Unfortunately this is the best photo. I’ll find some Broad-winged hawk photos and some of the other suggestions on line to see if I can match them up.

[reply I dunno - but it looks like it would taste just like a spotted owl. I staked a turtle out there to see if it will come back.

Is anyone good at identifying birds? I have seen a bird of prey around my neighborhood for the last few years but don’t know what it is. I occasionally see Red Tailed Hawks around here but not in my neighborhood. I live a block and a half from the center of a town with a population of about 16 thousand in an area of about 3 square miles in southeastern PA. This bird is smaller than that. I have seen it (or another one) chasing and catching smaller birds. Today as I walked past the window and glanced out I saw it sitting in my neighbor’s yard on the ground. It didn’t move for a minute and I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I thought it was a piece of dirty, shoveled snow. Once it finally moved I realized it was sitting on a squirrel. I took a few pictures from my window but when someone walking on the sidewalk passed within a few feet of the bird I decided to go outside and see if I couldn’t get a closer shot. While all of this was going on a second squirrel was obviously very agitated and walking around the bird while staying in the safety of the bushes a few feet away. I managed to get about 25 feet away and snapped this photo. If you don’t want to see a dead squirrel (nothing gory) don’t click the attachment. So does anyone now what it may be?

Logical, scientific explanation...or paranormal ?

[reply I'll try turning it off in the back tonight. My husband said it was probably something like that. But you know us females...there's got to be more to it then a logical explanation ! I'll tell him, he was right...AGAIN ! Thanks ! You do realize that those helping you come to a logical solution to your mystery are just a part of the conspiracy don’t you? -
Wow, thanks for posting that.

You are doing the right thing. YOU are the only one who will look out for you. Educate yourself about everything you can, the information is out there. Read, learn and ask questions. If what the doctor tells you doesn’t jive with what you have learned ask him to explain to you why it doesn’t then get another opinion. No one is advocating for you but you.

I used to delight in antagonizing a co-worker who hated mushrooms, by eating them in front of him at lunch. And the really weird part was that he was a vegetarian. cooked mushrooms have the texture, look, and taste of over-heated pencil eraser. i think they are self -recycled practical joke that the French are playing on us all. "wadch ze seely peoples eat zis crap." You’ve tasted “over-heated pencil eraser”?

I don't get that. Why? what isn't functioning correctly in your psyche? Do you think it's a character flaw or something admirable or even impressive? Worse yet, some people find this attitude to be macho rather than, frankly, sad and pathetic. And it ends up being some kind of posturing. Everyone (mature adults without seriously mental health issues) has a choice to control themselves. You CHOOSE to stop. I don't believe someone "can't" stop - it's a "won't" thing. and an crappy excuse to cross that line. It's a seriously question. I've never heard a good reason for someone even thinking that about themselves. Of course you are correct. “Couldn’t do it” is probably too strong. I guess I am just trying not to put myself above those committing these acts when I haven’t been in their shoes. Of course you should “CHOOSE to stop”. But when I see these kinds of video I try to give the benefit of the doubt. What makes a seemingly rational person lose control, the vestigial remains of early man? You see it in police pursuits too. Is the adrenalin flowing so much it overpowers rational thought? My point is that it is wrong and obviously those that don’t “CHOSE to stop” shouldn’t be wearing a badge. If I thought it was “something admirable or even impressive”, I wouldn’t have started out by saying “you have to stop”.

When someone submits (flat on the ground, hands behind the head) you have to stop. Secure him, detain him but don’t beat him. I’ll be the first to admit I couldn’t do it. If I was all jacked up chasing someone I wouldn’t be able to turn it off but that (among many, many other reasons) is why I’m not a cop.

I think Shah thought Nigel was talking about lurking dz.com as apposed to lurking at an actual dz. You can definitely get in a pissing match here. Hey Shah, you could also check out some of the other drop zones near you this winter just to say hello, fill out your waivers and make some new contacts if it is too cold to jump. That way when the weather breaks you can hit the ground running. I see you have Skydive Sussex as your home dz. Sky's the Limit is less than an hour and a half from there and depending on where you call home may be closer to you. Good people there. You could also take a run up to the Ranch or down to Cross Keys. Make it a goal to visit more drop zones this year and by visiting them now you help alleviate any anxiety you may have of walking in to a drop zone as an unknown. When you are going to visit let people here know and maybe they can meet you and introduce you around. Edited for spelling. Probably missed many others.
