Ramble away, it helps. And it is one of the toughest things I've EVER dealt with. To watch and feel so helpless. To arrive at the scene and know there is nothing you can do to help. To relive the image in your minds eye. Time helps, and I find sharing good stories with your friends helps too. On the other note, I have always know I can do EVERYTHING right and still get bit. It's the other half of that "Blue Skies" coin...... Take care of yourself friend.... ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Harry, many thanks for the jumps we shared, I'm looking at a photo of me hanging with one hand on your harness and one on the young lady celebrating her one hundredth jump. We lost the other half of the hybrid early on but kept our part together and mugged for the camera. And many thanks for the advice through out my flight training, you were not my instructor but you shared tips and information freely. I'm a pilot now and I owe some of that to you. I had hoped one day to share thoughts on instructing but I'm still a ways off from being a CFI. To those that may not have known Harry, read his thoughts here on this website. He's a smart guy, who knew how to have fun, yet keep it safe. Blue Skies Harry. -jp-

Er.....it's SUPPOSED to go straight to overhaul. A fact a couple operators will chose to ignore. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

A rolling start is one where by the pilot rolls onto the runway, and rather than stop, apply power, and then release the brakes, they simply continue the smooth roll on to the runway into the take off. Not a bad technique in it's self, but when combined with a mid field start (i.e. rolling on to the runway at mid field) can reduce the pilot's options should the take off not go as planned. There is an old saying among old pilots: "Nothing more useless than runway behind you and altitude above you." Without going into to much detail as to why they do this, a constant speed or variable pitch propeller (as found on Twin Otters) can have the blades positioned anywhere from flat to the wind to knife edge into the wind. When a pilot has to shut down an engine, or looses one to failure, it is prudent to "feather" or place the blade into the knife edge into the wind position to reduce drag. If this is done on a good engine, the thrust produced will drop to nearly zero. The wingtip vortices and downwash from a wing in flight produce something called induced drag. When an airplane is flying within one wingspans height over the ground the ground itself interrupts the vortices and downwash thus reducing, or eliminating the induced drag experienced by the airframe and wing. When the aircraft climbs higher than the length of its wingspan it encounters the effects of induced drag again. If it has insufficent lift (from lifting off at to slow of an airspeed for example) it may not be able to climb or even remain in flight once outside of ground effect. Some good reading for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_effect_in_aircraft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingtip_vortices http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant_speed_propeller ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. You know, one might assume otherwise, but I just don't get any.

I was gonna say I'll be part of your fan club, but I don't have any hate mail to send, so I'll just go on my way now.... ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Decision: Selling OR retiring an old reserve. (Raven Micro 150)
diablopilot replied to mdrejhon's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's your call as to what you can live with, but I'd jump that MR150 any day of the week. I have 3 rides on one and they were just fine. Before gear, I weigh 185. Give ya $50 if no one else takes it. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Fuck. 10 years down the tubes just like that, huh? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Josh, you're welcome to whatever opinion you like. Since you haven't been around for the better part of a year it won't hold much value to me. I admit I made a mistake going to bat for you to get your job back, only to have you get yourself fired a second time. Have a great day. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Thanks for the pep talk! Made me smile. The grass is always greener, but I'll just look at now as a new challenge to me, and simply put in the effort to get where I want to go. Good luck to you sir, and bluest of skies.

I've got enough of those. It's kinda like collecting matchbox cars… having the cool looking ones is fun, but you'd rather have a full sized one you can actually drive. You mean like this one? Billy. Eh, I'll be hanging on to mine pretty tight for the time being. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

My expectations are to be treated with respect, and have fun! I don't care if we eat at Taco Bell. Bingo. Anyone who's keeping track of the cost isn't someone I want to hang out with. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

I am overjoyed to hear that. I would run my own program the same way. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Agreed -- look how long it took to get changes to Part 105. What might really help is if these recommendations become known in the skydiving community, and skydivers vote with their $ to jump at places that seem to be taking the right steps, and avoid the places that don't. I think we'll see an increase in Ramp Checks for a time. Hopefully that will have the intended effect of motivating the slack ass operators to clean up their acts, yet not harass the operators doing it right. I think that the most likely major change (and it's not all that likely) is that the FAA will implement a "Jump pilot signoff" like there is for tow pilots, or banner pilots. Not a bad idea for the USPA to begin to plan an answer to this, so if the FAA does come knocking, we have a plan ready, rather than let them figure out the requirements. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. I don't know, I've always been too busy looking at it to bother holding it up to my ear. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
