably at 1.55:1. But, the 120 came out of the sky like a brick and stalls at shoulder level. I consider it a great landing because the aircraft was reusable. Tips are - don't load them real high and/or pack for yourself so you don't need to deploy it.
  9. It didn't close and the camera was 1/2 in, 1/2 out - with nothing but a rubber band and gaff keeping it from a solo freefall. It shot video fine - I was testing it after doing a repair for someone.
  10. I put a PC110 in there for a bit - held it in with gaffers tape and rubberbands - it was scary and really didn't fit.
  11. There is a Sigma 300-800 for Nikon AF plus a 2x APO teleconverter would get 1600mm - That setup only runs around 5 grand.
  12. PC100 with Kenko .42Macro - it works well, good FOV with limited distortion - its just heavier than I'd like.
  13. I did similar with Ritz camera - I obviously got an unhappy one. Mine failed during a hike. I do change lenses a lot, often times next to a waterfall or some other water/dirt spewing thing. Its on its way to Mt. Fugi tomorrow. Olympus has a supersonic wave filter. It shakes the dust off. The E-1 needs a few key tweeks before I'd think about switching - I still like shooting film so my Canon mount lens would need to stay for my film body. The thought of 2 systems sucks. I'll probably wait for affordable full frame sensors from Canon, at least 1.3, they might wake up to the dust problem by the time that happens. Agreed on the bust rate. I like shooting raw and it really blows in raw. Its not the same as the Elan 7 that can burn up a roll before the plane leaves the frame, that's for sure.
  14. I had a shutter failure at 6800 frames on my 300D - I also purchased one of the first ones a week after it was released. When it came back from Canon the shutter looked differnet, I'd heard they had changed the design some and it was more reliable. I've had no trouble since - well, except for sensor dust that drives me insane. A couple grand in Canon mount lenses makes it hard to switch to Olympus to get rid of dust though. The busrts issue is not that bad, I can get upwards of 30 frames in freefall in JPG-large/fine.
  15. I cannot sew so I used pieces of sticky back velcro on all the camera condoms I've made.
  16. I've had good luck with the Sigma 70-200/2.8 and then add a tele-extender when needed.
  17. Isn't that a 19-35? If its the one I'm thinking about its not in the same class as the new DI series.
  18. Take the 35mm equivalent from the PC5 manual and multiply it times .42 - that will tell you what lens will match your video. Here, I'll help. The manual says 42mm * .42 = 17.64mm I use a Tamron 17-35/2.8-4. That way I can match any of my 3 wide angle converters with either my digital or analog still camera. The bonus is that its sharper, lighter, with better contrast that any of the primes I've owned. Its a lot more that 2 or 3 hundred though.
  19. Oooo, Charlottesville - I live there and I like massages even.
  20. As long as parts are not needed its an hour job. If parts are needed its better to send it to someone. Most parts cost more than the flat rate repair charge - they don't want to sell you parts so they jack the prices.
  21. I use this nifty machine: http://www.micro-solutions.com/roadstor/index.asp Works great at the DZ and while travelling - doubles as a DVD/MP3 player.
  22. I dunked my PC100 in sand once and it locked-up. I took it apart and cleaned it with compressed air, Q-tips and alcohol (for me and the camera). The error ended up being caused by a single grain of sand stuck between the capistan motor and position read head. Its worked ever since. Sony charges around $280, I think, but the PC100 is one of the easiest gizmos I've ever taken apart.
  23. Damn, its $480 for the 580EX. You can get a 420 and a 550 for that much.
  24. I slipped in the wet grass and dislocated my right shoulder on round one. So, I'll sum it up by saying - it sucked. I've been injured a couple times before and can say I earned each one, this time blew chunks. I spend the first day of 4-way dubbing video so I did get to watch almost every round before they were scored. I spend the second day with a sippy cup mixing vicadin, redbull and voldka.

    Deuce is amazing

And I'm grateful for the horse pill sized Motrin last week.
