  1. I shoot both digital and film and I don't see this when comparing my 300D shots to good print film. The digital is much more likely to blow out the highlights or loose the shadow detail. My dedicated film scanner is 3200x3200, around 13 MP. The 6.3 MP sensor in the 300D is close depending on what film I use but still doesn't have the detail or the latitude. It also doesn't shoot as fast and cannot do B&W or change between the several hundred specialized films out there. The convenience of the digital camera rocks and I really miss it (its getting repaired) for skydiving where I want instant gratification but the quality is still not as good as film. I like this comparison between slide, print and the 10D: http://194.100.88.243/petteri/pont/Pontification/m_Aesthetics_Shootout/_Is_slide_better.html
  2. The Photoshop Image Size dialog allows for most any resizing needs. I use Noise Ninja 2 to remove grain from both my digital camera (6MP SLR) and film grain/scanner noise (13MP film scanner). It does wonders for graininess with limited loss of sharpness. After batch processing with NN2 I use photoshop for cropping, USM, adjustments, etc.
  3. Hm, price fixing - you don't see that in print every day. Maybe unionize and call for a nationwide walkout until better pay and chiropractor visits are standard. Its worked for.....well, no one lately.
  4. The shutter curtain on my 300D self destructed after 6200 frames. Similar symtoms - hit the shutter release and only hear the mirror retract, no shutter sound, no picture and an err99 after a bit. Check that there is no crud on the mirror or shutter curtain and that the mirror retracts - blower is the only thing I would use inside to clean it out - use the cleaning mode without a lens to check the movement. I kept mine going for a month after the first problem by going into cleaning mode after each error. I don't recommend that because once it went for good Canon refused the warranty.
  5. They have one in most any autoparts store - fiberglass repair kit, some assembly required.
  6. I have an RX600. Its a great printer - using the correct paper photo prints are excellent and border free to 8.5x11. The R800 is going to be a better printer but I wanted the convience of the all-in-one with limited desk space.
  7. Humidity problems - That's for sure. Bobby and I went through 3 PC100s and I was getting ready to mount a TRV on my still plate if the last one shut down. I just went back to film after the shutter on my digital rebel self destructed. Canon wanted $300 to fix it. That money went to an EOS 30 instead - 4 fps, no buffer, eye control, bright viewfinder and wide angle is really wide. I'll probably go back to digital but not until another generation or two.
  8. I picked up a Zenitar 16mm/2.8 fish a month or so ago also. Great lens for $130. Its a lot cheaper and smaller than my Sigma 12-24. All manual - infinity is at 1.2 meters autofocus would not be very useful. Stop down metering is hard to get used to.
  9. That's much of the fun. I posted 5 shots of one we did awhile ago including Chris standing on my shoulders before the canopy stalled and everything went to crap. We had 3 camera angles to make sure we got it. Mr Bill thread
  10. Most of the Err99 I have heard about were from older Sigma lenses. Sigma can rechip some of them. I've never had an error of any sort in 5000 frames but I don't have any older lenses. I leave the auto-off at 8 minutes, the default is way to short.
  11. Actually, that rig has had everything from a 245 Sharpchuter to a 129 Safire in it when i owned it.
  12. I didn't forget and there was a favorable girl/guy ratio - I just always want more, more, more...more.
  13. I took your pictures a couple weeks ago and didn't get any sort of pose let alone flashed. All I got was tunnel flying and drunkard pictures, I was jipped.
  14. I'm saying no such thing, I was quoting the manufacturer of the fiber. A question was brought up about UV resistance and I consider the manufacturer a SME and the main source of accurate information. Looking up Vectran's UV resistance - it becomes stable after loosing 30% of its strength in 450 hours. Spectra appears to have minimal deterioration because of UV radiation. Its up to you which specs are important. Design work has trade-offs, its the golden rule of engineering: better, faster, cheaper - pick only 2.
  15. This is a fine quote on UV resistance: "(1) Resistance to light High tenacity fiber has generally low light resistance. The strength of Technora can be lowered to a half when exposed to sunlight for about 3 months. For applications directly exposed to sunlight, the surface of the fiber is recommended to be covered by some other materials."
  16. The Sony DRU-500 series burns both + and - formats. I'm not sure what they are up to but I have an original DRU-500a and it works great, no real complaints. +R and -R are competing formats - both have advantages. I normally use +R for my own use because I know my players support it and -R for other people since there is a better chance of the -R to work with an older DVD player. Most newer player will read most anything.
  17. It's certainly on the expensive side for milled aluminum - at least if it's coming off a CNC, if some dude is turning dials on a Bridgeport that's a little different. Wow, and $42 for a extra mounting plates - Strobo is like $14. I don't see any sort of anti-twist plate for it either. The strobo anti-twist plate makes setup easy and keeps everything from moving. Oh well, got enough Strobo parts to keep me for awhile.
  18. I'm having the same problem. It used to work but its been a bit since I've added any contacts.
  19. Me too, but unless it excels at the golden rule of engineering: better, faster, cheaper - pick 2, making it significantly better than anything else out there I don't really care. They can call it a 48 line canopy, doesn't mean I'm going to shell out any money.
  20. I'm having trouble seeing the top skin in your pictures. They don't look like any fancy quicktime VR that we can pan around to the top skin.
  21. My main camera helmet has one my FF helmet does not. My FF helmet is very minimal. I have not had any problems with it. The video whores I FF with make sure its in record for fear of not getting to see themselves on TV. I have had problems using a cam-eye - like spontaneosly turning off the camera and no light. The strain relief is not very good on the cabling and I've had solder joints break. Additional soldering's been required. Everything is internally mounted so its a pain to get to. I never use the button - I have the switch covered with fiberglass so it doesn't get pushed by mistake. I do like the lights at least when I'm getting paid so I don't get paranoid.
  22. Alpha 94 and Viper 105. The Alpha can be unhappy sometimes - I don't jump that with my still camera very often. Viper/Alpha opening get better and better as the control lines shrink. My old Viper opening are amazing now with 600 or so jumps on the lines. The Alpha keeps getting better with 200 now. The control lines are around 10 inches shorter than spec on the Viper.
  23. The lens assembly should come out as a unit. You cannot really take it apart much but once its out some canned air might work any crap loose. I've had some dust on the inside lens element that this has worked for. It doesn't help if you have hot pixel locations - that just a fried CCD. The attached lens assembly diagram from the PC100 and gives the gist of it.
  24. The camera embeds a JPG file when you shoot RAW. You can extract the embedded file with the Canon software. The 300D does not give you an option as to what size file it is - its always Medium/fine. The custom functions left over from the 10D firmware they made the 300D firmware from allows you to select any other size. The smaller size you pick the less space the RAW file takes on the CF card and the more shots you get. Since I use C1 for my RAW file conversion tool the embedded file is useless to me so being able to pick Small/reg saves me a Meg per shot - like 10 more shots for a 512MB CF card. 10 shots come in handy when hiking for an afternoon. The Russian firmware hack just turns on the custom functions menu that was already there. The 10D user manual can tell you the specifics. I didn't mention: If you don't shoot RAW its pointless and the camera is not really fast enough to shoot RAW for skydiving.
  25. Just put in the newest Russian firmware hack. It unlocked the 10D custom functions and serveral appear to work fine. The 3 biggest for me are FEC, selectable RAW + JPG and no shutter realease without CF card. FEC - I have a 420EX flash without manual control adding FEC is very cool I shoot a lot of RAW when not jumping and that saves a load of CF card space to select RAW + small. Some of the other functions work, but those 3 are all I cared about. The camera is running stable, the only worry I can see is if it crashed for some other reason and wouldn't boot far enough to flash the Canon software back in. They may not want to fix it at that point.
